Darkness surrounded her as she regained consciousness. She was cold. A shiver ran down her spine as she realized there was something as cool as ice under her. The girl one handedly groped the object beneath her and threw herself up, crashing into and throwing off the top up her prison. She was touching a body! The girl let out a bloodcurdling scream and fell out of the coffin in her haste to get away. “Ow!”
After jumping to her feet she quickly took in her surroundings. She was alarmingly disarmed of her ever-present swords. The room was the size of a large bedroom and lacked windows. It was lit by candles. The only furnishings were the coffin with the body of a young man, a desk, a kotatsu, and a man sitting on a kneeling pillow… A what?! “You’re quite loud Lady Samurai.” the man informed her. He was small but taller than the girl with dark brown hair tied in a long, low pony tail and matching eyes. He was in his thirties which made him at least twice her age. Her heart leapt to her throat and her hand to her obi clutching the air where her sword should have been. “Do not worry my lady, you are not to be harmed.” The man told her holding his hands up to show that he had no weapon.
The girl kept her guard up and refused to speak. “Oh my, I suppose he did not explain anything to you properly.” He fretted, “It does appear as though you attempted to resist him.” Quickly the girl glanced at her kimono. The left arm was shredded from the elbow. The right shoulder was pulled half way down her forearm and the bottom third of the cotton dress below the obi was in tatters. Her eyes flashed back to the man. He hadn’t moved anything but his mouth as he muttered to himself unhappily. His attention fell back to her. “I’m terribly sorry my lady, please forgive my rudeness. My name is Ashikaga Tanezane. You may call me Tanezane for now. Master Johan is quite sorry to inconvenience you I’m sure.”, he motioned to the dead man, “Would you like me to fetch you a new kimono and some food perhaps?”
Dumbfounded by his quickly changed demeanor and odd words she didn’t answer. “I shall call Abarine to help you dress. Please wait here.” Tanezane said getting up. The girl stiffened but he walked calmly out the sliding paper door. As soon as he was gone she scanned the room again in search of her swords. If they were there, they weren’t in view. She looked around, under the desk, in the closet. She purposely strayed from the ominous corpse. When that was the only place left she hesitantly, cautiously approached the coffin. She peered in. The swords weren’t inside unless they were underneath the body.
Not quite certain why, the girl examined what was in the box or who, to be precise. The body was as expected, pale but it’s hair had a lively shine in the candle light. It was ebony, like her own but with a bluish tint. The eyelids were dark. Looking closer she realized the chest was almost imperceptibly rising and falling. She stared incredulously as she remembered how cold it was to be trapped against it. She wasn’t ready to think of it as being alive. No person could be that cold and still be alive she was sure.
The sliding door opened to reveal a tall girl with foreign colored hair, the color of the sun, down past her shoulders and eyes like the sea. “Good morning.” She said conversationally. She didn’t reply. “I’ve brought you a clean kimono.” Her accent was nerve wracking. “My name is Avaline.” The foreigner went on, “Would you like me to help you dress or do you want to do it yourself?” The girl eyed her suspiciously. “Why am I here and how?” she asked. “You’re here because Master Johan saved you did he not? That’s why Tanezane and myself are here.” She seemed quite matter-o-fact and a little confused.
For the first time since she had awoken to this nightmare the girl gave some thought to what had been happening previously. The last thing she remembered before this was Ideyomu, her new husband, taking her away from the marriage festivities. She shivered distastefully at the thought. Then out of the ink painted night a shadow appeared before them and Ideyomu fell to the ground. After that nothing. She assumed she passed out or was struck hard enough to be rendered unconscious. She hoped for the latter, not that it mattered much to anything but her pride at this point.
“Attacked in my own home on my wedding night to be taken prisoner?” She laughed bitterly. “Did you wish to be with this husband then?” the taller girl asked interested. “I hardly see how that matters.” The samurai answered. “Avaline weren’t you ordered to dress her?” asked a stern voice form behind her. The smaller girl jumped and positioned herself as best she could defensively. The speaker was the dead man! “I’m sorry Master Johan.” The foreign girl apologized, bowing to him. He sighed and glanced at the girl in question. She had lifted the right shoulder of her ruined wedding kimono back in place earlier, as she was searching for her weapons so she didn’t feel quite as exposed.
