Mari darted next to Reina and bumped her aside with her hip. "They're here to get pictures of me, obviously." Mari retorted as she began to make exaggerated poses, flicking her hair in Reina's direction.

Yossie had made a joke about how we've been since we got married, referring to our wedding in the Cinderella musical 3 years back. I panicked for a second, dreading what Ai's reaction would be, but she took it in stride, commenting that marriage life was hectic. Surprised, I smiled at this, which she returned in kind. Then tension between us dissolved a bit, and we finished our meal in a pleasant atmosphere.

Awww this a typicall Yossy thing to do!! More Yossy pls.... and were are the rest of the momuses??

Chapter 4

Dinner had left me in a pleasant mood as I made my way towards the beach. The moon was high into the sky at this point, bathing everything below with a silvery radiance.

Shrieks, squeals, and laughter could be heard further down the beach. Turning to look in that direction, I noticed Yossie terrorizing Mari and Rika with a small crab. Grinning, I couldn't help but to laugh at the situation. A small bonfire had been started, and the two girls darted around it while attempting to flee from the pincers. Mari practically crawled up Kei in an attempt to escape. Miki was clutching her side from laughter as Rika used her as a shield. Shaking my head, I felt my spirits rise even further from the spectacle.

Glancing past them, I noticed the remaining members scattered from the beach to the pool, with some having retired early. Ai had disappeared after dinner was over, but I wasn't concerned. I was certain she'd join the rest of us before long. Returning my attention to the ocean, I claimed a spot of sand as my own before sitting down. Slipping off my sandals, I buried my feet in the sand, smiling slightly at the odd feeling. Placing my arms behind me, I leaned back to look up at the night sky, finding the stars to be memorizing. Back in Japan, the city lights always blocked so many from view, but out here... Breath-taking could be the only way to describe it.

As my eyes scanned the rich night canvas, my mind began to drift off to other matters. Eight years of my life had been spent in Morning Musume. I laughed, cried, overcame obstacles, and so much more with its members. We were all close, but something was different about my relationship with Ai. But was it different? Really? Was my friendship with her any different than with Eri, or any of the other girls for that matter? Yes, and no, I decided.

I was the closest with Ai, but that wasn't it. Our friendship hadn't changed, I did. She started to become more than just a friend to me, and I wasn't sure how to go about that. I had never experienced such feelings before, and to honest, it scared me somewhat. It wasn't normal to have such feelings for another girl, much less one you consider your best friend. I kept these things to myself, and went about our days like any good friends.

After our graduation, when we started to hardly see one another, those dormant emotions hit me stronger than ever.

I should tell her.

It's unfair that she doesn't know.

I can't...

In the end, I was too afraid to say anything. What if she took it badly? What if it pushed her away even further than what her job was doing to us? I dreaded experiencing any of those, and once more kept things to myself. As time went on, I tried to forget about it, claiming that we all went so long without a boyfriend, why was something with a female instead bothering me so? I found many men to be attractive, but I had yet to form an emotional bond with one, or even date one for that matter. Ai on the other hand, had been my best friend for almost 10 years now. We knew one another inside and out. I knew that was what was troubling me.

Could two years of separation ruin a ten year friendship?

We had both changed in our own ways as we grew older, and our careers took different paths. But deep down, I was still Risa wasn't I? She was still Ai? I had to firmly believe this if I had any chance of reconnecting with her again on that previous level.

The sound of cloth brushing sand suddenly broke my train my thought.

Glancing to my right, I saw her sitting next to me. Ai wore a peaceful expression as she watched the waves lap at the sand not far from our feet. She was simply stunning with the moonlight glowing down upon her. My eyes followed her jawline until it curved up into her mouth, which currently held a light smile. Ai looked over at me then, her brown eyes hidden by the shadows of night.

"It's beautiful," she said simply, as she returned her gaze to the churning water.

"You are," I replied, my tone full of agreement until I realized what I had just said.

I mentally kicked myself the split second after.

"Eh?" she questioned, her eyes gazing at me once more.

"The ocean, you're right, it's beautiful." I rushed out, my voice raising slightly in pitch.

"Ah.."

She didn't comment further, although she did continue to watch me. Her eyes slowly scanned my face, stopping at various points. It felt as it she were trying to draw a mental picture of me inside her mind.

