i don't know how tings work over at your side but in Singapore, we all follows our dad's race, hence for example, although my mom is a malay of chinese mix, and my dad is a Javanese, thus my race is Javanese and not called a javamalaynese etc XD ^^ gd luck finding urs!

Sorry BK but that list is flawed beyond belief and useless for the purposes of this website. Therefore adding more to it does not really fix it much. You can keep adding but people are going to be confused/overwhelmed with so many choices. Not only that, it is too long of a list to be considered a feature. You know clearly that the list is nothing more than a mere copy and paste job from wikipedia. Which leads me to another point. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia which means the list in this case is vague because in its attempt to be a reference for pretty much any point of view ethnicity is looked upon it extends to the point where even 'language groups' are included.


I pointed out to shinji back when he had just added that list that there were a couple of language groups (Proto-Indo-European) for example) wrongly listed as ethnic groups, not only that but even extinct ethnic groups are included, not to mention nomadic groups! I doubt a nomadic tribe has access to the web let alone enjoys watching anime.

Also, the list generalizes too much. People tend to confuse ethnicity and nationality sometimes and having such list in a site where most users are not old enough to learn the differences between race, nation, ethnicity and other related social terms is not right in my opinion.

Here are some examples, try to look on that list for 'American', does it come up? no, instead several results are listed. Irish American, latin american, african american, etc.

Why is that? because American is a nationality.

Now look for Colombian, only one result. As if all of a sudden the rules and differences between ethnicity and nationality are different for other countries....hmm would that be because the list has been edited by a bunch of people in a medium (the internet) which is mainly composed of a high volume of American users? Colombian is not an ethnicity, is a nationality.

Besides vagueness there is also a problem of utility. This is a list that has to consider anthropological, and archeological views for example. Meaning that really rare, small, nomadic and even ancient groups are on that list.

Back to the utility issue. This site has that feature in order to be useful. To do that it has to be simple and more concise. THEN you can start adding things if a petition is made.

Look at what this page does, they first divide things in nationality and then ethnic origin listing the predominant and modern groups.

That's a list that is logical and makes sense, it is simple and to the point.


A 1000 items list is just too long and vague to be useful. Please reconsider changing this 'feature' I'm not saying the link I gave is perfect either but it is more logical.

I know you like things to be right BK and since you have a bit more 'power' on the site now I suggest you consider adding a nationality box and then an ethic group box.


There is a reason why FlavorAmazing and Ice_Blue_Eyes said what they said. A huge part of that reason are the flaws of that list.

I think we should be able to do that, too.

There are people with many different ethnicities, afterall, and there is really no limit to the possible combinations. Plus some people may want to write their ethnicity as a more specific group, like cultural tribes, islands within a country, etc.

Like, I like to refer to myself as Okinawan, rather than Japanese... but even if you added that, I am also half Chinese-American...

That is s group of people that I am pretty sure do not exist anymore since we are talking about 5-9th century.

I dont understand why people complicate things. Look, realistically speaking a great majority of us share numerous connections with different groups but to say your ethnicity has so many associations is unrealistic.

I could say I am part Spanish because Spaniards conquered south America and mixed with the natives. And I can say I'm Iberian too, and that I am part Amerindian and I could go on and on..
Or I could just be practical and realistic and say I am Latino.

Pick whoever group or groups you feel identified the most, but don't go over 2 because that's unpractical and very often, way too categorical.