“I apologize if I have ruined your wedding night.” He said with a smirk. His eyes held a mischievous light. Over her anger she noticed with shock that they were foreign, the color of the sky. She also realized that she recognized him! He had been visiting her daimyo lord’s estate and shown an interest in the details of her arranged marriage. She caught herself gaping and looked away. Johan laughed. “I take it you remember me.” He said. She glared at him. “You are an enemy of my master.” She hissed accusingly. “How so? If you truly wish to marry Mr. Ideyomu I won’t stop you. You can leave now if you wish…ah yes, your swords.” He remembered aloud when she didn’t turn and run. “Avaline.” To this point the woman had submissively staid quiet. “Yes Master Johan.” She said bowing and left the room.
Some how that left the samurai more wary. “You are annoyingly loyal to someone who treats you like a prisoner and a seal, Miss. Sora Rin.” The man said, all signs of false manners forgotten. “You know nothing of honor pond scum.” Rin spat. “Must run in the blood.” He allowed, “or maybe they had good reasons to elope.” The girl’s face was of shock. This new revelation shouldn’t have surprised her as much as it did but it was unexpected. Johan laughed bitterly.
The door slid open and both Avaline and Tanezane came in. Avaline held Rin’s swords. “Good evening Master Johan.” Tanezane greeted. Johan nodded. “May I inquire as to why you seem to be rather put out at the moment Sir?” the man went on. “Nothing of import Tanezane. Do not trouble yourself on my account.” Johan answered graciously. ‘How can he change so quickly? One minute he’s a gentleman and the next he’s a ruffian!’ Rin thought irritated.
“Are you hungry?” Tanezane asked her. She remembered him saying something about food before he left. At this point she was ready to do just about anything to get away from the smiling madman who was still sitting in the coffin. She also admitted, at least to herself, that she actually was quite hungry. She nodded. “Master Johan?” he asked. “No thank you.” “This way, my lady.” Tanezane said gesturing to the door. Avaline handed her the swords on her way out asking, “Would you like to change after you eat?” She could play this game too she decided. “If it won’t cause you any trouble.” Rin replied sweetly. Johan smirked behind her back.
Tanezane led her to a dining room. The low table was covered with plates of different foods. Surely they didn’t think one fifteen year old girl could eat that much food alone! She sat in the middle of the closest side and looked back at him… what was he to her? Prison guard? Servant? It didn’t really matter. “Will you be joining me?” she asked. “Oh no, my lady. Avaline and I have eaten already. I thank you for your invitation.” He bowed slightly. “In all honesty I can’t possibly eat all of this.” Rin protested. “That’s alright Miss. Rin.” Said Avaline joining them, “Whatever is left will be fed to the master’s pets.” “Pets?” Rin prompted. Avaline smiled at a secret joke, “Dogs.” “What kind of dogs? Are they big?” Rin asked. “Very big.” Tanezane replied amused, “Do you like dogs?” “I love most animals. The only ones I don’t like are snakes, bugs, and squids. Snakes bite, bugs ruin food, and squid tastes awful.” She replied seriously. Avaline suppressed a laugh. “Your food is getting cold.” Tanezane said clearing his throat. “I’m sorry.” Rin apologized turning back to the feast.
When she was done Avaline took her to a room filled with chests of various sizes. Rin wondered idly what they contained, quite certain she would never find out. Avaline opened a closet to reveal a vast amount of expensive clothing. “You may choose anything you like.” She said. Rin stared first at the closet and then at Avaline, who smiled back. “You’re serious.” Rin stated amazed. “I am. Master Johan will see you clothed, fed, and taken care of. You have no need for want here.” The older girl responded. “Why would he do this for me?” Rin asked suspiciously. Avaline’s voice dropped to a conspiratorial whisper “The only proper way to describe it is that he is a romantic. Tell no one of this though, for he denies it whole heartedly.” She smiled. Rin was dumbfounded. “You can’t be serious.” She insisted. “I am quite serious. Master Johan despises arranged marriages that do not consider the feelings of both parties. That is why both Tanezane and myself are here.” Avaline assured her.
