"Why does Asia Need Jerry Yan?,"
Friday December 9, 2008 Japan

Pg 23
With an ailing Taiwanese TV scene, what are Jerry’s hopes for the future and the meaning of his existence?

One could say that the Taiwanese movie scene is on a revival but the TV arena is still lackluster as a whole.

{Meteor Garden} did caused a sensation but in truth the irony is that it was fleeting.

Hong Kong and Mainland are going in a direction different from the Taiwan Entertainment Circle.

They want personable works.

Yet Taiwan is fortunate in that there are such talents to carry on the uniqueness of Taiwanese movies.

But the TV scene is something else. Under similar conditions, {Meteor Garden} a manga inspired serial was a huge hit.

Many other serials also followed suit but these manga inspired serials seemed to have reached their limit.

The one that has proved his worth is none other than Jerry.

{The Hospital} had good reviews for giving us the hope of fresh possibilities in its departure from the usual drama serials.

You can say that the responsibility of saving the Taiwanese TV serials in the ratings race depends on Jerry.

When that certain someone came, he spoke in Japanese

“Everyone’s been working so hard, I only know a little Japanese. Would you like a sweet?” (Ha ha! He really know how to work his charm)

When Jerry came in
The room seemed to have lit up
That was my first impression
Feels the same as like Dao Ming Si entered
All these years and the feeling has been the same
the reason should be that Jerry has always been Jerry

Jerry Yan is a member of the Taiwanese TV serial [Meteor Garden]. As an artiste, he has accomplished so much. What would be his goals in 2009? Which will be written down as a historic record?

Jerry rise to an Asian Superstar had its beginning as Dao Ming Si.

Since broadcasting {Meteor Garden}, F4 had reached a peak in the Chinese Drama trend. Jerry Yan acting as Dao Ming Si in the serial has worn him countless hearts of Asian women.

In 2008, not only in acting, he also performed in Japan concerts with F4 to phenomenal success.

Whether as a member of F4 or as an actor, he is always very serious in what he does. With such all-embracing charisma and widespread popularity, an Asian Star like Jerry Yan is indeed a rare find.

Due to a single serial, F4 shot to Stardom and became a trend.

The handsome and vivacious F4 turned into Star Idols in the hearts of Asian women.

These are the secrets to their success. Amongst them, Jerry Yan who starred as Dao Ming Si was to most outstanding.

He focused on his work and took up different roles in varied TV serials so as not to disappoint our expectations.

Not only is he dashing, his acting has been improving as well.

Not only in the ‘idols department’ but also in many areas, his popularity and charisma till now has not been overtaken by any.

And he will keeping going on.

Later on, Jerry talk about the process of acting as Dao Ming Si. It is a kind of serendipity.
He feels that it was like a dream now.

Speaking so frankly and with any hint of ambition, really feels somewhat intriguing. Because the Taiwanese Entertainment Circle is totally different from that of Hong Kong and Mainland
The competition in this line is synonymously intense, bizarre and motley

(The reporters are rather familiar about the environment of Chinese Entertainment Circle)

To survive in this line up till now and still maintain an innocence and purity, I can’t help but have my doubts.

Some have been answered during this interview

One would be the meaning of a certain someone being a part of F4, another is his mother and his growing-up environment.

An ecstatic F4 event

The certain someone talked about spraying soda all over after that it was actually Zai Zai’s suggestion, but Zai Zai didn’t do it. So he was the one who silly enough to do it. He will never forget Zai Zai’s mischievous grin

I will definitely find an opportunity to repay him for that (laughs)

Feels a little lonely, but I became chattier, and realized the responsibility involved. Feels secure about this, but of course there are times of uneasiness too.

The difference in an individual and F4 group event. The cumulative experiences, has made Jerry what he is today. It is not something he learnt text-book style but through preserving in his own integrity formed so naturally. It should where his innocence originate.

The Director of {Skip Beat} commented this about Jerry

After becoming a Superstar he has become more and more humble. Working harder and harder. This is his charm.

