I also read in a forum that after Shin graduates from Shirokin (in the manga) he manages to save her again and tries to kiss her. Unfortunately, it was interrupted!

In the drama version, Sawada Shin gives Yankumi long, (dare I say it!) loving looks when she is not watching. This is evident in the episode where they caught the arcade manager mugging people, whom they thought was Uchiyama. While Shinohara was presenting the certificate, he was looking at her getting all excited. He is happy when she is happy. In another Episode, where the school nurse's son visits, Sawada Shin gets this look when Yuta (the son) runs to the three girls calling "Mama". It's like he doesn't want Yankumi to be the mom of the little boy. During the confrontation between the students and the head teacher, Sawada Shin also said that he can open his heart to his teachers...this may seem like a stretch but I'm hoping he was implying somthing here. In the end of the drama, when Shinohara tells Tetsu that he won't give up on her, and Tetsu agrees, the other cop also says he likes her and Sawada Shin says to count him in. Yankumi drama version does not show any romantic interest in Sawada Shin at all.

The manga's special chapter concludes with them kissing.