“You ran away from your duty as a woman.” Rin accused. “I did.” She acknowledged, “However I did not run away from the duty to my heart.” “You would forsake all your parents hard work in raising a female child for your own selfishness?” the Japanese girl spat. “I was their child as much as they loved each other. I was a tool to gain business partners and bear children to a man I’d never met. If you were given the choice between an abusive king and a loving farmer who would you choose?” Avaline challenged. “The man that would most please my daimyo.” She answered. “If that were so I would feel sorry for you but you have been given the choice already to leave. If you believed the nonsense you have been spouting why are you still here?” Avaline asked. Rin couldn’t answer. “Now let’s get you into a new dress.” The foreigner continued selecting a kimono from the closet.
“I’ve run you a bath.” Avaline said. “Thank you.” Rin said absently as she entered the bathroom. She thought about what Avaline had said as she bathed. It bothered her to have no reason not to have left by now. She came up with a few excuses, such as her tattered clothing or lack of knowledge of her surroundings, none of which had actually crossed her mind up to this point. When she was done Avaline helped her dress. She looked into the three sided mirror in front of her. The new kimono was white with a red and yellow oak leaf pattern falling down the left side. The obi colors matched perfectly. “I wonder how much this was.” She accidentally thought aloud. “Quite a bit I’m sure.” Avaline answered, “Master Johan enjoys oak leaves. You’re finished.” Rin frowned at the thought of wearing something her captor would like.
“In exchange for ‘saving’ you, you become his servant. Is that it?” she asked to change the subject. “Heavens no.” Avaline protested leading her out of the room, “There have been many others that have come and gone. They found a partner or already had one and went to live with them. There are plenty of stories. Tanezane and I choose to stay and take care of Master Johan’s various estates. We are not forced.” They stopped at another room. “This is your room, should you choose to stay longer. I’m afraid it was put together quite hastily. We were under the impression that you would not be coming so soon.” She announced. Rin went in and was astounded. The room was a fair size, decorated lavishly with wall scrolls and various other frivolities. The furniture was intricately carved of polished oak, except of course for the cotton futon. Again she noticed the lack of windows and thought it odd. She was beginning to wonder exactly how much money this man possessed.
“Is it to your liking?” Tanezane asked from the doorway. “Yes.” She breathed, still looking around. Avaline smiled at him and asked “Have we been summoned?” “No, Master Johan said he will meet with Lady Sora tomorrow evening. I merely came to relay the message and to see how you were doing.” He assured them. She turned to Rin, “Is there anything you need?” Rin gave her a quizzical look, “No.” “The restroom is two doors to your left and if you need assistance knock on the door to your right.” Avaline instructed. “Is that your room?” Rin asked. “It is.” Tanezane answered. Realization dawned on her. Tanezane and Avaline were married! Come to think of it, Avaline never mentioned her last name. The couple smiled at her bewildered expression. “Are you really this surprised?” Tanezane asked amused. “I’m, I apologize!” Rin blurted flustered. Avaline laughed “Calm yourself. We take no offence.” Her reassurance did little to help Rin’s embarrassment.
After wishing her a good evening the Tanezanes went to bed. Rin still felt ashamed for being so oblivious. Now that she was alone she realized how quiet it was in the house or where ever she was. Cold shivers ran up her spine as fear gripped her. She wanted Avaline or Tanezane to be with her so she wouldn’t be alone but she would kill herself before she admitted to fear. Thinking that familiarizing herself with the peculiar house would rid her of this unwanted sensation she entered the hall. It was as empty and dark as it had been before, lit only by candle light, like the rest of the house. Within minutes she was lost. Angry with herself for ever leaving the room she continued down whichever hallway it was that she happened to be on.
