Junko Saotome in "Nana". She is born in Africa from an african father if i remember well and appear in chapter 1 and episode 1 of manga and animé

Nadia from Nadia: the secret of blue water is the hero of the animé about the book "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea"

So there is some Black heroes and some Black characters from the start story episode 1

After there is capitalism that make it harder. When a mangaka draw his characters and his hero, he have to wait 1 to 3 years to go in an animé if its a sucess and this animé can wait for 3 to 5 years to go on an american network if its a sucess. So there can be 3 to 8 years between his first draw and the possibility you see it on your Usa Tv. That only mean a mangaka is at risk if he draw a Black hero. Hachibi just appears in Naruto 10 years after the first drawn and Naruto is already a world sucess so the mangaka didnt took any risk and its a reference to mohamed ali more than anything else. Thats means that lot of number 10 or more characters ll appear as a black one in already successfull manga or animé. they usualy appears after the chapter 100 in mangas (100 chapter= 2 year old manga already). Yoruichi from bleach appears chap 51 as a cat and chap 131 as a black human so 3 years waiting and 2 years after the success of Bleach...

Frist off bravo. Probably one of the best writen responses I have ever read on here. I never knew the time line behind when it was ok to introduce a black character into an anime, but thinking back on it now the only ones I have ever seen where in series that were doing really well with the public, and even then the black characters were never really main characters. There was one thing I couldn't really agree with you on and its not so much that I don't agree but that the information is misconstrude.
"Another reason i see is not the cultural thing but the mythologie, history, war and books thing. Animé/manga take already storyline and characteristic from japan/china mythologie and wars, space/fairytale/heroic fantasy books, nordic mytologie, greek and roman mythology and wars, Middle age european wars and kingdoms, religious stories like for angels and demons etc etc. Thats somethings where Blacks didnt made their place and the things they have for them are most sports, jazz, 60's and afro culture, music, voodoo and shamans, 2 or 3 african tales and egypt mythologies, zoulous wars (pretty the only known wars with blacks in),slavery period, capoera, brazil jutsus...surely more but im not an encyclopedia lol"
The thing about that is that a lot of the information partaining to black people has been lost over time. It is well known that one of the largest libraries in ancient Alexandria burned to the ground erasing tons of history and knowledge in its wake, so that people would think that way is not surprising, but its just not true. According to science and even the bible Black people are one of the oldest races of humans there is, and I really don't know of one that is older. Scientist have "speculated" that the first people on earth were black people, and even in the bible Noahs first born son Ham was black. The first known world power was the Egyptian empire and unlike the ptolemaic egypty everyone knows so well the first egyptians were actually black people they became the white skinned nobles we all know of after the envasion of the greek empire. Its sad in my opinion, but true that alot of black history is either lost or kept secret. I was once told by an older Japanese man about a black slave who was purchased by Nobunaga and turned into his personal body guard. The Japanese man who told me this story said that it was almost impossible to find out about, because it was regarded as one of Japanes secrets and is not added in the history books (he said he read aobut it in a book a long time ago), but this once slave was said to have killed 100+ men in the defence of his lord before he was brought down and slain along with his lord... No matter what people choose to think or cover up for that matter blacks have already had a major influence over the entire. The problem is like with; most things in this world, the colore fades over time. black people don't stay black even my own family just one generaion ago was black before that they were more so white, and soon with the next comeing generation of my family they will be back to white. Curly hair, dark, tan or olive colored skin, these are all signs of african heritage even if the blood is down to less then 1 percent the DNA never goes away. There are alot of us out there that are black and may not even know it. That is why I look forward to the day when we can have more blacks in anime. We have had our time in the sun as world powers, musicians, athletes, creators and creations for that matter. I dream of the day when I can see a real black hero in anime. We have been lost in the epics of history for too long we need a hero to rise from the ashes of our lost memories and remind people of our great and long past haha something like that. I really feel someday there wont be any more black peolpe so I hope I can see one rise in the anime world while I'm still here to really appreciate it.

The problem is people who make anime tend not to be good enough at writing for black people (who they generally know few of) to make one that isn't at least partially offensive or stereotyped, or no different in terms of personality from every other race of characters, which is next to impossible in most settings due to the fact that racism DOES exist within the context of their own stories.

Writing for minorities or alien cultures (in Japan, anyways) in general is a very tough balancing act, and anyone who does so successfully should be applauded.

I don't know, I don't think it should require knowing a lot of black people. People are people, all you have to do to have a black character is animate it that way. There are black people who have all different kind of personalities so really the possibility is only limited to what kind of character the creator wants to make.

but I think that is his point. Because they don't know many black people they don't know THAT. They more then likely think there is a set pattern for personalities and behavior, and really can you blame them? this was the last country in histoy to open its doors to the world.

the author of manga/anime in japan rarely see and meet black people in their daily life, so it's understandable that they not even think about creating one in their manga/anime...