Jerry’s kind of innocence where does it actually come from?

It stems from his family environment

Jerry said that "I really like the movie ‘Dancing in the Dark’, I will even put my mum, and the mum in the movie together. Reminiscing about my mum at time, my heart will ache. I’m not someone who loves to cry (laughs). When I was very poor in my childhood. During my High School days. My mum bought me a bicycle for the first time. I was on cloud nine, but after riding it for a shot while. Due to a traffic situation, the bicycle was flattened. I was injured too. Actually my injuries were nothing. I just felt that my mum worked so hard to buy a bicycle for me ~~I felt so bad towards my mum.

At that time, after school I would ride my bicycle to fetch my mum. If my mum get off work early. She would fetch me instead. I always ride my bicycle to fetch my mum ~~
I swore to protect her from then on. My mum struggled to bring up my sister and I. So this manner of thinking is very intense."

Because of his love and tenderness to his mum no matter how big or hard the problems, he would just simply face up to them~~

Jerry seems very fabulous in his appearance, but perhaps when you dismiss some prejudice, he really has a heart of purity. This was his charm that he could hold fast to.

Laid a foundation

It is in fact this charm that enabled him to be such a one-of-a-kind Taiwanese Idol. Captured the hearts of all Asian women. So dashing. Had to keep one’s maternal instincts in check.

This is Jerry’s greatest charm!

Then I asked Jerry about his future expectations and his hopes for any challenging works

Jerry said humbly,

‘I hope to face many more challenges in the future. Whatever the storyline, no matter which area or even my partner in the collaboration, I’ll take whatever comes my way. There is no specific standard to meet. As long as I have an audience who likes me, even if there is only 1 left, I will still carry on.’

~ The End~

Title ~ Awaiting a New Perspective of New Works

His existence shows that he is the pioneer in the new generation of idols!?

Jerry Yan became the hot topic when he performed with F4 in their first ever Japanese concert

His individual activity in 2009 will also be closely watched

With 2 serials in production, there are new developments too

The Japanese fans are awaiting the airing of {Hot Shot} and the hot topic is his collaboration with other idols

Looking forward to Jerry Yan’s new work.

~ THE END

"Terri Kwan curses Jerry Yan saying he is stupid, mutually retaliates during love scenes,"
Wednesday January 14 2009, Taiwan

Jerry Yan & Terri Kwan have very different personalities. Jerry thinks too much, while Terri doesn’t like to think. However, the 2 are pushed together to film PTS’s new idol drama ‘Starlit’, and creates some explosive conflict. Terri revealed that the 2 would often bicker with each other, but now looking back, the whole filming process was very memorable, because “the gunpowder outside filming, turned into sparks during filming.”

Main cause of conflict; likes to snatch lines

‘Starlit’ filmed in Shanghai for one month and a half. Terri challenges the role of a patient with a rare disease - Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), and has the most scenes with Jerry. Initially, there were rumours saying that Jerry had got angry at Terri’s assistant, and this lead to their relationship deteriorating to the highest point. However, Terri said: “Salt (her nickname for Jerry) didn’t la! The real reason for us bickering was because he kept snatching lines, and wouldn’t let me finish talking.” Their most serious argument was once when Terri even cursed Jerry saying he is ‘stupid’ and ‘excessive’.

Not hard to please; just has high standards

Terri & Jerry would constantly fight and then make-up, during their cold wars, the 2 would take advantage of the love scenes in the drama to mutually retaliate eg, Jerry would be especially rough when grabbing her collar, and Terri would use a lot of strength when having to beat his chest. Everytime they argue, Jerry’s reactions are not the same, sometimes he will argue back, sometimes he will apologise. Terri said: “I don’t think his reactions are called ‘hard to please’, it’s just that he has high standards for himself.”

Throws slipper; director is even more fierce

There was once, when Jerry wasn’t happy with his own performance, and he roared at the sky, like an orangutan, and when asked Terri whether she got a big fright, she replied: “No la, because Director Lin was even more fierce! The director would throw blue-and-white slippers at me, and he has very good technique, it’ll just graze past my face, it won’t hit me.”