“Lost already?” asked an amused voice. Rin jumped and slowly, angrily turned around. Johan wore an irritatingly smug smile. “I was taking a walk.” she said through clenched teeth, avoiding his query. His smile widened, “I see that. Where to, might I ask?” “Nowhere in particular.” She answered annoyed. “Well then, I see that I’m imposing. I’ll leave you to your walk then.” He said turning to leave. The thought of being lost and alone in the dark once again didn’t seem very inviting. “Wait.” She called and regretted it as soon as she said it. “Yes?” he asked with that ever present, annoying smile. “Why?” She demanded. He seemed amused, “What ever do you mean?” “You’re no fool, you know what I mean. Why am I here? What do you want from me?” she nearly yelled. Johan thought for a moment, “You’re here because you certainly did not want to be where you were and as for what I want… well, I have riches so I don’t need money or land from you and I have protection so I don’t need that from you either. I have everything I need… except a wife.” Another cold shiver traveled up her back. “You are here to help me find a wife.” he concluded.
Rin was dumbfounded. “I’m no matchmaker!” she yelled. “How many women have you met in your daimyo’s estate? How many have you met elsewhere? You are more capable than I to find myself a wife.” He stated. “Who would marry you?” Rin asked with venom. “Someone who beliefs it is her duty I suppose.” He answered with a sigh, turning to walk away, “Your room is the second door on the left down the next hallway. Oh, and by the way, I like your kimono.” Rin wanted nothing more than to hack him into pieces but sighing she went back to her room and laid down on the futon. “This can not be real.” she told the air.
The door opened slightly with a small groan of protest. Rin looked over to see a small, red puppy. It looked back cautiously. “Here puppy.” She called softly. It wagged its tail low and slowly crept closer until it was an arms length away. “Come on. I won’t hurt you.” Rin promised. The dog’s tail quickened it’s pace as it took a few more steps. When it was close enough Rin slowly reached out her hand and petted it. “Hello. What’s your name girl?” She asked searching for a collar. There was none. The dog sat next to her enjoying the attention. Eventually Rin fell asleep with the dog curled up next to her.

The next morning Rin woke to the sound of Avaline’s voice saying something in what must have been her native language. Rin assumed she was not pleased that the dog that had apparently stayed the night with her. She sat up rubbing her eyes, “It’s alright.” she paused to yawn, “I didn’t mind.” Finally she looked down to see a small girl with red hair curled up against her! “What?” she asked confused. “I apologize Lady Sora.” Avaline said in Japanese picking up the child. “Wait. Who is she? What happened to the dog?” “This wasn’t supposed to happen this way.” Avaline fretted, “This is Madison. Master Johan will discuss this with you later this evening.” “It’s ok that she was here. I don’t want to get her into trouble.” Rin insisted. Avaline gave her a half smile, “Yes well, Master Johan will meet with you after dinner tonight. Breakfast is ready if you’re hungry.” “Thanks.” Rin said confused by the older girl’s behavior.
After Avaline left with the mysterious little girl Rin got out of bed. The closet door was left ajar showing numerous articles of clothing. ‘This is why she was in here.’ Rin realized. She walked over and slid the door open. She was amazed at the array of colors and detailed prints. “They’re beautiful.” She said aloud. “They are.” agreed Avaline returning, “Why don’t you pick something today. As I recall I chose your kimono yesterday.” Rin returned her focus to the closet’s contents. Sheepishly she selected a blue, cloud print kimono with one blue and one white obi. “Today we have time to fix your hair also.” Avaline continued.
“Ah, Abarine-sama I’m just curious. Why do you call your husband by his last name?” Rin asked as the woman helped her dress. “You don’t have to call me ‘sama’ but to answer your question it’s a force of habit, I’m afraid. When I joined Master Johan, Tanezane was already here and that is the name I knew him by. Because I am Dutch I had no idea that it was his surname until later.” She explained, “I heard you asked Master Johan for a job last night. Does this mean you will be staying with us for awhile then?” Rin was not pleased to hear that the psychotic head of the house had passed off her demand for answers as ‘asking for a job’. “I asked for nothing. I suppose your ‘master’ was just giving me another ‘gift’. However I believe I will stick around for a bit.” She told her and silently added, ‘this place is more than it seems and I intend to find out why.’
