Wow! This is kinda surreal, yet I'm willing to try it.

Then don't download it and stop griping. Mauz, cadence and I might be deluding ourselves into false hope, but then again we might not be.

This project has 331 partners including several Universities and research centres. I think this is proof enough that its not bogus.

Also, for anyone that wants to speed up the process, here's a link that describes how http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=2683

Its called critical thinking, when someone says "hey this will help" or "do this because it is good" you should think "well does this really work?". Since no one has really had any other critical imput rather then just installing the program, I thought I would say something about it. Young and Impressionablel minds these days do things without thinking.... I've said all I need, I'm over it.

Thanks mauz15, I've seen those sites, but still, they don't say anywhere how it actually helps. I like this line the best -

"The resulting information matrix will form an invaluable database that can be continuously incremented as new genome sequences become available and will form the basic material for many functional studies within the scientific community at large."

That really just says nothing. It is a general line saying that when they get new genome sequences, I guess the program will help with later studies (what studies and how?). Maybe I'm just wondering, how this program actually helps people. Like does it do actual problems on your computer (why people's computers and not the technological help from IBM since people have said IBM has donated hard and software why not use those computers?)

I'm all for helping people, I guess I just was wondering how it did, and people are upset because I'm just wondering why. Oh well, I guess if it helps, somehow, I could live with that.

Well you have to think about how massive the idea of curing a neurological disorder such as muscular dystrophy is. While I'm sure there are thousands of scientists around the world doing the actual research, all their info gets put into computers to have the numbers crunched. With a limited number of systems that number crunching could take longer than the research itself!

This system splits that work amongst the volunteer comps (ie: us) to get it done faster. Giving the researchers more opportunity to get work done. At least thats how I look at it, abridged at least.

And it's not just Neurological disorders either. We're talking about AIDS and such as well.

EDIT: Apologies if what I said came out harsh, I in no way meant to criticize. I just think it's such an easy way to help out. And to all those who do, coming from someone who has family members with Muscular Dystrophy, I thank you.

No one faults you for being skeptical dillz, but I think the program works in much of the same way that cadence described, or at least from what I understand of it. My only complaint, is that one can't actually view the calculations being done nor are we assured its being sent back to the reasearchers.

Yeah I agree, at first I was clueless about what the program was doing.
perhaps this links will help

You should look around their forums and perhaps create a thread asking how it works.

Thanks for a little more info on it, I also agree you should be about to see what is being done on your computer. I mean the site just has stats on people who have the program, ect, but not like it is doing this calculation on this type of illness. I think the problem I have with it, its not a problem really, it is that it just doesn't tell you all the info. Thanks for helping me a bit, I'm not some evil man that doesn't want to help people, just someone that likes to know stuff. The whole thing is still pretty unclear, but I do get you can do calculations on other people's computers, just why not set up, with help from IBM, a group of computers that do it faster then just when people have their computer on idle. Sorry to bug you guys with this...

You're not bothering anyone, this is what a forum is about.
and you're keeping the thread alive which is good because sometimes good topics tend to silently die here.

Good Topic Bump. Come on people get involved!! lol

No but really adjusted the CPU throttle and now it's going much faster. Good call Cbisram.

And Mauz I don't think we ever found out about your version of the program. Yours seems to be a more current version. Any reason? or better yet does it actually make a difference? or does it just look cooler. (Cause it really does :))

I have no clue. I just updated it 3 days ago because I had to get a new computer.
maybe because you're new members?

I must be living in a hole! Thanks for pointing this out, I would love to give it a try since my computer sits on idle for a good portion of the day while I chase after children...

do any of you guys know whether hibernation is better than having it on normally?, every time my laptop goes into that mode it seems to speed up even more than usual

I think it does. But I have never tried it.
For some reason my program keeps restarting every two minutes. I think this is not compatible with Vista yet. =/
