Backstabbing? Wouldn't that imply that it wasn't gonna come out on PS3? It's coming out on both consoles, so I don't see why it could be considered 'backstabbing'.

I think you got it wrong because it implies that Sony was counting on FF franchise to be one of it's main selling point but was it turn betrayed, so to speak, by SquareSoft when they revealed that FF is coming to XBox 360 as well.

True, I guess I gave everyone that impression.
But what I was referring to was the practice that Final Fantasy core games always came exclusively on Sony's prodigy console, in this case Play Station.

Isn't it always?
Although this move really was surprising, more so because I will be left in absolute awe if XBox can pull off visual stunts equal to PS3 which is oh so praised because of it's phenomenal hardware.

Sony should be thankful Square didn't do them like they did Nintendo.

They still have Final Fantasy though, it will still sell a crapload of PS3's (especially since Japan isn't getting a 360 version) and they still have Vs XIII (whatever that is). Sorry, I don't entierly get why this is 'backstabbing'

You contradicted yourself there. You admit that Square pulled the same thing on Nintendo, yet you say that the core FF games always came exclusively on Playstations - Not only where the first 6 on Nintendo consoles, but 7, 8 and 11 where also avaliable on PC (which is also happening to FF13 btw)

They wouldn't have done it if it wasn't possible. Anyway, any RPG that relies on its graphics for success is not good news in my book - an RPG shouldn't need great graphics to be an amazing game. Just look at Persona 3: Decent graphics, backed up by anime cutscenes but is made great by its gameplay, sound and storyline. If Atlus can do that on a PS2 then Square-enix should be able to pull it off on a 360.

EDIT

Actually, FF 1 - 6 where first released on Nintendo consoles before Square 'abandoned' Nintendo in favor of Sony. You are right about FF:CC though, that was crap

I sometimes get the feeling that there are a lot of Final Fantasy fans out there who don't know about the first 6 most of them don't stand up too well today, but FFVI is one of the greatest RPG's ever in my book, and I think it needs more praise.

Agreed, especially about Atlus games since they're always awesome, but I think Square has become an interesting company lately - 1st they're almost afraid to think out of the box (think Persona and it's "monster diplomacy") then counters this with innovative approach to combat in 12. installment , 2nd they don't really stray away from the "love plot governs all" approach in modern titles and then change that in FF12 as well taking a political approach to things and making countries steal character's spotlight when it comes to story.

But my worry has been, until FF 12, that Square has made it a habit to make generic jRPGs situated in unique settings. I can only imagine what they hope to achieve in 13 trilogy.

btw. FF 13 coming to PC?

lol, don't injure yourself too much, you wont even be able to play the games!

And yeah, they mentioned it in Microsofts E3 conference. Street Fighter IV is also coming to PC, so I think its becoming a bit of a trend in Japan now.

I didn't like the combat in 12 myself, but you are right about Square - they seem very reluctant to try anything new when it comes to story or combat - just look at Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey for more proof of this. Although they do occasionally come up with something non-FF related thats pretty unique, such as Xenogears, but I dont think they want to risk anything like that for a main FF title in case some people dont like it - for example, Xenogears was nearly banned in America for its controversial plot.

::EDIT::Disregard everything I said about FFXIII coming to PC, I got it mixed up with a different JRPG from Square-enix that's coming to 360. My bad

So.. it's... not coming? Arghz0rz!

I agree with you about their lack to make an effort when it comes to advancing the Final Fantasy series (despite what people say, I consider FF10 and FF12 as testaments to how much Square is willing to alter their core titles... so far at least), but it's almost ironic to see some fresh changes that were present in their other titles, namely Chrono series, Legend of Mana games, Live A Live (being one of the most unique RPG titles up to), etc. As if they're trying new stuff on their other games while leaving FF untouched for some reason, trend I hope they'll abandon in the future. We all love traditional jRPG approach to games, but it's getting old by now.

Square Enix Everything that Square Enix has made is pretty much shit IMO. The Squaresoft games are much better than the shit they've been coming out with lately.

You make it seem like this is the first time Square's ever done this (LOLNINTENDO).

Besides, in an interview a while back, when asked if XIII was going to be exclusive to the PS3, the response was: Yes... for now.

Nintendo was never really a threat to Sony IMO. The fans and whatnot always seemed to coexist to me unlike the rivalry between MS and Sony.

Combat wise FFXIII looks like an action adventure rpg game. Kind of like a mix between Crisis Core and Ninja Gaiden, but thats pure speculation.

I didn't find anything different between FFX and the ones prior to that one except the sphere grid system, but they always invent new systems for each game. FFXII was shit to me. I'm trying to beat it just because I want to know what happens in the end, but I barely feel like turning the tv on to play it.

Maybe they keep Final Fantasy the same for those traditional lovers and create other games for people who want something new? That way they get the best of both worlds?