After she was dressed Avaline put her hair up with blue decorative chopsticks. Rin thanked her as they headed to the dining area. “Good morning.” Tanezane greeted as they came in. “Good morning.” The girls greeted in return. “Did you sleep well Lady Sora?” he asked conversationally. “Very well, thank you.” She answered politely. “Here you are.” said Avaline placing plates of food on the table in front of them. They both thanked her as she joined them. “Itadakimasu.” They said in unison before they began to eat. Rin wondered where the girl from her room was and why she was not eating with them.
When they were finished Tanezane asked Rin if she would like a tour of the grounds. She agreed enthusiastically. They toured the entire house from top to bottom which must have taken hours. The house was much larger than Rin had guessed. Most of the rooms were either empty or full of clothes or furniture. “If you tire of seeing empty rooms, are you ready to go outside?” Tanezane asked with a knowing smile. Rin’s eyes lit up. He opened a door for her and they proceeded into the yard. Rin closed her eyes against the harsh rays of the sun, enjoying its warmth on her eyelids. Gradually her eyes adjusted and she opened them to see an enormous lawn surrounded by a dense forest.
There were only three buildings on the property, including the main house. A rather large servant house was to the far left behind the mansion. Rin looked to Tanezane. “Does anyone stay there?” she asked. She had only seen four people and a dog since she had come to this strange place. “Yes, that is where the ‘dogs’ stay.” He responded fighting a smile. Rin gave him an odd look. “You keep dogs in the servant house?” she inquired, confused. “They are quite spoiled, if I do say so myself.” Tanezane answered smiling. Rin decided not pursue the matter further, the sun was shining and she was much too happy to ponder the behavior of the older man.
The other building was a stable. It was located to the far right, opposite the servant house. Rin made her way over to see if any animals were being kept other than the dogs. When she entered she was amazed to find four beautiful horses and a milk cow. She slowly approached the first of the stalls. The big black horse smelled her hand. She patted him. “Hello… ” She paused to look for a name plate on the door. “Shuri-kun.” She visited the four other stalls in turn. Next to Shuri was a smaller brown horse with a blaze, named Tatara. The cow’s name was Hana. On the other side of the stable were Tupsa, a horse with socks on its back legs, that matched Avaline’s sun colored hair and a fire colored filly with four matching stockings and a star shaped like an oak leaf, without a name.
“She’s beautiful.” Rin said to Tanezane when she saw her. He was smiling. “She is.” He agreed. “Is there a reason she dose not have a name?” she asked. “She got here this morning.” He responded. “May I?” Rin asked motioning to the filly’s door. He nodded. Feeling more like a child than she would admit, she let herself into the stall. As soon as she was in, she never wanted to leave. She had been around horses all her life and felt more comfortable around them in this strange new place than in the sunless mansion her captor called his home.
Forcing herself to leave, she wandered around the yard a bit taking in the terrain. At some point she looked at the house long enough to realize that what had been bothering her inside was actually true. She ran all the way around the mansion to make sure the sun was not playing tricks on her eyes. The house had not one window anywhere on it. Tanezane, who had been sitting on a large rock smoking a thin Japanese pipe, watched her until she turned around the corner of the house and smiled.
When she came back on the opposite side she walked over to him. “Master Johan has a special condition which requires that he not have contact with sunlight.” He said in answer to her unspoken question. “Also, Abarine and I are not the only ones who have chosen to serve him to try to repay his kindness. This estate is usually cared for by a couple he saved from being separated by an arranged marriage. He is a very nice fellow if you get to know him.” He went on. Rin was getting the feeling that she somehow did not like Tanezane’s tone. She tried to ignore it.
Soon she was wandering the yard again. She still felt ill disposed toward her host, no matter how the Tanezanes tried to convince her otherwise. Finding a nice warm spot in the middle of the yard, Rin unsheathed her katana and began to practice her morning routine. Being a captive, willing or not, she was not about to let her skills weaken from disuse. Being captured was a great dishonor and she could not stand to worsen her daimyo’s name by becoming weak as well.
