Hey people, I'm going to explain this simply and put it in fat red letters so you can get it through your skull: It's a religion. It's not Christianity, is your post has anything to do with "burning in hell", "false prophet" ect. Please stay out.

Due to pressure, I'm lifting the moratorium on discussion topics. But I will still be monitoring the thread for flaming.

I have a question about Islam. I have conflicting perception about Islam and kinda afraid to ask a muslim in person getting offended [since the only thing i heard about them in tv and here in the Philippines are they are violent people].

1. Do muslims think that the Christian God and Allah are the same? That the difference is the humanity/deity of Jesus Christ?
2. Is it true that you guys descended from Ishmael, the son of Hagar, the second wife of Abram?
3. Where does this suicide bomber coming from [since they insist its out of religion they are doing it] when they say, " if they kill Christians they go to paradise?"
4, i heard that jihad is not about physical violence but spiritual war, i mean, keeping the faith against all odds, is that true?
5. what is your point of salvation? i mean, us Christians' definition of salvation is through faith in Jesus Christ.

that's it for now

1. Yes.
We don't believe Jesus is God,however. We believe he was a mortal, a prophet, who never actually died.
2.Islam was propagated in it's present form during the lifetime of Muhammad which is from 571-633 AD (not exactly sure about the dates)
3.No, those people are brainwashed by Radicals and extremists who violate the sanctity of human life. They deserve hell.
4.Yes. The Prophet said that "The ink of the scholar is holier than the blood of the martyr. "
5. Following the islamic lifestyle, living according to the 5 pillars of Islam (Accepting that there is only one God, Praying 5 times a day,Charity,Fasting during Ramadan, making the pilgrimage to Hajj when financially & physically able)
If you have any more queries, please ask me or PM me.
Peace.

i think i'll ask here so everyone will at least learn something. I believe a lot lived in stereotypes and misconceptions about Islam [even in Christianity].

btw, what country are you from? I'm from Philippines. I am a Christian but lived and has some beliefs of a Tausug [which is a muslim ethnic group before Christianity came here]

i just said that coz i'm curious if all muslim groups believed in the purity of women. To make it clear, i'll post the following question below.

1. America, UK and Australia are kinda known for their liberated women. I mean, they practice pre-marital sex and its okay to their society. just curious if they are muslim in their respective country, are there women different? to be exact, value virginity?

2. There is a muslim [Tausug to be exact] culture here that at the first night of honeymoon, a white cloth was placed on the bed so if the girl will be virgin, blood spots will be seen. Then on the next day, the groom will go out of the room with the cloth where he is awaited by all the men in his family. If there is blood, the groom waves it and all the men will shout in joy. if they have some gun, they shoot like crazy. But if the girl is not a virgin, the father will enter the room and kill the woman believing its a family's disgrace. Do muslims in UAE or all around the world practice this? I heard in Jordan, they do this.

I'm Indian, but actually moved back to India last week after 19 years in the UAE.
1. Men as well as women are expected to be chaste. However Muslims are encouraged to marry widows or the destitute as well.
2. That concept was adopted by hardcore extremists. It's an alien concept in the UAE and the Gulf countries, though poorer nations in the Middle East may encourage this practice. It's not practiced in my, or any of the families I know.

Every ideology and religion will have it's extremists (Atheists, Christians, Muslims...) You can't base a whole religion or ideology based on the beliefs of a minority of people who will proclaim that they adhere to that ideology or religion. We should respect each others beliefs (that doesn't mean we have to agree with them, but we should acknowledge them) But that also means we shouldn't censor people who post things that we don't agree with. I have one question about Islam.
1. Who do Muslims believe goes to hell? And is hell eternal in Islam? Is there torture in hell by demons or deities? Or is it simply a place of suffering and separation from god?

1. That is God's will & out of our hands. We just try to live according to all the basic tenets of the faith and if we aare sincere or our character is good, we gain entry to Heaven.
Hell is eternal.
Angels.
Yes.

i hate how the arab terists say there doing it in the name of god i mean fuck of what ever religon it is they dont ask you to kill people an less u worship the devil

Well it isnt Islam guiding them because no where in our Quran it tells us to just go around suiciding it is a very bad deed to do that in our religion and the punishment is hell. People kill each other around the world even christians kill other christians it doesnt mean they worship the devil it is their character that is screwed up. There is a cause and effect for everything and there is pieces of history never taught or just simply kept quiet about that keeps people from knowing the real reason why the middle east is in such a bad shape as it is now. In Islam a muslim should never be the first to attack we are always taught to attack only in defense. O yeah I dont believe hell is eternal in Islam.

My question for our local Muslim expert (thanks for being a reliable resource, btw), is what do you need to do to get into heaven? I realize it will probably vary depending on the sect (though I can't imagine Islam being as messed up as Christianity when it comes to having so many different denominations), but I'm curious. Most Christians believe Christ's atonement did a lot for them and they don't need to do much, which i think is bullshit. What do Muslims need to do to get into heaven, and what happens to non-Muslims?

Muslims follow the tenets of their religion, in the hopes of gaining entry to Paradise, though it has not been guaranteed to anybody, save a few people(less than 10 I believe) whom the Prophet mentioned. The rest of us just try to live cleanly and according to the faith in the hope that we enter Heaven, though it is far from a sure thing. It is said that a Jewish prostitute who took pity on a dying dog on the roadside, and filled her shoes with water to save it's life was granted Paradise and another, who lived in devotion to Islam, but tortured a small cat to death was condemned to hell. The difference between Paradise and Hell in this case, was not the religion of the women, but the strength of their character.

On another note, suicide is the most grievous sin in Islam and murder is second, therefore suicide bombing is a cross between taking the life God has granted and taking away innocent people's lives, making it a ruinous sin.

Thanks for coming to this thread = ) It's nice to have someone educated on the subject.

Just a couple questions,

1 - can you explain the differences between the major sects of Islam?

2 - About the Hajj Pilgrimage. I had a teacher whose friends were pooling their money so one family could go and "represent" the entire group. Is this normally an acceptable practice?

I have another question that I have never gotten a strait answer from a Muslim when asking it. What does the Koran say about marriage and divorce? Someone once told me that a man can have over 4 wives or something like that, and that all he has to do to divorce her is say that he does. What does the Koran say?
