I think it was Rem the white shinigami who killed Watari.
He tried to save Misa Misa :]
You have to watch the first two Death Note movies to understand.

Rem killed watari because he needs to protect misa misa.
in the second movie, L had watari bring misa in so that everything will be expose.
what L didn't expect was for Rem to kill watari, for Rem to sacrifice himself to let misa live a little longer.
darn Kira!!!!! but then light was evil and smart enough to make those two prequels so good.

it was Rem(shinigami). On the plot of the story, Rem wrote Watari's name so that Misa Amane would live longer. ^_^
