In romance I particularly enjoyed the main plot twist of
Eikaiwa School Wars (pulled of very nicely): the girl is your typical Japanese heroine - only a little less flustered and a lot more stubborn and indifferent - but the guys is her English teacher, a foreigner who refuses to learn a word of Japanese.

It makes for hilarious conversations, especially when the girl doesn't say anything but "Damn."

And it isn't at all typical, which I like.
There will never be another anime like
Princess Tutu, that's for sure. Ugly duckling turned Clumsy Student turned Ballerina Princess? And a Prince who loses his heart, an evil raven and his daughter, a town controlled entirely by a manic puppeteer, and a knight with seemingly no power in the story? EPIC WIN.

In action, I really like the idea of
Soul Eater. God, any way you look it was meant to be a great
game, but it does for an equally great anime, anyway. I sort of like, for once, the way there are so many characters to choose from.
