If I'm not mistaken, Elfen Lied was actually labeled as NC-17 -- one of the few non-hentai anime given that rating. It's definitely not for the faint of heart.

...it seems that every one is either going Elfen Lied or Monster but there is no contest here....GANTZ!!! I actually found the Gore, sex, and Violence VERY appropriate considering the storyline! If you don't know what I'm talking about then come back at me when you have ur grown up hairs......

Actually, Elfen Lied is rated TV-Mature! I just got the box set two weeks ago! Now i can watch it with English subs or dubs! it's the only anime out there where in the first episode some unsuspecting secretary gets her head ripped off! Mnemosyne is also a very graphic anime, though the plot is difficult to understand at first.

I totally agree with you on Le Portrait de Petit Cossette. It's stylish and can be interpreted in many ways by the audience.

I don't think it's R-rated. But it's definitely an anime for mature minds and thinkers.

You're correct. It's an anime series so it's technically not a movie. Ratings such as "R" and "NC-17" are used by the MPAA for films. "TV-MA" is the rating equivalent of "NC-17" given to television shows by the FCC. Either way, both are unsuitable for children under 17 because of violence/sex/language.

most of the deep-meaning and great animes are 17+ , or R-rated cause people know that giving an anime like this to some 9 year-old will be a waste because they'll say stupid things like "this anime sucks" and thats why this is intended for older people

I don't really think there are to many anime that are rated that, at least in the U.S.(translated of course) because citizens in our society are too conservative in their views on television when it comes to children. For instance, in most anime that is in Japenese there are many offensive slang words and "curse" words. But when they are translated to English, they censor most of it out. I think this is because people can't handle the fact that it's just animation, they're not mature enough to accept it. That's why there are so many limits and restrictions on movies and such; because a child just couldn't handle the concept or complexities of mature viewings, such as Elfen Lied.
