Afterlife is pointless
Posted 8/9/08
i agree if there's an afterlife what is the point of this life..i don't think that it makes sense
Posted 8/12/08
It isn't pointles and it is so true...but believe what you want..it's hard to convince people nowadays...they want more and more proof instead of having faith...so I won't bother explaining why it is true....

All I see is a person who is taking things too literally. As whoever it was on the first page me said, you havent experienced these facts...

I agree that when you place these ideas in the categories that you have placing them in, you make them sound undesirable, as well as pointless.

Neither me, nor you, nor anyone here can truly grasp these concepts.

The point of this life is to reach the next through good deeds and such. Once you get there, you've completed your life's mission, what is there left to do? :S

I have a question for you. Sorry I feel like playing Devil's Advocate

If you completing good deeds is you life mission, and you get to the after-life what is the point, what is next?

(I think I fully understand what the guy meant by his first post.)

I think that I'm more worried on the now in this life since there still are lots of things that I want to accomplish...

And whenever I do die then I will worry about the afterlife, what gods truly exist, if there is an actual heaven or hell, or if we reincarnate, or if we fade into nothingness, all that should just be left alone until we die

^ Exactly my thoughts.

If theres no afterlife, then whatever we're doing now is worthless.

Ever view Diane Keaton's documentary on Heaven? Absolutely brain fucking, anyone who has ever questioned heaven's existence with an agnostic standing point would adore this film. Of course, it answers no questions, after all, those in the documentary are, or possibly were, alive, therefore making any testifications worth shit.

I wrote an essay shortly after viewing the documentary on the commentaries from the hopefuls. Something along the lines of humans dragging along their earthly sins into a supposedly pure heaven, thus tainting the purity of heaven's atmosphere and forcing god to regulate the afterlife more severely since that is his neck of the woods. I then imagine god placing soma dispensers about the place to keep us in line like A. Huxley's "Brave New World". Watching the film also made me realize just how passionately and obediently humans are willing to throw themselves up for comforting thoughts. An ecstasy of religious affairs -- the strongest tablet there is.

Would you believe me if I said there was a purple elephant roaming about my backyard? What if I said you couldn't see it, unless it decided to show itself to you? And that it would only show itself to you if and only if you believed in it with the honesty of your virgin heart?
Does that sound convincing or a bit farfetched?
Perhaps if we sweeten the deal a bit and say that if you believed in the purple elephant roaming about my backyard, you will receive an unlimited amount of delicious ice cream? Would you start believing in my verbal claim, or would you call me crazy?
How about if you don't believe in it, you will be forced to eat dirt for the rest of your life?

That documentary sounds really interesting. That essay sounds pretty interesting. I'm surprised such a thought has never occurred to me. Soma dispensers in heaven, feel the irony!

Looking at your post, a more interesting debate than the chicken and the egg would be, what came first, the carrot and the stick, or the concept of heaven and hell..

I just consider death very frightening because we can never understand what happens when we die. We will never know when, where, why or how we are gonna die either... me might get killed by someone, hit by a vehicle. organ failure, or hopefully from old age. all we can do is wait for are deaths to come.

The following statement by science hero and very smart guy, Albert Einstein, mirrors my belief about this:

A man's ethical behavior should be based effectually on sympathy, education, and social ties and needs; no religious basis is necessary. Man would indeed be in a poor way if he had to be restrained by fear of punishment and hopes of reward after death.

It depends on which afterlife you're expecting.

For the part about reincarnation, read Nietzsche's approach to it.

As much as I admire him that was pretty dumb IMO.

o_o An apology? Amazing! There is hope in the forums. :)

As for your question, homosexuality can be seen as a moral offense without the Bible. The way I see it, homosexuality is not natural in the sense that reproduction is impossible between the same sex. So you could say that it is morally wrong because it goes against nature? Bleh, maybe someone else could give a better explaination, but we should stay on topic.

This drips with ignorance. Many species in nature have homosexual relations and there are a number of theories that explain that even if it does not lead to procreation it serves other evolutionary purposed. Homosexuality is natural.
