This was explained by Zura:

Gintoki was an orphan at a young age.

He went to a small temple school with Sakamoto, Takasugi and I. It was run by a revolutionary named Yoshida Shouyou who disliked the subjugation of the will of the Samurai. He learned the way of Bushido from Shouyou-sensei.(ep 61)

Shouyou-sensei being the closest thing to a parent/guardian to Gintoki, he was very fond of Sensei like the rest of us.

What you don't know was that Shouyou-sensei was put under 〇〇〇〇 by the 〇〇〇〇〇 which did not permit him to leave the school or the village because he was the leader of the movement of Joi Shishi. So Sensei raised us to act as carriers of his will to bring forth the Sonno Joi on his behalf. As his only eyes and ears outside of our villiage in we fought on in the Amanto War. Not knowing the tragedy that would befall him.

Then after the long stages of the all out battle, Gintoki and I fought side by side and in the conflict Shouyou-sensei was killed by 〇〇〇〇. In despair at losing most of his comrades and losing his only adult guardian/father figure Gintoki disappeared from the conflict leaving me in despair to fight an endless war until I was, presumably by his thoughts, dead. Luckily I wasn't and found him later but that's another story.

Gintoki faced great hardships after leaving the conflict. With nowhere to go, no family, and not even a sword, a friend, or bushido to guide him Gintoki drifted endlessly looking for a place to live with dignity never to be found. As a samurai, and as a human, those were already two strikes against him so he fell deep into poverty and desolation.

The next time we see Gintoki he is dying of starvation in a graveyard living off of scraps of food when he encounters Otose who takes pity on the young drifter. He then lives in her home as a bodyguard and builds the Yorozuya realizing that to make a living as a human in these times, you have to be willing to do anything. That's how he started the Yorozuya. Then the rest of the story should be relatively familiar.

That's all that I can tell you. For the rest just ask Gintoki.

Well that was it.
Class dismissed.
I'm going to locate the Mu continent and enter its mysterious domain.
Afterall, a respectable sensei should conduct researches as well.

I'll tell you about the Mu Contintent next time.

The Mu continent doesn't exist even in the Gintama world. Do you even have a PhD. in history?

And I believe YOUR existence is absurd gorilla.
Evaporate and leave no sign of yours back in this world.
Go back to your stalking class.
I'm getting a nap.