After several moments of this, I reached out to poke her forehead. "Didn't you tell me something about taking a picture earlier?" I teased, causing her to blush this time in embarrassment.

"I remember something along those lines," she replied, her smile still intact as she brushed away the bits of sand my finger placed.

We sat in silence afterward, simply enjoying each others company.

After a good while of this, I titled my head towards her. "I've missed you."

She didn't say anything at first, but I noticed the slight creasing of her eyes.

"I've missed you too," she replied, a swirl of emotions clinging to the words.

Instead of looking at me, she glanced up at the moon. The soft light bathed her face, allowing me to see her eyes. They appeared to be wet. Was she beginning to cry?

Confused, I reached out to comfort her. She looked at me then, causing my hand to freeze before I reached her arm. Having it fall back to the sand, I watched her instead, unsure of what to do.

"I've been a terrible friend. Rarely seeing any of you like this." she said suddenly, making me realize why she appeared to be upset now.

"You've never been an awful friend, Ai-chan. Don't think that." I meant what I said, and this time I did clasp her arm, my hand giving it a comforting squeeze.

She smiled a little and sniffled, looking embarrassed.

I was about to give her a pep talk when a water balloon was suddenly smacked into my shoulder, spraying the two of us with water. Yelling out in surprise, I would have fell over in the sand if it wasn't for my grip on Ai. She looked as startled as I did. Laughter and hollering could be heard from behind, drawing our attention towards it.

Aibon, Makoto, and Konkon stood there, mischievous grins plastered to their faces. They looked ready to launch more when Aika and Koharu attacked from the side, drawing surprised shrieks from the girls. Yossie darted by with a large water gun, hosing down all of us. Mari was firm on her trail, throwing balloons left and right that landed no where near her target.

"You and Mr. crab are going to get it!" she yelled, as she rallied the other girls to chase after Yossie.

Gawking, I couldn't believe what was going on, and more importantly, what they had just interrupted.

Ai began to giggle as she watched though, which in turned caused me to relax.

"We should go help," she commented, already beginning to stand up.

Grinning slightly now, I watched Yossie jump over the low bushes surrounding the outside area of the pool.

"Mm, revenge!" we were both laughing now as we ran to catch up.

Chapter 5

The water fight had lasted well into the night, leaving everyone thoroughly drenched. My sides still hurt from laughing so much. Mari had slipped at one point, knocking both her and Rika into the pool. Needless to say, Rika-chan wasn't too pleased. I still giggled at the thought as Ai and I made our way down the hall to our room.

"That was fun," I commented, my gaze turning towards her as she looked my way.

She smiled at me and nodded, her brown eyes warm.

I was tempted to clasp her hand then as we walked side by side, the wet skin of our fingers having already grazed from the close walk. I refrained though, still feeling a piece of that awkward barrier intact.

Making it to our room, I slipped in the key card and was rewarded with a satisfying click. Pushing the door open, I held it for Ai to follow behind and then shut it, my back pressing against the wood.

"I'm worn out. I think we ran a good couple miles just chasing Yossie around," I joked, my head slumping back as I gave an exaggerated pose of exhaust.

Ai gave a small laugh, her eyes studying me once more. The dark orbs roamed over my face, seeming to linger where the damp strands of hair clung to the side of my face. She was beginning to wear that troubled expression again, as if she were torn between two things, and was afraid of both. My breathing began to quicken on its on accord as she drew closer, her eyes still studying the details of my existence. A small bead of water dripped from my damp hair, causing it to slide in a lazy pattern across my skin until it reached my chin. There it clung for dear life, losing its grip little by little until it would meet its demise in my shirt collar. Before it could reach it's untimely end, Ai reached forward, her finger sliding up the curve of my chin to remove the moisture.

I froze then, my breathing becoming pent up inside my chest.

She was very close now, her one finger sliding from my chin to my jawline until it reached my ear. Her hand opened then to gently cup the side of my face. I instinctively turned into it, finding her skin to contain the lingering scent of sweet flowers and tangy salt water. It was an exotic combination that unlocked the frozen breath in my lungs. A flicker of emotions crossed her face as she watched my reaction to her hand. Fear? Concern? Joy...? I was at a loss towards the turmoil in her eyes that was now showing. Pulling away suddenly, she adverted her gaze.

"It's getting late." she said quietly, before turning from me to retrieve her night clothes and disappear into the bathroom.

