did you give away your last name?

no, why? is that the most dangerous thing to do?

well yeah I guess......people usually look up people by their last name not your first and since not a lot of people have the same last name it would be a lot easier to find them

Hello!

Instant messaging on the computer has become the phone for kids today. Children spend hours chatting online with their friends, and sometimes with strangers (which is such a sad thing really for young kids). A recent study found that one in five children online is approached by a sexual predator, a predator who may try to set up a face-to-face meeting. So i advise with what you talk about with these strangers and watch yourself!

To actually show how desperate the predators are, a team of professionals follow the trail of an Internet predator prowling for children, from seduction in a chat room to a face-to-face meeting, Dateline rented a house, wired it with hidden cameras, and enlisted the help of an online vigilante group called "Perverted Justice." Volunteers from the group posed as teens in chat rooms, saying they were home alone and interested in sex. Within hours there were men literally lining up at our door.

^ lol, i agree. ;P

i think only lame and notsosmartinthehead people would give out their numbers and addresses to random people on the internet.
those are the people that end up getting raped, etc.

but it's nice to know that others are aware and against creepers. [GO SMART PEOPLE!]
i hope no one's a creeper here on cr. -.-;;

only retards give out realy personal info off the interwebs cause hackers can find that info

I doubt that there are that many hackers who would waste their time hacking into a normal citizen's computer. It's against a real hacker's codex, I believe.

Not everyone on the net is bad.

Of course not, that's not what I was trying to imply with my thread, it is just a warning, because people tend to forget and get careless. I mean, I, myself have found some awesome friends online, but I think, that I'll stick to my codex of 'never' meeting any of them in real life.

Well, I doubt that one can do much with just your first name, that is if your first name ain't that rare, like 'Mary', 'Jennifer', etc. It would take a real hacker to hack into your computer and make use of the info or use your IP address to find you, and I doubt that a many is able to do so. Just never give away your whole name (for example. Jennifer Smith), and your specific location such as your address or village/city....unless it is really a huge city like New York, and you are aware that there are quite a lot of people with the same first name as you.
Basically the system is like that, the more info you give a person about yourself, like your identity, location, etc. the easier you make it for someone to find out who you are and where you live. There are various programs who help to keep your anonymity online, but I don't know if there are any for free, the point of this program is that it hides and deletes every info your computer is leaving behind on every website you visit(on every website you go, you leave info behind, i.e. IP address and other things) and I think having a dynamic IP address might be helpful as well or a proxy server :P

PS: Actually, if you give away your whole name, and the city you live in, then one doesn't even need a computer to find you, I think phone books would do the deal as well

Floetry~

EDIT: Anyone, please correct me if I am wrong about the identity case.

Thank you Flo, for making this.

My story from years and years ago...

I was 19. I was playing a MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game) I was a guild leader, i had no job at the time, so i spent hours upon hours online playing, Enough that i was made Guild leader and "knew" everyone in my guild, as well as the guild leaders chat. My Character even got "married" to another guild leader (played by a woman in Australia) My second in command of my guild was an 18 year old guy who lived in NorthEast USA. While i lived in texas. We spent a lot of time online together planning raids and things for our guild. Needless to say, one thing led to another and we ended up trading phone numbers.

I had some problems with needing a new place to stay and since i didn't have a job, he offered to share a place with me in the NorthEast and he said he could get me a job at the place he worked. Which sounded wonderful at the time. So i E-mailed him my resume (with all my personal info on it) and he was going to take it to work with him and try to get me a job.

I felt i trusted him a lot. Since i was planning on moving in with him as a roommate. He told me that they wanted to meet me and interview me for the job. I was concerned because I had no way of getting up to the NorthEast from Texas.

He offered to buy me a plane ticket to get there for the interview.

I flew up there and he informed me after a day of me being there that he was getting laid off.

I spent a week in the NorthEast playing online games in his basement. Fending off his attempts to sleep with me. (he looked NOTHING like his picture)

It could have been much worse. He could have raped me, he could have done any number of things to me. I'm glad he was relatively safe (other then fending off his advances)

This was a wake up call for me.

I'm actually going to go meet people from the internet (from CR actually) and to be perfectly honest, i'm scared shitless of what i'm going to find.

However, nothing sexual has gone on between myself and any of the people i'm going to meet (and i'm meeting more females then males LOL)

But at least this time... i've got some fighting skills to protect me. and i'm not as naive as i was. I've got my own hotel arrangements, i've got my own way around, my only problem.... i don't speak german.... >.>

So, yeah... anyway... i've extrapolated enough on here.. gah, why do people link things from their profiles onto the forums! you bring me back to this desolate POS!!!

The Gov/Feds is doing a pretty good job of creating safer environments but there's still the percentage that get away with it.

And on a similiar subject there's online dating...
I never really believed in Online Dating, I know there are a lot of debates about that subject.
People just need to be aware of every single risk and situation where an online predator can take of advantage of you.
If you are going to online date, which is usually where the whole online predator thing comes into play, you better make damn sure that the pictures they show, if they show them, ARE THEM, and be very careful if you're thinking about calling, they will get your number...You should block it lol or not call at all..
Dont give anything out too freely people.

O__o by someone from CR? Where did this happen? And was it a serious "rape" or just a joke? (there are actually quite a lot of these cyber/pedo freaks on this site )
Btw, I am very sorry for what happened to your friend! That is if it was really a serious thing!

Just make clear to the people who start to flirt with you, or want to cyber with you, that you don't want to, and if they won't stop, then tell them that you will block and avoid them if they will not stop with this things! And if that doesn't make you feel safe, then report them for "sexual harassment".(Don't forget to make screenshots, or have some evidence about it, for example PMs and such) ^^

Actually this thread should really get stickied so that others might read this before something happens to them, eventually.

Floetry~

PS: PM me if you don't want to talk about this in public! ^^
