Well, I listened to CoF quite a few years ago when I was transitioning from mainstream to underground metal. So I've listened to them since about '99 I think, though I haven't bought anything of their's in a few years.

Basically, early CoF is gothic black metal, especially their first two albums (or album and ep I should say). There next ablum was significatnly more gothic and they were severing their ties to the black metal scene they were initially trying to emulate and further developing their (then) unique sound. "Funeral in Carpathia" is a good song I still enjoy even now. Actually, the whole "Dusk and Her Embrace" album was very good. That was the peak of their career and worth checking out for anyone interested in extreme black/death metal

"Cruelty and the Beast" was a concept album they released next and was much more iron maiden (or NWOBHM if you prefer) inpsired. This was my introduction the band. In hindsight, the album suffered from lousy production, but the song writing was pretty good. Nick Barker was an awesome drummer (fucking faster than shit!) but he eventually went to greener pastures.

The band started to fall apart after that. With success Dani Filth's ego went out the roof, and each successive release became worse and worse. The label and band member turnover rate got higher, Dani got fat and arrogant, etc etc. They also got a lot of attention through their controversial t-shirts and somehow, lord only knows how, they got lumped in with nu-metal and got waaay more attention they ever should which also contributed to them falling apart.

The "appeal" of CoF is their originality when they came out. They combined the slow gothic metal with the fast Black Metal that was very popular, gave it their own english twist, and actually made something pretty interesting. Dani was also at one point a really gifted lyricist. Most death/black metal lyrics aren't very good. Dani really knew how to play with the english language and was quite well read so the results were quite interesting. His screeching definitely took some getting used to and certainly aren't for every one. Personally I think his nasty snarling screeching was a nice change of pace from all the cliche vocals of the time, kind of a bizarre gothic/black metal version of Johnny Rotten. Their initial imagery was quite appealing as well - very Lovecraftian and Crowleyian coupled with traditional gothic trappings.

Here are some good CoF songs to judge them by, not the crap they release now -

^ kind of like beer...oh wait wrong topic. I don't really think Cradle of Filth is that great either but I've never really given them the chance. Maybe if I sat down and seriously listened to some of their stuff? I might give it a try one of these days...just so that I can have my own personal opinion

especially you Pzycho. Good metal is not found on the radio.

Here's mine, I used to have Metal fever 2 years ago. Now I have listened so much of it that I'm taking a break and decided to explore other genres.

Opeth
Dream Theater
Dark Tranquillity
Moonspell
Sepultura (old days)
Metallica (old days)
Porcupine Tree
In Flames (before they sucked)
Childrem of Bodom (until I got sick from the singers voice)
Arch Enemy (before they had a female vocalist)
Meshuggah
A bit of Death
Nevermore
Mastodon
The Crown
Megadeth
Shadows Fall
Killswtich Engage (onle a few songs)
Pantera
Evergrey
God Forbid
some Iced Earth
Ministry
Testament
Motorhead

You get the idea.

Except that Dark Tranquility fails at being good melodic death metal.

Also.... do you like Killswitch Engage just because of their really interesting guitar riffs?

I find that I like them more and more whenever my guitar player Jon plays some of their riffs. But everything else about that band I dislike.

I'm going to plug some power metal, also, because power metal is the truest form of heavy metal around. And some progressive and melodeath.

Lost Horizon
Firewind
Early In Flames (Lunar Strain - Colony)
Dream Evil
Zero Hour
Vision Divine
3 Inches of Blood
Between the Buried and Me
Crotchduster (Because they have so many genius moments, like Star's Ingenious Cooter)
Cellador
Dragonforce
Dragonland
DGM
Hammerfall
Heed
Early Helloween
Hibria
Kamelot
Onmyouza
Sahara
Sonata Arctica
Stratovarius
Symphony X
The Black Mages
Hellspawned Warhammers of the Nordic Wind (lawls)

Power Metal is the cure for any ailment.

a.dark tranquility is fucking brilliant
b.you listen to dragonforce so you pretty much know jack shit about metal

http://www.last.fm/tag/melodic%20death%20metal

oh please, sure they are not "fucking brilliant" but they certainly are not as bad as you're saying.

it should have been:

Post-Reroute to Remain In Flames is about as "fucking brilliant" as Stephen Hawking is great in bed.
