Originally I knew Spanish (Puerto Rican dialect), then spoke Spanglish...but my parents said "English only (American)"! They didn't want us to stand out, and they believed if we clung to our Spanish we would have trouble (academically) in school (American). So, eventually, for lack of someone to speak Spanish to, I can no longer speak or write it, but I can understand it when it is spoken and read it as well as other Latin based languages. I also used to know some German (lived in Germany for awhile), but from misuse I have forgotten how to speak it but can still understand some. I have recently learned ASL (American Sign Language), enough to function, I haven't mastered it yet. I'm still working on it.
I am part of the 1st generation born in USA. One thing I have noticed is that some the previous generation before us (and this applies to other 1st gen I know from other foreign countries) are ashamed or embarrassed of their native tongue/culture so they "Americanize" their children and try to do so to themselves....What's up with that?

I speak English natively (whether I'm fluent is another matter entirely). While I'm by no means fluent in Japanese, I appear to know much more than I think I do, and most of the trouble I have in conversations appears to stem from my limited vocabulary (reading it, of course, comes with its own difficulties). All the Spanish I know I learned from Sesame Street, all the Chinese (both Mandarin and Cantonese) I know I learned from Firefly (so mainly poorly-pronounced-but-creative insults), I briefly studied German, ASL, Latin and Arabic in school, and I've picked up a smattering of French, Russian, Swedish, Italian, Persian and Portugese, but in none of these languages (other than Japanese and English), can I put together anything more complicated than simple Dick, Jane and Spot-ish sentences, if even that.
So functionally, I probably speak about one and a half languages.
