Town passes law on cyberharassment

Something people here might want to be aware of:

In Dardenne Prairie, Mo., town officials have passed a measure making online harassment illegal.

It's a different kind of Megan's Law, made in response to the death of 13-year-old Megan Meier. She hanged herself last year after receiving a malicious message from a friend she met online.

A mother...driving her daughter to...suicide? *read the article* Thats horrible...well they say at least a third, but I guarantee way more then that. They just won't admit it. A law like that is somehow fair...

Can't agree any better. I mean c'mon, most of the ppl u met online aren't REALLY friends, just shallow forms of it. To go to such an extreme like suicide must have meant that the girl already was pretty troubled. A little letter like that doesn't push a sane person over the edge.

Cyber Friends are ppl you don't know. don't let what they say get into ur head.

It said that the alleged victim had a real acquaintance at school or something, and the victim's acquaintance's mother pretended to be a teenage boy online to see if the victim was saying bad things about the acquaintance.

At some point the crazy woman who was pretending to be a boy started harassing the victim.

It's unclear to me exactly what happened as I haven't read much about it but it sounds like it was more than just one harassing message. It sounded like the crazy woman manipulated a number of the girl's "online friends" into harassing the victim also.

I don't agree with legislation to regulate the internet from bullies, but I can understand why they would.

I feel sorry for the girl and her family, but I don't understand how a stranger online can push you to commit suicide. The poor kid must have already had some serious problems. I think the woman should have been charged with impersonating a minor. How can someone get charged with bullying online sounds kind of far fetched. who cares what ppl online call you its not as if there statements should really hurt you just ignore them.

That there shows how immature some people are even being in their 'adult' years, sigh.
