i feel really bad for iljimae but ja dol has a worse life than him...at least geom grew up with parents who cared about him...ja dol was abandoned by his mother and was not really given a clear answer to who his father was...he was always screwed over by shi wan, not to mention he loves his sister more than a sister but technically he can't love her that way because they're supposed to be brother and sister...also, at least geom now has a "purpose" in life where as ja dol is more confused about his ideantity

oh...and just to add in...does anyone else hate eun chae? sure, she does a lot to help the poor...but SHE'S SO ANNOYING! like...i wish she could just try to keep herself out of trouble. i don't like it how they pair her up with iljimae, just because she's pretty. it makes geom/yong/iljimae shallow. =_= i feel like I'm going to have a lot of contradiction on this comment...but w/e. =P

Eun Chae annoys me whenever she is with Iljimae or Yong-ee. They look so carbonated together. Yes, I do believe they initially paired her with Iljimae cuz she had the better looks and maybe they expected her to bring new dimensions to her character. On her own, she is a good side character but not really best actress performance with her lack of vibrancy and one dimensional, stiff portrayal of the noble lady.

I really commend the other supporting characters for bringing to the forefront their own personal tragedies. Their intertwined bad fate accounted for Iljimae's popularity. Even though they went through extreme trials in the course of their lives they were still able to overcome them and were happy.

Iljimae/Ryung, when just nine yrs of age he lost his whole family, saw his father and sister killed with his own eyes and was beaten and abused from that moment up to when he became a man. He has a half brother that he know nothing about and who is trying hard to kill him, even after he's aware Ryung is his half brother. He was almost beaten to death to save his step dads hand by his real brother. The father whom he loved so much that he said he was his arm, leg, heart and life was murdered when trying to protect him, something he'll have to live and suffer with. And to top it all off they were all killed unjustly. He was too afraid to look for his real mother for fear he'd lose her too. Then remember he had to throw a rock at his real mom to continue to live. What a heavy weight for a small child to carry. As much as he was beaten it's a wonder he had any sense left. But still he loved and cared for all the other people in his life.
And I agree, I really feel annoyed too when ever Eun Chae is with Iljimae. She just wasn't the right leading lady for a man like Iljimae.

I voted for Yong since he has such a burden and he has to pretend nothing happened when he watch his sister die, pretend he didn't care about Yang Soon's death and watch Bong Soon and KongKal fall off the cliff and all the other bad things happening around him, he has to act ignorant. But I think the second would probably be Shi Hoo, I love how the end he learns everything, like that Byun Shik isn't his father, even though the guy is proud of him, Swe Dol was caught by him, he helped frame his real father and all this time the guy who he hates the most is his real brother. I'm not really sure if he has even realized that Yeon was his sister.

Ja Dol definetly. It's that Geom lost all his family and witnessed it BUT Ja Dol had the identity crisis of having two fathers (one of who was a total jerk with him). Then he is raised away from the father he loves, only to lose him. And his REAL FATHER (Geom's father) he realizes that because of him his real father was murdered and his younger brother suffered such an unfortunate fate. On top of that he is in love with Eun Chae who takes him as her brother and she is in love with his younger brother. Ja Dol also sends his half-sister to her death basically. Ja Dol is basically stuck in the whole series of playing two roles, Ja Dol and Shi Hoo. He struggles with himself to be good enough but ends up making his worst mistakes.

It's pretty close for me, but I have to go with Geom/Yong/Iljimae.

Ja Dol/Shi Hoo does come fairly close though.

Shi Hoo since he has to endure pain and suffering imposed on him by his noble family for 13 years. Although Yongi's life is more tragic and tormenting but he had a good life for 13 years as he was growing up from age of 9 due to memory loss and enjoyed good life since he's born till age of 9.