I remained at the door, unsure about how I should feel. I couldn't deny that I was hurt by her quick dismissal, but I was confused more than anything.

***

I awoke late the next morning, having not been able to get much sleep the night before. Laying there still, I glanced over at Ai's bed. The bed had been made, and she was no where in sight. Sighing against my pillow, I rolled over to look up at the ceiling. Things had gone so well yesterday. The beach fight with the other girls had strengthened our frayed bond, and yet it seemed we were back to square one. Rubbing at my eyes, I sat up and reached for the black remote resting on top of the desk between our beds. Turning on the TV, I began to flip through the channels until I came across a drama. Even though they were speaking English, I managed to understand some of the phrases, and could figure out what was going on based on the actors.

One particular scene had a young man and woman talking quickly. They kept glancing around as if they were fearing to be caught any second. The man reached forward to kiss the woman, but he was slapped away, the woman looking distressed before running off.

"I know how you feel," I said glumly, my chin being supported by my palm as I watched his face contort to reflect his inner feelings.

I continued to watch a bit more before flipping the channel again. An hour quickly went by in this fashion until I realized the time. It was getting close to 10am, and I decided it was better for me to get dressed, than stay a bum in bed all day, despite how welcoming that sounded right now.

Changing, I pulled on a red and blue strapped shirt with a simple pair of jean shorts and sandals. Tying my hair back, I made sure everything was in place before exiting the room.

"Risa-chan! There you are!" Eri called further down the hall.

Waving, I walked up to meet her and Reina.

"You missed breakfast. We ate with Ai-chan and Mako-chan. I asked about you, but Ai-chan said you were still alseep." she commented, her face giving a slight pout.

Looking embarrassed, and feeling crummy that I had missed eating with them, I gave her an apologetic smile. "I'm sorry about that. I didn't sleep well at all last night."

Reina raised her eyebrows slightly, as if she were trying to piece together all the possible reasons for such a thing during a beautiful vacation. Eri on the other hand was giving me a questioning look, but didn't press it.

"Since you're up now, you should go to the beach with all of us. The hotel is lending us jet skis, and Mari and Yossie keep going on about who can build the better sand castle." she replied, looking a bit sheepish at the last part.

"Sand castle?" I said, my lips twitching with the hint of a smile.

"Mm, although I think one of them will just end up buried in the sand by the other." Reina replied, offering a crooked smile at the mental image it induced.

Grinning now, I let my past worries melt away for the moment as we headed for the beach.

***

The group of us had split into two camps. Team Mari, which consisted of: me, Reina, Eri, Koharu, Junjun, Linlin, and Konkon, and Team Yossie, who consisted of: Ai, Miki, Mako, Rika, Sayu, Aibon, and Nono. The rest of the girls were spread out on their beach towels, attempting to soak up the sun and vaguely watch us.

Standing proudly in front of her team, who all made her look even smaller, Mari stabbed her finger in Yossie's direction.

"You're going down!" she yelled, while attempting to puff out her chest in an intimidating manner.

Snickers could be heard from the other side, as Yossie smiled, and waved for her to bring it.

Sand buckets were ran to the ocean front and then brought back to the pile of sand we had amassed together. This vaguely made me think of an American show I had watched on TV earlier. Shaking my head, I began to mix the two together to form a compact substance. For a while it looked like we were winning, until Yossie's side started fling gloppy balls of sand at us. One such ball hit my arm, causing me to crush in one of our towers.

Looking over, I noticed Ai grinning in my direction.

Oh, so she wanted to play like that.

Giving her a sickly sweet smile in return, I turned my back and began to form several small balls of sand. Pulling Mari aside, who had been busy trash talking, I whispered to her my plan. A wicked grin claimed her face as she began to load up on the sand. With her hands behind her back, she stepped up to the stick dragged mark that separated our teams.

Her grin was gone, replaced by a pleasant expression.

"I'd like to call a truce so we can finish our castle." she offered, her gaze directed towards Yossie, her regarded her with a cocked eyebrow.

"And if we say no?" The taller leader replied.

"Well th-" she started, but was unable to finish before being pelted by Rika and Miki.

"No truce!" The pair called, effectively knocking Mari to the ground.

Mangled curses escaped her mouth before she began to shout, "Leader down! Leader down! Ahhgh!"

