the tutorial is taking longer than expected to write (damn me for choosin such a difficult hairstyle), so i'll post back when it's done. hairlines, lighting and shadings remaining. (plus the air brooch i noticed not so long ago)

edit: There is a thunderstorm out there. I'll continue working, but it could delay the end of the writing.

I'm going to eat and then i upload the pictures, last step before posting the actual tutorial.

yay, double posting for the right cause \o/

First:
Choose a hairstyle you want to reproduce.
I'll use this one for the demonstration:

Next, open the character template for wich you want to get a hairstyle in gimp.

Now, place the Gimp windows so they won't get in your way as you work.

Now, time to get started with the creation.

There is two option you can use: "free hand" (as I will use) and redrawing over the original.

I prefer free hand, but it's a bit trickier.

Select a circle with the circle selection tool, it must be over the chibi head and must be a little bigger.
Now fill it with a base color using the bucket tool (/!\must be done on a new layer/!\)
The chibi is now over the circle to show ou the ratio.

Next, with the circle layer over the template, reduce the opacity (circle layer) to something around 80% (just enough to see the chibi trough the circle.

Now, usint the path tools, place points where the hairs "borders" change direction. ( front hair firts, rear hairs will come later)

Once this step is done, shape the path you just created by curving the lines between each points so it looks like the original.

Now adjust the size of the circle so it cover all of the path, convert path to selection, and reverse selection.

Now, select the circle layer and press CTRL+X to remove the excess from the circle.
You can now as well set opacity bact to 100%

Continue the same way for the rear hair (you may want to do it in many layers, it's sometime easier)
http://someonebodyster.googlepages.com/tutoimg9.jpeg
(image with the chibi between the rear an the mid front layer)

Now, let's give some edge to these hairs (process to be repeated wich each layer)

Select a layer, then right click on it and select alpha to selection.
Then, on a new layer, fill the selection with black.
Reduce the selection by one pixel and crop it (ctrl+x)

Now, on the border layer, remove the lines you don't want.
(no need for a picture)

Traces excess lines you didn't get while creating the border with the path tool and the draw path button.

Next is the shading lighting part:

In my hairstyle, i can either shade or light, but either way, it's the same technique.

First, select the zone to modify using the path tool (ctrl to remove path from selection, shift to add path to selection)
then, fill the zone (on a new layer) with either white(lighting) or black(shading) and then reduce the opacity so it look like the original.

Lastlys, remove the form of the head from the template so there won't be hairs instead of the face.

Congrats, you've finished your hairstyle!

You now just have to remove the template from the picture and save it as a png.

Oh very cool! I didn't think you could do that curving technique in GIMP... actually I don't even know if Photoshop has it, lol... I know Flash does, but that's vector. xD