Terri has collaborated with many male stars; she was worked with Jerry and Ken Zhu, both from F4. She analysed: “Male idols are too polite, there was a great sense of distance between me and Ken, but collaborating with Jerry gave me a sense of big challenge.” After the drama finished filming, she especially thanked Jerry: “If it wasn’t for you, I would never have stayed in a 5-star hotel!”

"Jerry Yan guests on 'Kang Xi Lai Le' ; Xiao S bombards him with relationship questions,"
Thursday January 15, 2009 Taiwan

Jerry Yan is quite stubborn when it comes to going on shows; he refuses to talk about his relationships. Unfortunately, he meets fiery Xiao S and even he can’t do anything about it! In the end, he is forced to admit that he previously lived together with his ex-girlfriend and he also likes to watch romantic A-films, letting this interview sink into a semi-surrender state!

Jerry doesn’t like to talk about relationships; Xiao S insists on looking at his underwear

To promote for upcoming PTS idol drama ‘Starlit’, Jerry went on ‘Kang Xi Lai Le’ for the first time, and he invited his co-stars Terri Kwan and Liu Rui Qi to accompany him, as he was afraid of Xiao S asking him about his relationships. But unexpectedly, on the show, Xiao S releases full firepower, and even his co-stars couldn’t do anything to help him.

Because before the show, Jerry had already expressed that he does not wish to discuss any relationship matter, as soon as filming started, Xiao S asked directly: “Do you want to talk about your relationships, or do you want me to look at your underwear?” Since Jerry did not reply, Xiao S immediately ran to the back of him, and pulled up his clothing, and she even chased Jerry around the studio. In the end, she said: “I saw it! Very normal style, it’s grey boxers, with white elastic belt.”

Jerry reveals he initially lived with his girlfriend; Xiao S knows it was for 2 years

Although she has already seen his underwear, Xiao S is still in a hot pursuit in asking about his relationships. She bombards him with questions: “When was your last relationship? Was she over 170cm in height?” Jerry replied that his last relationship was within a year, but as for her height, he was unwilling to disclose, seems that he is afraid Xiao S will pigeon-hole her as Lin Zhi Ling.

Cai Kang You skillfully asks the guests to guess: “Has Jerry lived together with his girlfriend in the past? How long?” Xiao S guessed “once, for 2 years” and Terri guessed “three times, 2, 4, 1 year” and Jerry answered: “Xiao S is more close.” Xiao S then replied: “I didn’t guess randomly, I know these things.”

Xiao S bombards; Jerry confesses

Xiao S asked Jerry the reason for his last break-up and he revealed that he was “very bad and immature,” so the 2 broke-up naturally. Cai Kang Yong couldn’t help but ask: “So do you still love her now?” Towards this, Jerry refused to answer directly and said: “In the past, we loved each other, definitely will have feelings.”

As the relationships topic drew to a close, Xiao S then asked: “Do you watch A-films, what type do you like to watch?” Jerry did not reply to both, but said that he likes to watch romantic ones; Xiao S then asked: “Will you dare to shower naked infront of a mirror?” Jerry said: “No, because I don’t have any confidence in my body.”

Xiao S: Jerry electrifies someone else’s wife

Cai Kang Yong asked Xiao S: “Have you fantasised about Jerry?” Xiao S expressed that there was once when Jerry went on ‘100% Entertainment’ and he very passionately pinched her face, but then the second time they met, he was like a person who she had just met; felt very unfamiliar. Although Da S and Jerry are quite close, Xiao S feels that Jerry is a person who is sometimes cold, sometimes hot.

However, out of all the male artists that she has interviewed, Xiao S feels that Jerry is the one electrifies her the most, she said impolitely: “When he talks to me, his eyes will keep on electrifying at me, I’m already married, what does he want!”

