God in the christian sense is, I believe, an ironic bastard. He - if one can assign a gender to God - created Man and gave Man free will. Yet he then goes on to make it so that if you believe in him and worship him, even if you are the most vicious killer, if you say "sorry", you will go to Heaven, but if you don't, no matter how saintly you are, you'll go to Hell. Period.

However, if you believe in God in a different sense, then you could go the way Kant chose, perhaps. "The idea of a God (not necessarily a benign, or even sentient being) is necessary for Reason".
