Rap is fine as long as you stay away from the well-known, mainstream crap-- which is completely intelligible as it's mostly written by a bunch of fucking half-wits.

There are a lot of small, lesser known artists out there whose lyrics actually make sense and having meaning.

There was a time when rappers would focus on important issues, such as politics, civil rights and equality and uplifting, family-friendly songs were what flowed through the mainstream into the ears of the youth, and a time when rap songs were carefully edited and revised and never made to be one hit wonders.

Unfortunately, that time was the 1980s. Which leads us to now. All that matters now in rap music is having that "money in the bank", pimping, gang wars, stealing, sex, and every other stupid thing that these new rappers support.

It's like Nas said, "Hip hop is dead." All we have now is crap, and you can't spell crap without rap.

Everyone pretty much said what I was going to say. heh >.>

I've never really been into this kind of music, but I do listen to a few artists. I also grew up with an older brother who loved this music (and still does), so I know a few things here and there about it. heh
I guess you can say I don't really listen to it, but I have respect for the genre.

And there are a few good artists still out there, like most of you are saying. They just aren't Mainstream (like "MF Doom").

Ugh, and I really wish someone would please put an end to all this Bling-Bling Crunk shit... xO

KRS-One is kinda on fire though - his new album with Marley Marl is dope

The mainstream crap people hear nowadays are effed up as hell - Akon annoys the crap out of me, stuff like Lil' John is just stupid as hell - theres just so many rappers/emcee's out there that just disgrace Hip Hop

Rap is not dead. it depends on wat u like. I think the music was good way bak but it stil has the energy to get someone out of there seat and start dancing, so I dont think it is crap.

u cant say 2pac only rapped about problems , most of it was about thus life. I think the the thug life has died down in rap , and I say thats a good thing

You know Nas also had a helping hand in killing hip hop lol
Thinks bad to "Hate me now" with P Diddy....

There are some good alternative rap groups such as Gym Class Heroes still left.

True they're not that bad but Clothes Off! does define a song that is pretty shitty but it's catchy I will admit lol especially Patrick's part

Gym Class isn't what I think of when I think of current rap.. Yes mainstream rap is dead, but there are a few saving graces, ever heard of Lil Wayne, MF Doom, Madlib, MEP, etc? They're around, you just have to look around for them.

Rap has really gone to the gutter. I can't lie tho, I like some of the songs but most of it is trash. When we think of music, its an expression or an art form. We see that in all other kinds of music except for rap. There are only a handful of artists with any true artistic value in rap. U can't tell me that "This Is Why I'm Hot" is an expression of art, its shit.

I was watching a video last night and i was like where has rap come to? Wat happened to Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Common, Kanye West and others? Rap is really not looking good nowadays, but I still support it.
