Absolutely love Rhapsody
I did not like Triumph or Agony that much though, and their lyrics are not what I like about them, the guitar and the virtuosity of their instrumental work is absolutely amazing.

As far as Rhapsody being the first of their kind, I'd probably give Blind Guardian the nod before I would Rhapsody. Blind Guardian formed in 1984 and started doing heavily fantasy inspired power metal, though Rhapsody would build on that and make their own distinctive sound from it.

I've listened to a fair amount of Rhapsody. I'd call myself a casual fan. I made a Rhapsody mix CD of my tracks and called "Behold the Power of Cheese." Sometimes I like the over the top image the band has, other times it can get on my nerves.

Their music can be rather hit or miss with me. Some of it is awesome, most pretty good, but every now and then it's just downright laugh out loud cheesy (i.e. Forest of Unicorns). Their videos are terrible and they used to infamous for their promo photos (I remember one had them all huddled around a fake dwarf like creature... I tried to find it but I think the Rhapsody fans have buried it). Overall good band.

EDIT: Found it! This is the biggest I could find though :(

I was first introduced to Rhapsody of Fire last summer when I was with Legacy of Steel; I myself find that it is harder for me to like Rhapsody when, often times, it sounds like a film score.

I know that is a very poor knock against them, and that they are very talented individuals, but the whole "Extremely freaking epic" thing bothers me at times. I would much rather listen to something like Dragonland, even though they are also guilty of it sometimes. Symphony X, though, for me, is the creme de la creme of it all, for me, since they combine so many other styles into their music.

And Azrael is correct, I'd give the title of "first" to Blind Guardian or maybe even Stratovarius (but I think Stratovarius was a little later than Blind Guardian).

Well I'm definitely not as well versed in this genre compared to anyone else in this thread but I listened to the clips provided by jay and I enjoyed them. The symphonic metal sounds strike a chord with me being a ex-orchestra member. There melodies are extremely clean and the arrangements sound top-notch.

Vocals were alright. A little too gruff for my tastes but all and all really good. Thanks for introducing these guys to me. New stuff for my playlist! hells yeah.