"Jerry Yan films car crash scene for 'Starlit'; $50million insurance,"
Friday January 16 2009, Taiwan

After ‘Hot Shot’, Jerry Yan collaborates with Director Lin once again for upcoming PTS drama ‘Starlit’. Initially, he thought he would film a literary love drama, but unexpectedly, he was unable to escape from Director Lin’s plan – car crash, broken hand, his first meet with Terri results in a very bloody scene, not only does Terri scream panickedly, even Jerry realistically screams out pain! To ensure safety, the production company insured $50,000,000 for Casualty, and Jerry laughed: “Not bad! If my hand really gets crushed, I can earn $50,000,000 red packet!”

In the first episode that is about to premiere, there will be a car crash resulting in broken hand scene and all of the emotions in this drama are based on this starting point. In the drama, it is because of this scene that Jerry and Terri develop an unbreakable love. Outside the drama, the 2 are like brothers and they laughed: “Luckily it’s not breaking arm, it’s just breaking-hand-to-set-love (idiom)” To make the scene as realistic as possible, several test scenes had to be personally done by Jerry, and this made Jerry’s fans who were watching outside scream in fear. Because of this, filming had to be stopped many times, and Director Lin could not help but yell at Jerry: “It’s all your fault!” And as for his mood in filming this scene, Jerry feels that in order for filming to go smoothly, he must overcome his nerves and cannot look panicked in front of everyone! After watching his previous shots, he feels that he was too nervous and too desperate to do a good job, also giving himself too much pressure as he wanted to do well in all aspects, hence this time, his mood was much more relaxed, hopefully everyone will see a very different Jerry Yan.

During filming of ‘Starlit’, what made the crew most happy was that after Jerry joined in filming, it made Director Lin, who normally has a very bad temper, suddenly have a very good mood. He would talk and laugh with Jerry, and even when Jerry’s fans outside saw Director Lin, they would exclaim: “Director Idol!” At the same time, because Director Lin is known to be a high-pressure speedy director, the words ‘Beast Area’ was taped outside his door. And Jerry also displayed his excellence tacit understanding with Director Lin; there was one day when they filmed over 40 scenes; super amazing speed.

This Sunday (1/18), Sherwood Hotel will hold a ‘Starlit’ press conference, and besides actors Terri Kwan, Chen Zhi Kai attending, Jerry, who hasn’t been seen for a long time in Taiwan, will accept an international interview from media. Evidently, we can see how important this drama is to Jerry, and at the same time, reporters will release a 20-minute preview, especially for ‘Starlit’ fans. Today, PTS will release an exclusive interview with Jerry, prior to the press con, where he talks about filming this drama on the ‘Starlit’ WRETCH blog. Tomorrow, after PTS ‘Balance on the Maltese’ finishes, they will release a 10-minute exciting BTS of ‘Starlit’, to please fans!

"Jerry's co-habitant? Lin Zhi Ling: Nothing to do with me,"
Saturday January 17, 2009 Taiwan

Two days ago at Kang Xi Lai Le recording, Jerry replied he lived with his girlfriend for 2 years. Outsiders began to think she is Lin Zhi Ling, whom he had been rumoured with. Yesterday, through her manager Gaby, Lin Zhi Ling said "there is nothing to reply, nothing to do with me, he was not referring to us." It is said that after Jerry broke up with Lin Zhi Ling, he dated a model.

At the recording, Xiao S asked: "when was your last romance?", Jerry replied "within 1 year". He did not reply when asked if she is over 170cm. Then, Cai Kang Yong wanted the others present to guess if Jerry ever co-habit with his girlfriend and for how long. Xiao S guessed with 1 girlfriend for 2 years, Guan Ying guessed 3 girlfriends duration 2,4,1 years. Jerry replied Xiao S answer is close. Xiao S said "My guess was based on what I know."

Jerry's manager said Jerry did not mention about co-habit with whom in the program. He did not answer with the hosts questioned, viewers will know after watching the broadcast.

