The majority of rap is crap, for obvious reasons. Although there are the ocassional rappers who have good musical contributions to make. I still don't enjoy the rap though regardless of whether it's the normal horrible, or the rare good.

I think some rap is actually good, like the old stuff (or 90's stuff) 2pac, B.I.G., Public Enemy, etc. I like very little rap now, but I like some more of the underground stuff.

I do like listening to some hip-hop/rap occasionally, especially the artists who're influenced by outside genres like Mike Shinoda [Fort Minor] or rap about real issues in their part of the world, like MC Solaar [French rapper]...

Yeah Mike Shinoda is a breath of fresh air to rap. He has a great flow and talks about real stuff. Listen to his song "Cigarettes". its excellent. I'm going to check out the MC Solaar to. i don't speak french but I'm sure I can find english translations of his lyrics.

Also, Gym Class Heroes is pretty good. A little emo-ish for my tastes but I enjoy their music.

EDIT: I just realized I missed like the whole 2nd page of posts. Thank you Azrael for a quality post. I agree that a lot of mid-90's rappers did lack content. But I also think that is due in part to the business aspect of the music industry. unfortunately to get heard at all they had to play into the stereotype. (although they probably didn't need much prodding there) At the same time a lot of the gangster stuff is a medium, an exaggeration most likely, but like you said with the paint brush example; I believe its just a the palette that they choose to paint with.

And 50 cent should just shoot himself. Although his old stuff like "How to Rob and Industry N****" was pretty good. It was before he got money...and shot 9 times.

I used to like rap...a while back when I was a little pos. I suddenly disliked it after I decided I was a poser and only annoying white kids like it. Some rap songs have meaning like azael910 said but after you listen to the song like maybe twice in a week you get annoyed of it. I also agree with it defining the African American society today, I mean, how many black kids do you think listen to techno or rock? I actually know two but they still listen to rap more. I maybe have thirty rap songs on my ipod out of like 2k that I never listen too. Ah, my friends and I do like one aspect of it. We make fun of it a lot. Like they'll just randomly yell out in class BALLIN'. I swear to god the most annoying rap song ever.

Rather than repeating everyone's opinion (I do agree, 70's - early 90's rap = good stuff, the old school shit), I'd like to focus on the future..

So say hip-hop finally dies out as a trend (seems to me like that's coming soon, given more and more people are getting sick of the crap), think it'll get good again? A return to the old school kinda days? I like this renaissance of rap idea. I hope that folds out. Maybe the underground artists will rise when the crap finally passes.

Not like you can't express your opinion, please feel free. No worries.
