I just joined this network, the following should explain what the software does. I think CR's should join and put their computer to good use and join up.

How Grid Technology Works

When idle, your computer will request data on a specific project from World Community Grid's server. It will then perform computations on this data, send the results back to the server, and ask the server for a new piece of work. Each computation that your computer performs provides scientists with critical information that accelerates the pace of research!

Donate the time your computer is turned on, but is idle, to projects that benefit humanity! We provide the secure software that does it all for free, and you become part of a community that is helping to change the world. Once you install the software, you will be participating in World Community Grid. No other action must be taken; it's that simple!

I'm a member and I really think you guys should install this. It's really simple and you're helping projects such as:

Help Cure Muscular Dystrophy Project
Genome Comparison Project
Help Defeat Cancer Project
Human Proteome Folding - Phase 2 Project
[email protected] Project

*From http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/about_us/viewAboutUs.do :

World Community Grid's mission is to create the world's largest public computing grid to tackle projects that benefit humanity.

Our work has developed the technical infrastructure that serves as the grid's foundation for scientific research. Our success depends upon individuals collectively contributing their unused computer time to change the world for the better.

World Community Grid is making technology available only to public and not-for-profit organizations to use in humanitarian research that might otherwise not be completed due to the high cost of the computer infrastructure required in the absence of a public grid. As part of our commitment to advancing human welfare, all results will be in the public domain and made public to the global research community.

How Grid Technology Works
Making a difference has never been easier! Grid technology is simple and safe to use. To start, you register, then download and install a small program or "agent" onto your computer.

When idle, your computer will request data on a specific project from World Community Grid's server. It will then perform computations on this data, send the results back to the server, and ask the server for a new piece of work. Each computation that your computer performs provides scientists with critical information that accelerates the pace of research!

Downloading now. Thanks for the info. I've never heard of this before. Now I can feel like I'm helping out.

Ah, the feeling of fresh Karma in the morning. :)

EDIT: Should I join a specific Team? Does that even matter?

EDIT2: Sweet! And I posted a Myspace Bulletin to the people I know in real life. Maybe I can get some more people involved.

Good for you! If you need any help with the application, PM me.

Edit to above: Not really. The current project at the moment is phase2 of the Human Proteome folding by the way.
As long as you install it and let it run in the background, you're helping the research, joining teams is optional.

Stupid question alert: Will it hog CPU much?

Whenever PC decides its CPU is being abused too much, it shuts itself down. It'd not be a problem for me, but if it's processing data when it shuts itself down, will it affect the results?

am I the only one that thinks this is BS? I don't thinking having my computer on idle will help out with some major health problems... I think you need some actual hands on research....

Here are the system requirements:
http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/help/viewTopic.do?shortName=minimumreq#60

I don't think the results will be affected if your PC suddenly shuts down.

It's not BS look:

Well, here is a pic of the program running. I don't think it's BS, look at the explanation you get as the program runs:

The only thing is with this program, is that it runs painfully slow, i'd suggest changing the CPU Throttle to 100% from 60% to increase the pace. Also, as a side note, I'm a member of YorkU group.

same here. I checked back on the site and didn't see an upgrade option or anything mentioning a newer version.

I'm still pretty uneasy about it. I just don't think it really does anything but waste your time and give people a false feeling of hope. I mean if it made you do something, like give imput or something, that would help with statistical data... but just leaving your computer on idle and somehow it helps.... I don't buy it

Then don't download it and stop griping. Mauz, cadence and I might be deluding ourselves into false hope, but then again we might not be.

This project has 331 partners including several Universities and research centres. I think this is proof enough that its not bogus.

Also, for anyone that wants to speed up the process, here's a link that describes how http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=2683

It is run and funded by IBM so I'm sure it's not BS.
Thanks for the heads up, about to dl and install it.
