yeah i think rap is music and also an influential version of poetry
of course nowadays rappers are beginning to talk and rap about some inappropriate stuff
but some rappers actually have some good rap like back in the day
(im only 14 so idk how it was back then)
i like to listen to old rappers who actually rap about life and stuff thats true like Tupac
but i still like the really silly raps like for example: Soulja Boy
haha i still like doin the dance because its fun and the beat is somethin u can groove to
but rap is kinda dull now because all they talk about is gang-banging, drugs, shooting, hoes, money,or sex
i rest my case...lol

Rap is indeed music no matter how much I despise it with all my soul. Though in truth it leans closer to spoken poetry. It is music as long as people label it as such, I mean really any music with lyrics could be considered literature put to music. But we don't call it that we call it music as a whole. So, in the end I guess it is. I have to say rp is not what one would call a good influence upon others. Since the majority of it can be summed up as sex, money, violence and drugs. But then again emo music and be summed up in some broad generic terms I am sure.

i like rap/ hip hop and thats my own opinion just like everyone has thiers, but even if you do dislike this genrae of music this question is hard to argue because if you look at our sociaty today it is cosiderd music andused for everything especially when it comes to promoting the image of a product, i guess you could say it is music but it's slowly getting manipulated to make money, and thats why alot of ppl dont like it(if thmakes any sense at all)

rap is also a music, but some of the rap songs maybe has explicit lyrics and rap albums also has the "Parental Advisory" sticker label. rap is also same as the hip-hop and some rappers like Snoop Dogg, Jay-Z or Tupac, they can't rap if they can't have explicit lyrics.

Download an mp3 of Tupac, or at least pick a random song of his and go through the lyrics. There are explicit lyrics, but so what? His wordplay and lyrics are pure genius.
Will Smith's been crusading against this whole 'dirty lyrics in rap thing' but his movies like 'bad boys' aren't exactly squeaky clean aren't they?

Nowadays, rappers are usually ignorant and happy about it. I've seen KRS-One in a documentary once, and he sounds more intelligent and speaks excellently, unlike some of the rappers today with their limited vocabulary.

Of course it's still music.

Just because it's vulgar or plain bad doesn't mean it's not still music.

Hip hop is waaaay better because they tend to actually have a tune what-not. But it's still 'music' I suppose. <.<

Have you even read any other posts in this thread? Plenty of people have repeatedly said that stuff on MTV and BET isn't all the rap in the world, and that there are still plenty of good rappers out there. You'll probably never hear any of the good rappers if you never take the time out to research them, but it's still unfair to mercilessly bash the entire art form based on the small portion of it that you have experienced when plenty of people have told you that there are a fair amount of good artists. I understand if you don't like it, but you should still respect it as an art form, otherwise you'll probably miss out on some quality music just because you assume all of it sucks.
