Well, I don't know about America [ahaha even though I live there], but in Asia, most people smoke anyway. So it shouldn't be too difficult to find someone to play the part and smoke.

My dad once told me in some Hong Kong film, that they don't actually smoke. Like, it's fake or something. But I woudn't know.

I know that in jdramas, a lot of the people who are smoking do it for real. I hate how they make smoking seem glamorous.

Unfortunately this phenomenon happens also in real life..at least in Italy..
Probably who smokes in movie smokes also in life...The act surely would be more natural like that..

I saw people on screen smoking. Like, for HK dramas(like...YEARS ago. i still watch them though) Umm...my mom said that they fake smoke. They suck it in, but before they can even put it down their throat, it's already out. But....some are REAL smokers, so its not a problem for them to REALLY smoke. But my mom has a point there.

As for what i think, it dosen't matter for me if it's real or not. If i see an actor/actress smoking in any kind of situation, it's gross for me and i usually don't watch anymore stuff from that person... for example, Yamapi... whom i absolutly loved as far as Nobuta Wo Produce... but once i saw clips for Byakkotay i got gross ou... and then i saw Kurosagi, just because Maki Horikita was there.

hmmm.. idk I guess it depends more on like how much they actually smoke on screen, 'cause thats when you can really tell if they're faking or really smoking.. right?

I've always wondered about that too! Do they really smoke on screen or it just a prop?

The writers and directors decide what a character does not the actor. I think its silly that you hold it against the actors and decide not to watch them anymore. I also don't like smoking but I know if an actor did smoke that its their business and as long as they were acting really well, I could care less. Yamapi is an awesome actor and it would be a shame if you missed out on all the great dramas because he was smoking in some.

why do some people discriminate against smoking?
like, duh? grow up.
people smoke because they want to,
if u don't like it,
get off their case.

don't go like
"eew, its disgusting" or "i hate smokers"

just give it a rest.
please

respect us smokers.