It had to have been quite a while but it felt much too soon when her guide said that they must return for noon meal. Rin resisted the urge to childishly pout and obediently followed Tanezane back into the amazingly large house. They silently followed the labyrinth of hallways to the dining room. On the way, Rin began to recognize some of the halls and even recall what lay behind a few of the different doors they had entered earlier. As they got closer to their destination the aroma of rice, chicken, and green tea welcomed them back.
“Good afternoon travelers.” Avaline joked as she finished setting the table. Tanezane smiled lovingly at his wife and took his seat. Rin sat in the seat she had picked the first time she had eaten at the table. It had become a subconscious habit. Avaline sat to her left. “Itadakimasu.”
“Did you enjoy being outside?” Avaline asked as they began to eat. “Very much.” Rin answered honestly. “I believe she was quite taken with the horses.” Tanezane prompted. “Really?” Avaline asked. “They are absolutely wondrous!” Rin exclaimed, “The flame horse is the most beautiful beast I have ever seen in my entire life!” Her companions smiled. “Who rides?” the girl asked quite interested. “Master Johan occasionally rides the stallion. The gelding belongs to Tanezane and the mare is mine.” Avaline answered. “Gochizosamadeshita.” Tanezane said before rising, “I have business to attend to now. Lady Rin, feel free to revisit any of the rooms but I must ask that you remain indoors for now. The dogs will be out and we wouldn’t want one of them to hurt you.”
Rin’s heart sank at the thought of being trapped inside the dark house again. She watched Avaline clean the table feeling numb, before offering to help with the dishes. The only thing she had left to look forward to was seeing the psychotic man who had brought her to this gloomy place. ‘Wonderful.’ She thought as she handed the last plate to Avaline. “Is there anything you would like to do now?” the older girl asked putting the plate away. Rin thought about all of the rooms she had visited earlier. “Could we go to the library?” she asked, suddenly in a considerably better mood.
“Of course.” Avaline agreed. The two girls made there way to the vast, old library in the middle of the house. “What would you like to read?” the Dutch woman asked browsing the shelves, “Lady Rin?” Rin stood in the center of the library looking around the room in astonishment, “It looks so much bigger from the inside.” “It does.” Avaline agreed, “Is there any particular book you would like to read?” “Do you have any archives for the house?” the Japanese girl asked, finally looking away from the seemingly endless shelves. “That’s a strange request.” Avaline giggled. “Is it so strange?” Rin asked herself, feeling a little self conscious.
“Here you are.” said Avaline as she handed Rin an armful of books and scrolls. “All of this for just this house?” she asked in amazement. “There are more if those are not to your liking.” Her foreign friend replied. “There are?” she asked incredulously. “The whole northern bookshelf is strictly for house archives.” Avaline assured her. Rin looked at the shelf reaching from one end of the room to the other, “Is Johan-kun a merchant?” “Master Johan is an artist.” Avaline corrected.
Rin let the thought sink in before speaking, “What does he paint?” Avaline smiled, “He paints life; trees, animals, and people.” “Does he keep any of his paintings?” Rin asked starting to get annoyed with the way the mansion’s tenants smiled. “Very few, I’m afraid. The pictures he does keep stay in his rooms.” the older girl answered. Trying to keep her curiosity at bay and not seem too nosey, the samurai picked a book from the pile she had been given. Finding a comfortable spot to sit, she started to read.
So engrossed was she, that she didn’t notice how long she had spent reading until Avaline called her name, “Lady Sora, I must prepare dinner. Will you be able to find your way to the dining room when the meal is ready?” Rin mentally ran the hallways between the library and dining room. Fairly confidently she answered that she could and watched the older girl leave.
She burned with questions, that for now at least, would remain unanswered. After a time she resumed her reading but with notably more effort at concentration than before. It didn’t take long before she was staring at the ceiling, lost in the never ending torrent of her thoughts. Her mind wandered from the mansion and its mysterious inhabitants to her home. She thought of her daimyo and of her new husband. She wondered if they were angry with her for being captured. Surely her daimyo would be angry at her inferiority and incompetence but she wondered idly if he was angrier with her, her husband who should have been more able, as a man, to fight, his guard who are his protection, or Johan who had betrayed him. She decided pointedly it would be Johan, nothing was worse than a traitor.