"Ken Zhu is getting married? Jerry Yan surprised,"
Monday January 19 2009, Taiwan

Kelly Lin and Ken Zhu’s marriage news has become a mystery. Yesterday, during the ‘Starlit’ press conference, when Jerry Yan heard from the media that Ken is about to get married, he revealed that earlier when F4 were holding concerts, the 4 indeed talked about this, and they agreed that they had all reached the age of marriage. However, Jerry still feels very surprised: “Ken has always been very low-key in everything he does, sometimes when he does things, the rest of us won’t even know about it. However, if the rumours are true, then of course I will congratulate Ken.”

Jerry expressed, that in the past, he has never seen Ken bringing Kelly to meet everyone. Even during their concerts in Japan, when everyone was saying that Kelly Lin attended to show her support, he never actually saw her.

As for himself, earlier Jerry went on ‘Kang Xi Lai Le’ and since he rarely reveals anything, this caused a huge uproar. Because during his conversation with Xiao S, everyone seemed to think that the signs were all pointing to Lin Zhi Ling, who he had done a bathrobe photoshoot with in the past. Yesterday, Jerry stressed that he did not say on the show that he had lived with his girlfriend for 2 years, don’t know why there are such rumours. But being Lin Zhi Ling’s friend, he expressed he will go see ‘Red Cliff II’ to support her.

Jerry did a spectacular job in his crying scenes in ‘Starlit’, but he was questioned by the media for being inarticulate (mumbling), and he joked: “It’s because Terri plays the role of someone with ALS, after filming, she spread it to me.” At the press conference, female lead Terri Kwan also showed off an adapted version of ‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Star’ but because of the strong flashes from the reporters’ camera, it reflected onto the piano, and she couldn’t see the sheet music so she made a mistake.

In ‘Starlit’, Jerry plays a gifted pianist, and Terri plays a sick patient with ALS. Yesterday, when Terri was onstage showing off her piano skills, Jerry was enjoying her performance offstage, and he joked: “It feels like I’m the one with ALS.”

"Chinese, Japanese, Korean 'Meteor Garden' big PK,"
Tuesday January 13, 2009 China

In April 2001, Chinese-Taiwan version ‘Meteor Garden’ used ‘meteor’ speed to sweep through the whole of Asia. To this day, this ‘pretty boys’ cyclone has not stopped. First, Japan was unhappy that someone else had stolen the limelight from their own manga. Hence in 2005 and 2007, they too released their own ‘Hana Yori Dango’ and following closely afterwards, at the end of 2008, Korean version‘Boys Before Flowers’ has once again become the hottest topic.

Perhaps it is because 8 years ago, Chinese-Taiwan version ‘Meteor Garden’ left too many indelible memories on everyone, because even when the Japanese version was released many years later, it was still considered the most classic, the best. Today, after Japanese version ‘went through fire and water’, Korean version ‘Boys Before Flowers’ first group of fans have commented: “full Kimchi flavour.” Just like the netizens said, Chinese-Taiwan version is first love, Japanese version is most loved, so what is Korean version left with? The most difficult thing to forget in one’s life is their first love, even when you get your true love, you will think back to the innocent and pureness of first love.

Chinese-Taiwan version: Da S

In life, she is very brave; she will do whatever she wants to do. The bold and strong Da S is similar to her own personality, and immediately reveals Shan Cai’s tenacity. Majority of netizens commented that Da S gave a very natural performance.

Japanese version: Inoue Mao

With her girl-next-door image, Inoue Mao was mocked “only has 5 expressions.” Of course, Japanese version places great importance on detail, as beautiful Da S is constantly changing clothes, Japanese version Shan Cai basically only has one jacket and uniform to change back and forward. This is more in line with the image of a poverty-stricken girl.

Korean version: Koo Hye Sun

She has a petite figure, and pretty and cute image, however netizens thought that Koo Hye Sun’s image looked too old; has a strong taste of ‘mother’. The scary thing is, ‘mother’has to pretend to be ‘inexperienced’, if it’s not pouting her mouth to look innocent, then it’s widening her eyes to look surprised.

