those who boast that they know japanese and they're american...no offense, since im talking about my classmate...
then she would just give names (all names from fruit basket) to her classmates...i was also a victim
she gave me the vice pres of the student council member first, forgot his name but its something like kakeru something...then she gave me the cow's name, hatsuharu

then she read a new manga so now, i think that if i come back from school, she would give each one another name...but yeah, she would be a perfect example of an annoying otaku

anime fan= u watch anime when u can n every once and a while ull buy a manga or an anime dvd cause u have other stuff to do dat doesnt involve anime
otaku=u watch anime 24/7, u own at least 15 manga or anime complete series, everything u talk about is related to anime, when someone says an anime name u feel the need to correct them(even if u dont know them), u own costumes from every anime u watch and u will cosplay on a daily basis

well dats wat i think anyway

In Japan, otaku are, in general, way more crazy-looking. Otaku in the original sense means a technology nerd who collects different things associated with his interests, which can be computer parts. That's been expanded to the guys who buy figurines of their favorite girl characters impulsively along with life sized female dolls. The place in Japan most famous for otaku is Akihabara.

In America, we've kind of expanded the definition of otaku into something more general. We say that people who like anime or watch a lot (and possibly collect figurines too) are otaku. However, unlike in Japan, being an otaku doesn't carry nearly as much of a social stigma. It used to be viewed as a sickness in Japan, since males are culturally expected to work hard and be beneficial to society. Animes, like Welcome to the NHK, often capitalize on this phenomenon as well.

I don't mind being called an otaku in the western sense, but being called a real Japanese otaku might be bad. `-`

Example : Code Geass

If you like it then discuss it sometimes, maybe buy the DVD when it's out, then you're an anime fans.

Your favourite character is C.C., you began to like her a lot, maybe collectiong her picture and buy some action figure of her or looking for C.C. H-doujin, you're an Otaku with few issues.

But if you began stalking in real-life looking for C.C. look-alike, you're an otaku with major issues.

yea...something along those lines

anime lover= has a life but loves anime too. they probably own a couple of manga books and anime dvds. they also sometimes go to anime cons, and may cosplay once in a while, but not over the top.

otakus= has no life whatsoever, usually is a person who doesn't have much of a job, owns WAY too many manga books and anime dvds, goes to pretty much all the anime cons they can, and always cosplays their favorite character (while being over the top and spouting anime lines every once and a while.)

I think the difference is the anime viewers only watch anime, maybe get some dvds or mangas but thats it. otakus collected everything from posters to t-shirts to those little figures where you can look at the panties of some random anime girl, they also cosplay, alot.

Otaku in my definition is a Wapanese who is someone who adds Japanese words to their english sentences constantly saying "baka, kawaii, desu" whenever they talk and is overly obsessed with anime taking it to an unhealthy level by doing their best to integrate the anime way into their lifestyle.

An anime fan is someone who watches anime and/or reads manga for fun while still participating in a wonderful thing called "life without anime".