I was torn between cracking up and helping her. The latter wasn't an option as Yossie's team descended on us. What had started as a castle building competition had quickly turned into a low budget war movie. Balls of sand were slung at us in what felt like a slow motion fashion, as one by one we fell to the beach.

Ai was the one to claim me as I fell to the ground. Towering over me, she wore an affectionate grin before extending her hand to help me up. Grasping her hand, I yanked her down with me, laughing at the surprised squeak she gave. We soon became a tangle of limbs as she attempted to detach herself from me. Pushing upward, her body now hovered above mine, her legs straddling my waist.

Her face was much closer this time, and once again I felt that burning sensation spread along my skin.

"You lost," she whispered, causing my body to shiver against her.

I would have replied if my brain was able to function at the moment.

Rolling off me, she ran towards her team as they gave each other high-fives for winning.

Sitting up, I simply stared after her. Wow.

My daydreaming was interrupted by Mari who stalked over to us. "Listen up, we're getting them back tonight. I have a plan..." she said, her hands rubbing together deviously.

Why did I have the feeling that this was going to backfire on us?

Chapter 6

The rivalry continued through out the day until I thought I'd never get the sand out of my hair. My sides were also sore from laughing so much. I was amazed at the situations we could get ourselves into.

At one point while we were playing in the ocean, Yossie had yelled that there was a shark which earned her several screams as we tried to slosh through the water as quickly as possible. Once we made it to the beach, we noticed the ex leader hunched over from laughing so hard. We had a momentary truce as both teams banded together to wreck havoc upon Yossie once again. Mari seemed to particular enjoy this part, much to my amusement.

Several hours were spent in this manner until the sun began to set.

Sitting stretched out on a beach towel, I watched the sun slowly dip into the ocean. I had seen this several times before on our previous Hawaii trips, but the beauty of it left me in awe each time. There was a quiet, peaceful presence the sunsets here held, an unattainable quality that I wasn't able to find in Japan. Turning to check on the others, I noticed Ai making her way towards me, a smile lighting up her features when she caught my gaze.

Plopping down next to me, she brushed some speckles of sand from my face before turning to watch the sunset. Her fingerprints burned into my skin as I kept my eyes on her for a moment, noticing how the subdued golden rays highlighted her skin and hair, making her look even more stunning. I ached to tell her how absolutely beautiful she was, but how random would that be?

Hey, Ai! I think you're hot~ Denied.

I was just kind of gawking at you, and wanted to say how lovely you are~ I think I cringed mentally at this one.

Letting out a deep breath, I decided to save the awkward compliment for later, and just enjoy her company. The exhale of breath had apparently not gone unnoticed, because she looked at me then, her eyebrows quirked up into a questioning expression.

Smiling at her I waved dismissively, but that didn't seem good enough for her, as she peered at me closely, drawing closer.

"What's wrong?" she asked quietly, the concern lowering her tone.

Nothing, except I have feelings for you that go way beyond friends. Wouldn't it have been easier if I could just say that? Cut to the point and let her know what was wrong.

Shaking my head, I tried to keep my expression pleasant.

"Really, I'm fine."

She began to frown then, her eyebrows furrowing together as she regarded me with an unpleasant expression.

Was she getting... mad at me? Maybe not mad, but I could see disappointment beginning to form on those delicate features.

"You're lying," she stated firmly, catching me off guard.

I hadn't expected her to be blunt like that, and was at a loss for words.

"I've known you long enough to know when you're lying, or at least trying to keep something from me. You've been acting oddly since before the plane ride." she accused, although her tone wasn't harsh, just somewhat hurt.

"Have I?" I questioned, although I said this more to myself than actually expecting her to confirm the obvious.

She nodded, and continued to watch me, her gaze piercing into my very being.

Could I tell her?

No.

Could I keep avoiding the subject?

No.

But I'd sure try.

"You've been acting odd as well, Ai-chan." I shot back, realizing that I hadn't actually thought on this much.

Sure there had been some questionable moments, but I had been too absorbed into keeping my problem secret from Ai to examine her reactions as well. In the bedroom last night, when she had touched my face, she did look torn between keeping her hand there and quickly pulling away. What did that mean? Was she having the same internal conflict?

That couldn't be.

...could it?

She had yet to reply to my question, and instead of responding she turned her gaze back towards the sunset.

