Call me a disturbing freak, but I wasn't too surprised with the ending scenes. If you watch Higurashi, this end is really nothing compared to it.

Higurashi is at last another gerne with a far better plot. Higurashi will be scary and disturbing at the first sight(just like Elfen Lied they used the strong antagonism between cute and scary)and you won't understand the plot, if you just don't reconsider about the events.
(You will get the answers what really happened at the end of season 1 and season 2 but the anime doesn't cover it all)

But some scenes should question the viewer because there are contradictions. Thinking about the contradictions gives the viewer another focus on events.(You will get around 1/3-50% of the plot if you do so )
So at first sight the Horror factor is far bigger then Psychological factor and after reconsidering the events the facters gonna change.

You can't compare Higurashi with School Days, since School Days should be compared with a Love Story(with a triangle), a drama etc.

The same goes for Gantz.

But you can compare Higurashi with Gantz since Horror is a sub-gerne of Gantz.

But you can compare scenes from Gantz and Higurashi to the ending of School Days.
In that case Gantz got only cruel 1 scene(Onion kid)since it's more action based.
And Higurashi got many more cruel scenes.

But those scenes got a far stronger impact then School Days.

I wouldn't say that School Days is gruesome. Replace gruesome with terrible(or with the meaning of terrible since some languages can translate both words to a word with different meanings)
At the second half the plot is ruined by an unrealistic behaviour of Makoto.(The plot becomes like a zeroplot from a hentai)
It would be a far better anime if it stayed a love triangle, with a similar ending.

The ending was shocking but the effect wasn't really strong since it was too predictable, it was wished by 90%+ of the audience that Makoto dies etc.

it doesn't become gruesome until the last episode. though it is somewhat gruesome in the end, you would never see it coming.

What else could have happen? The second half ruined the plot so the it became a one way ticket to the "Bad ending"
1. Makoto dies.(Killed of course)
2. Makoto + Sekai die(like this ending, without the labil personallity of Kotonoha she also could have killed both.)
3. Makoto + Kotonoha dies (-Sekai kills both)
4. All die(Makoto+ current girlfriend killed the castoff commits suicide)
5. The 2 girls die(current girlfriend killed the castoff commits suicide because she can't gain his "love" anymore)
6. The Castoff commits suicide (because she can't gain his "love" anymore) couple breaks up/stays.
7. Nearly impossible "Good ending" without getting anyone killed.
8. "Bad Ending" without getting one killed

Even just the possibilities leave a chance of 12,5% to a good ending.

A simple triangle and a smarter not hormon controlled Makoto could open far more possible better matching endings and even good ones.
Makoto could have been killed/commits suicide for undecisiveness.
Unrealistic Harem ending like some other triangle stories.
Makoto decides for a girlfriend.
etc.

Just compare School Days to Kimi ga Nozumo eien.
You will see that KGNE is far more realistic and the ending is even more matching(even you don't like it) then the ending of School Days, which make KGNE a better anime, since the plot isn't ruined(but it's really depressing)

Edit:

Narutaru is gruesome.

Naru Taru has been changed compared to the manga, because they aired it at "Kidz Station" (really a Seinen ends up with Kodomo animes....[and therefore critics since the changes haven't been enough/strong enough])
The manga got more perverted and cruel dialogs and the scenes are more explicit.(Well some dialogs stayed the same like: "Riding on a moped and spreading the legs is dirty....." "But you girls are riding horses.....", but how coldhearted some characters are hasn't been shown(and one part of the main plot has been left out) ...."

For example the mobbing/revenge of Shiina's girlfriend doesn't have got a such strong effect like it was possible.(Even though it was more then apparent what happened because the dialogs haven't been changed enough.)

The anime also didn't continue after the time skip because they couldn't weaken the scenes which happen there like torturing a support character to death after he has been raped, another rapescene, the suffering by radiation of a support character and the massacres at the end etc.
Some of those scenes would have got a lvl of cruelitiy same as Higurashi.

Actually is not that its violent its the psycological outcome that we see they breakdown killing each otehr just for jelaousy wich it is in my opinion the most and wost feeling on human beings in other stuff like elfen laid and higurashi its just cause they are alredy crazy here the feeling they had made em act like that so its like more realistic in a exceeding way to finish stuff. Here every1 was guilty. Makoto for letting his d??ck do the talk and the girls for going and give it to him. The one i think was the lucid of the series was the girl that went ro france or w/e

Yeah, School Days is far from "gruesome" when compared to many other animes like Gantz and such. On a psychological level it's very disturbing and sickening (If your the type that gets involved mentally with the characters) but gruesome, no.

I agree, it's not really that bad. Just as some people have said before, it's disturbing, but not THAT horrible as it is claimed to be.

Well, I have watched more gruesome animes like Elfen Lied and Higurashi; and compared to School Days it's way more gruesome. Though in School Days it is kinda bloody at the end but it's not too bad.
Posted 7/25/08
short answer: no

other anime are far more gruesome (higurashi is a good example), the end is simply very disturbing which is different. It just comes suddenly and outside what you would expect from the series. Under the realistic tone established previously it becomes a very disturbing ending.

it was simply different i think it was sad but it was good how they changed the ending to somewhat distrubing and gruesome because in the beginning it was all happy personal i liked the whole twist at the end

..Higurashi doesn't have as much love as School days...Well Higurashi is a story of killing in an village and it's normal that an story that's about killing has blood in it...But School days was a story about love....In the beginning there wasn't any blood....In the middle there wasn't any blood in the end....There was more emotions in the air than in higurashi and there was the same amount of blood than in a killing scene in Higurashi....

Although the ending of school days was really quite unreal...Well it might be real when that girl only loved the main guy a little.....And the girl thought that she loved the guy more than the girl the guy loves.....So she thought that when she who loves him more doesn't get him than she who doesn't love him as much as her than it would be better if he died...But still it is kinda crazy girl.....Killing a guy she loves....

P.S:I don't really remember their names.....

Well "gruesome" isn't the word synonymous with School days. It's not the severity of what was actually done, more than a WTF?! aspect.
Higurashi was more gruesome, per se, but it was expected.
School days was definitely more just unexpected and scary because of how normal the characters seemed before hand.
