I grew up hanging out with a fairly blue collar, druggie midwestern punk crowd. I'm old enough that I can remember punk before thrash. Also, I can remember baud rates and bootlegged copies of Akira :D.

What's happening lately in metal is mostly hype and bullshit. Thrash is bullshit. It's fake emphasis for when guys want to sound all TOUGH and EXTREME but they don't have any talent or good ideas. Cookie Monster vocals are fake-ass poser bullshit. The whole schtick with being all tough and metal but suddenly singing three part harmonies like a barbershop quartet was invented by Bad Religion; a less-than-talented "hardcore" band about as interesting as watching golf on tv. The trifecta of suck would be cookie monster vocals, thrash, and sweet three-part harmony choruses. I'm googling right now for that particular perfectly bad song.

As far as I can tell, things that are happening right now in metal that don't suck are Kvellertak and the Sword. I feel bad for Al Jourgensen, the stuff he's made in the past few years has been inconsistent, but pretty much brilliant and nobody's noticed.

On the more punk side of things, there's Turbonegro and the Hellacopters, and then there's everybody else.

The classics are Raw Power/Iggy Pop, the first six Black Sabbath Albums, the Tom Warrior's Greatest Hits album and Motorhead. Everything else is just footnotes.

Are you stuck in the mid 80's or something?
Thrash Metal and harsh vocals has been around for ages already.
Besides, even if it's not the most technical, at least thrash riffing requires SOME competence at playing the guitar.

If you wanna hear some REALLY talentless stuff, just look at what evolved from the Hardcore genre.

And really, even if Bad Religion sucked, it doesn't mean nobody else can make the harsh/soft formula sound decent.
Sure, the band I posted a link to above is not on of those, but still...

Rammstein. Mother fo's.
If you're into the really, gorey stuff, and screamo, then, may I suggest Cannibal Corpse. I personally dislike screamo. I know a few bands that actually put real emotion into their songs other than yelling and grunting.

I'll do what every metal elitist does and say it now, 'cause it's never said enough:

the majority of the bands posted on this thread are not metal bands.

Also: screamo IS a genre, and a damn good genre. People have been flinging that word around for a long time, though, usually people who don't know the genre in/of metal except "heavy metal, and then there's screamo", stupid elitists who have not actually even listened to real screamo, and the hardcore/metalcore crowd who happily took the word and fucking ruined the name of that genre SO freaking bad that screamo's real bands are now under "skramz". This includes: Envy, 1000 Travels of Jawaharlal (both of these Japanese), La Quiete and Raein (both Italian), amongst others. Those four SCREAMO/skramz bands are amazing bands, and definitely don't deserve wearing the shit label of screamo now.

That being said, I'm a proggy melodic death-metal head. BTBAM (saw them in the Summer Slaughter tour. BEST. FUCKING SHIT. EVER.), Blotted Science, Animals as Leaders (will be going to see them in September!), Cynic, and Death's later years, Amon Amarth, Symbolik, Conducting from the Grave, The Faceless, and Be'lakor are all some of my favorite bands.