An awkward atmosphere began to form, our accusing words hanging heavy in the air.

She had noticed.

I had noticed.

Neither of us knew how to go about it.

Unsure of what to say, I returned to watching the sunset as well, finding it's slowly disappearing luminous to be ironic. We kept becoming closer, only to slip away further, then to repeat the process.

I wanted to say something, anything, to break the cloying silence that was rapidly filling between us.

"It's beautiful." I commented quietly, referring to the brilliant sunset before us.

"You are," she replied softly, echoing my words the night before.

Stunned, I looked at her then, trying to make sense of the emotions on her face.

Without saying more, she got up and made her way towards the hotel. I watched until she disappeared behind the double doors.

"She called me beautiful..." I said out loud, as if reassuring myself such a thing happened. Of course she had several times before back in our Morning Musume days, but the compliment held a much more profound meaning now.

Should I talk to her now? Leave her be?

Rubbing my temples, I let out a low groan. The no boyfriend rule in Morning Musume almost seemed like a blessing now after having to deal with all the conflicting, confusing, and what the heck worthy emotions the past couple days. I knew what I had to do though, and started to roll up my towel to hang up. I had to go talk to her, while things were slowly coming out in the open.

***

She wasn't in our room when I went inside, so I opted to take a quick shower to remove the sand and chlorine. Stepping out, I began to dry off before slipping on the clothes I picked out. A black t-shirt with the word Hawaii written to the upper left of the shirt with colorful flowers replacing the dots of the end letters. Pulling on a pair of red shorts, I tied my hair back into two low ponytails before exiting the bathroom.

I found Ai stretched out on her bed, looking as if she had just stepped out of the shower as well. Her hair was still slightly damp, and she had on new clothes. The TV was lit with a program she was watching, although the click of the bathroom door caused her to look my way.

"I took a shower in Eri and Reina's bathroom while you took yours." she commented, having noticed the questioning look on my face.

That wasn't quite the question I had in mind to be answered, but I was wondering that.

"Mm," I hummed out in short reply before throwing myself on my bed stomach first. Laying there, I grabbed some pillows and propped myself up at the foot of the bed to watch the program she had on.

"What are you watching?" I asked, trying to figure out the show.

They were speaking in English, and I thought I recognized some of the actresses.

"I'm not sure. The blond woman looks familiar though." she replied, her voice sounding a bit guarded.

Nodding into my pillow, we watched the movie for a while as I formulated on what to say to her.

After a while, a particular scene was played out that slapped Ai and I hard across the face.

Did that girl just kiss the other? The tension became so thick in the bedroom that I thought I'd choke on it.

Stealing a peak at Ai, I noticed she was looking at me as well and quickly looked back at the TV when our gazes locked together. She changed the channel, flipping through several until leaving it on a news station.

I guess she hoped there wouldn't be females making out during the weather report. I would have laughed at the thought if my mind wasn't already reeling on what had just happened. Sitting up, I looked over at her and saw that her posture was rigid.

"Ai-chan?"

She turned her attention towards me, her expression almost looking afraid.

This wouldn't do.

Getting up, I walked the short distance to her bed and plopped down at the foot of it, my knee brushing up against her leg.

"We need to talk," I said finally, knowing that this couldn't be avoided.

If she hated me forever, or was disgusted with it, then so be it. I would just have to bear it. I couldn't continue to keep this a secret from her. I had never kept stuff from her before. Ai was always the first person I went to when I had a problem, and I wanted to reestablish that closeness.

"We're friends right?" I questioned, receiving an odd look from her.

"Of course we are."

"So we can talk about anything, right?"

"Right..." she replied quietly, her gaze boring into me.

Drawing in a deep breath, I slowly released it, feeling some of the tension dissipate.

"Well, I... I li-" I started, but was unable to finish as heavy pounding thudded against our door.

Giving a startled yelp, I began to mutter to myself on who could possibly need one of us at this very moment.

Ai followed close behind as I went to open the door to find Mari standing there.

She didn't even give me a chance to say anything as she yanked my arm and pulled me out into the hall.

"Hey! Whats with this all the sudden?" I questioned, annoyance lightly lacing my voice.

"No time to explain. I'll bring her back to you soon Ai-chan!" she called over her shoulder to a bewildered Ai.

This couldn't be happening...

Mari...
