The reefs are absolutely fascinating. I’m freaked out by water so I’ll probably never get to see one except on T.V…but they’re beautiful, and absolutely interesting. One example is that reefs aren’t plants-they’re semi-stationary animals. They release sperm and or eggs into the stream and let the currents carry them. The floating clouds of sperm fertilize the eggs.

Because there are so many different but closely related species of reef in a small area this often causes cross-breeding which inexorably creates -new- species of reefs that we’ve never seen before.

Another awesome thing is that there are myriads of various sea-horses that have evolved to take the colors and characteristics of different reefs. Every different reef has it’s own sea-horse.

My hands-down favorite characteristic of reef “cities,” however, is that reefs and animals fight for each other. One example is that shrimps/crabs live inside reefs, and when a rival reef attacks their home they defend it. However, when the attacking reef also has shrimps/crabs they actually fight each other. It’s almost like a battle with portable castles. XD

So, what are some other fun facts about reefs? Is anyone else as intrigued as I am?

In Philippines, there is this island where you can dive in to see the reefs underwater or just view them on the boat. Its really nice.

well i also love water, we went snorkeling on two different sea sanctuaries last summer, the sea horses there were murky in color... must be because the sea bed was also murky in color.
