Don't bash me.

I don't watch them because I really really don't like the flying kick thing, the throwing of the knife, and the "power" thing that I only see in animes like dragon ball..

because most people don't understand their culture bec. they keep on playing dramas on their old times....they should make modern ones....

i think cause the culture and the common of their people displayed in their shows are not like familiar to us.
not being offensive.

but i mean like, for example
their shows are very realistic, so realistic that it gets boring to us.

like shows from japan, the plot and theme is always new and refreshing, with good ost to back up
from kdrama , theres a lot of emotions being emphasis, like either super happy or super sad and the scenes display them
it helps viewers to get into the emoion of the drama, and sucessfully has the viewers fixated on their screen.
i mean, it gets boring if you have no surprise, since events in the show are happening to you real life everyday.

i really love mainland dramas =D i was always watchign mainland dramas since i was 6 years old ^^ atm i just love japanese dramas xD but if the drama is chinese, then i want to watch mainland drama ^^

I think its just because like said, that there isn't a lot of people who is subbing mainland tv, so there aren't a lot of fans <.< and sure they doesn't often use a lot of idols .....
but that doesn't mean it isn't great ;____;

i would like to sub some mainland dramas ^^ but im not sure if anyone is intrested in it ~
my current favs are

[1] Xi you ji - journey to the west CCTV version 1986
Yeah its old xD but its much better then the version from nowadays -.-''''

[2] Zhong an liu zu - the 6th group of fatal case
i love criminal storys <33 the main characters/actors are so great *__* *especialy loving wang qian as ji jie* and the story never becoming boring, because each case is solved in 1-3 episodes ^^ and for the whole season their is about one "huge case" to be solved for the whole season.

[3] Xing fu de yan le - tears of happiness
Its a new drama of this year i love it its the chinese version of the japanese 1 litre of tears ^^ I think this drama is really great, and you can't really compare it to the japanese version, because it changed a lot ~
its a complete new story, just the illness is the same, i think ^^ and the ending is also different ^^

these are my current favs ._. i wonder if anyone would want to watch this (with subs?) ^^

I watch some of them, it depends on what.
I especially love 'Princess Pearls', even though that's so old it's still one of my favorites <3

It's like you said...there aren't many fans because they don't recognize the actors/actresses or aren't familiar with the common themes...like wuxia. Wuxia isn't the only type of mainland drama...although it is one of the more popular. Personally i recently really enjoyed some mainland dramas set in the 1920s before japanese invasion...but those dramas tend to be very sad and politically-involved.

You would either have to have a really good understanding of chinese phrases and military/historical terms or you would have to have to have a subbing team that is willing to stick it out for 30+ episodes. It takes a lot of effort to fully appreciate a mainland series sometimes..even the series that I love very much I don't understand around 60% of because there are no english subs and my mandarin is only sub-par, enough just for me to understand the basic plot of the drama and not be able to understand their poetic language (which they seem to use a lot of). even then, mainland chinese dramas tend to be very serious and very tragic ..even the "comedy" genre ones tend to have a few deaths here and there and a bunch of misunderstandings and all that other dramatic stuff. And furthermore, I've discovered that if there is ever a happy ending, it will be bittersweet. Some people are just unwilling to stick it out for so many episodes just to receive a bittersweet ending that isn't easy to stomach as a happy ending would be. Though I really do think that these bittersweet endings leave a longer lasting impression on a person...I feel relieved at happy endings but I don't ponder the drama as much as I would if it were a sad ending, so I guess the directors have done their job in captivating the audience.

That being said..I really think mainland dramas are quite "mature" and have a more old fashioned type of romance (which is based on both chinese philosophy and tendency to have settings before the modern era)..there isn't as much joking around and most of it is all romance, no comedy. Sometimes after watching a bunch of Korean romcoms and becoming bored with the comedy, I'll go over to a good mainland drama and it always has me admiring the main leads, despite their type of romance being very different from what is common today...sometimes even shedding a few tears from the melodrama helps me relieve stress or learn about human morals, helping me perceive different valued virtues in historical times..all of which i think are dry topics in a lot of popular idol dramas nowadays. Don't get me wrong...idol dramas are fun but I forget the majority of them after watching them, while some mainland dramas that I have watched in the past will remain in my memory for a long long time

there's a drama that I would especially recommend called "too late to say I love you", it's very touching if anyone is up for some melodrama that doesn't end too badly.

Agreed.

It's hard to take mainland/wuxia dramas seriously. They go way over the top with the special effects and it looks like shit 90% of the time.

I love wu xia dramas :)
I learned Chinese from them! hehe
I think not a lot of people watch them because they don't give it a chance.
A lot of wu xia dramas actually have better actors than those idol dramas.
In my opinion, a lot of idol dramas have terrible acting.
Though some wu xia dramas with idol actors are horrible too :)
I just wish they stop hiring only pretty actors, and start hiring people that can actually act.

[edit] that's not to say that there are idol dramas with good actors :3
I think "you're beautiful" (korean ver) has great actors