PK conclusion:

Being the star amongst the ‘pretty boys’, stubborn and strong, has the courage to accept challenges, love and hate, actually she doesn’t need Michelle Reis’s dignity, Ariel Lin’s cuteness or Zhang Zi Yi’s 小家碧玉*. In this sense, Da S version of Shan Cai has the most grass-root spirit out of the 3.

Chinese-Taiwan version: Jerry Yan

Apparantly, Jerry Yan does not like to smile because he doesn’t want people to describe him as ‘cute’. However, his inadvertent smile really gives off a ‘half naïve half mature’ feeling. Plus, with his classic line: “If an apology works, then why do we need police,” netizens insist ‘he is Dao Ming Si.”

Japanese version: Matsumoto Jun

As soon as Dao Ming Si appeared, netizens criticised him for being much shorter than the other 3. Hence Matsumoto Jun’s Japanese F4 was heavily criticised by the audience for looking too 'passer-by.'

Korean version: Lee Min Ho

We can see that the film crew put in a lot of effort to find someone who looks like Jerry Yan, indeed looks very alike. But how come Dao Ming Si’s hair has become a buddha head?

PK conclusion:

One side of him is the cold, self-centred leader of F4, the other side is the shy little boy who has a warm smile whenever he thinks of Shan Cai; the strong contrast of Dao Ming Si really is the highlight of the whole drama. Handsome but self-centred, tall, childish, to encompass all these features, Chinese-Taiwan version Dao Ming Si obviously wins very easily.

Chinese-Taiwan version: Vic Zhou

Even with Vic’s rigid body and paralysis facial expression, it does not cover up his melancholy temperament, as if he’s walked straight out of a comic. Even until now, Zai Zai will forever be the Hua Ze Lei in many peoples’ hearts.

Japanese version: Oguri Shun

Compared to Vic Zhou, Oguri Shun gives a lot more affection and laziness to Hua Ze Lei’s character. With his golden-coloured hair, tall in height, and casual attitude, Hua Ze Lei’s features are displayed drippingly by Oguri Shun. However, it does seem similar to the character he plays in ‘Hana Kimi’.

Korean version: Kim Hyun-Jeong

Korean version ‘Hua Ze Lei’ is probably the most irresponsible to fans, out of the 3 versions. Besides his hollow expression from his eyes, he always looks straight ahead, and has no focus at all. Netizen’s comments are very straightforward: “If he wears glasses, he’s basically Bae Yong Joon.”

PK conclusion:

Pretty but expressionless face; eyes are often filled with fog; the longest sentence he says is: “I’m not interested in other people’s matters.” He likes to spend his whole day on the rooftop by himself.. towards this kind of character, that doesn’t seem to belong to this world, Vic Zhou and Oguri Shun are tied.

PK summary:

The Japanese version’s narrative style is significantly more in line with the original manga.

Did you know that they stopped filming Skip Beat?
It's because Jerry has too many requirements I think.
But it's just a pause, hopefully they will keep filming.
I saw this on the Taiwan Yahoo News.

Did you know that they stopped filming Skip Beat?
It's because Jerry has too many requirements I think.
But it's just a pause, hopefully they will keep filming.
I saw this on the Taiwan Yahoo News.

Ahm... they haven't really stopped filming SB... it was actually been postponed sort of both parties are kinda busy nowadays and like u had said of "many requirements" on both sides...

*小家碧玉 = pretty girl of humble birth

I pretty much agree on this

out of the all those who played F4 leader I still prefer jerry yan same with reason stated above. Lee Min Ho is also doing a good job but one of the reason he got the part is bcoz he looks like jerry. and the korean version made the F4 leader a little bit tamer than what it's supposed to be or maybe bcoz they didn't give that much details on how arrogant and stubborn the F4 leader is. but don't get me wrong I enjoy all 3 versions.

Hua ze lei and Rui is a tie for me too.

and I prefer Shan Cai and Makino over Jan Di.
