READ--------> Defense Against the Dark Arts now begins. The first lesson is to learn about what Defense Against the Dark Arts is. After we get this all settled I will start getting it harder stuff. Each lesson will be posted up for 3 days after that I will give a couple questions (4-5) that will be posted up for 2 days. You can either PM me or post it on this topic (I wouldn't if I were u since someone can steal answers). Those are the rules if anyone has questions then you can PM me or post it here. Each question is 25 points. After 5-7 more lessons I will get into curses, hexes and other dark arts stuff if I'm aloud.
Lesson 3: Hand of Glory
The Hand of Glory is the dried and pickled hand of a man who has been hanged, often specified as being the left (Latin: sinister) hand, or else, if the man were hanged for murder, the hand that "did the deed."
According to old European beliefs, a candle made of the fat from a malefactor who died on the gallows, virgin wax, and Lapland sesame oil (the candle could only be put out with milk), and the hand having come from the said hanged criminal, lighted and placed in the Hand of Glory (as in a candlestick) would have rendered motionless all persons to whom it was presented. (In another version the hair of the dead man is used as a wick, also the candle is said to give light only to the holder.) The Hand of Glory also purportedly had the power to unlock any door it came across.
The legend is traceable to about 1440, but the name only dates from 1707. It was originally a name for the mandrake root (via French "mandragore" and thus, "maindegloire" - "hand of glory") that became conflated with the earlier legend. The confusion may have occurred because mandrakes are said to grow beneath the bodies of hanged criminals.
Recap for those who don't remember wear they showed the Hand Of Glory: The Hand of Glory is an instrument used by Draco in Half-Blood Prince. In Chamber of Secrets, it is described as a large shriveled hand displayed on a cushion in Borgin & Burkes. However, when a candle is placed in the hand, it gives light only to the person wielding it.
It was first seen in the second book, when Draco and his father, Lucius Malfoy, visited the Dark Arts store Borgin and Burkes in Knockturn Alley. (At that point, Lucius denied Draco's request to have it, saying that it was a tool for a common thief). And later on, in the sixth book, it was used by Draco when leaving the Room of Requirement, allowing him to escape from Ron and a few other members of Dumbledore's Army after using the Peruvian Instant Darkness Powder.
