Katalina’s
Rain in France wasn’t that common, but tonight it was pouring, falling from the sky like the bitter tears in a jilted bride.
But of course in a certain restaurant where only the best of London’s cuisine is given could there be enough light and sound to drown out the dreary rain.
Katalina’s,
Where the rich eat, actors, opera singers, poets, kings, politicians, the Lords and Ladies of the old and new world.
Allen Walker frowned as his manager Komui Lee went on and on about the greatness of his restaurant.
He ran one pale hand through his snowy locks and sighed, that sound id not go undetected as Lenalee, Komui’s younger sister, sent him a sour look.
He blushed, she was the prettiest and the most popular, even more so then the cook’s nephew Rhode.
But alas who was he a meagre waiter to the sub manager and the assistant cook in an all famous restaurant.
At his left stood his fellow waiter and best friend Lavi, he got this job by connections from his old genius grandfather.
He was half French and half English, but he possessed no accent which was strange, Allen liked to pride himself on his English accent, even Lenalee complimented him on it.
But Lavi was a mysterious character, he had this big...bright red hair, which wasn’t very common in neither France nor England. And an eye patch, no he was not a pirate although sometimes when he was in the mood he would grin at Allen and proclaimed that he was indeed a pirate and that he was there to steal his booty which was funny until the head cook Lulubell smacked him over the head with a frying pan.
Lavi winked at him and Allen smiled in return, he was so sure that if the red head wasn’t around his life would be very dull.
As Komui finally finished his speech about Lenalee’s soon to come promotion, Rhode snuck out of the kitchen and made her sneaky little way towards Allen and Lavi.
Allen had to agree that although Lenalee was a kind and gentle person she kept away from the lower class, as though she thought she was better.
But Rhode, no she was all for all, she was quirky, funny, and insane to the point where it was scary.
She once told Allen while he was watching the sub-manager scolded Lavi about flirting with the clients that “The world is a playground, and this is my dollhouse and you are all my toys...but you Allen, you’re my favourite even though you like her more”
Allen had asked what she meant but the dark skinned girl just smiled in that strange way and snuck back into the kitchen.
She was strange, her dark skin contrasted with the white of her uniform and apron, but melded nicely with her chocolate brown hair which stuck out messily over her head.
She grinned at Allen when he noticed her.
Stopping to stand next to him she tugged on his shirt cuff.
“Hey Allen” she whispered “what’s going on?”
Allen pouted “Lenalee’s getting promoted”
The young girl sighed “as usual, she get’s promoted before everyone even Lulubell and she works harder then anyone here”
Lavi smirked as he reached behind Allen too ruffle Rhode’s hair, “she’s just another pretty face, don’t worry about it”
Allen sighed softly “she is very pretty”
Rhode snorted delicately “it sucks that there’s no business today so that you could see her in the new waitress’s uniform”
Allen flushed “...You mean...”
“The short” Lavi began.
“Teeny weenie” added Rhode.
“Skirt...” Allen finished smiling and letting his imagination run away with him.
Lavi pouted and ruffled Allen’s short snow coloured hair.
“Why did it have to rain today?” he whispered.
Lenalee was beaming at her new badge and Komui was dancing and howling about his younger sibling’s beauty and how he was going to protect her form any perverts...and potential boyfriends.
Potential boyfriends would mean the owner of the flower shop down the street, his name was Bak and he was madly in love with Lenalee, he sent her flowers, made her dresses he gave her everything.
Allen nodded “we never get business when it’s raining”
Rhode sighed “well, I think it’s about time for me to get back to the kitchen boys.”
Allen glanced down at her and sent her a small smile.
“Alright then...” he looked back to where Lenalee was scolding her brother about hurting Bak.
That ‘poor nice man,’
Rhode pouted “don’t smile at me like that Allen, I might think you like me” she said softly before sneaking away.
Lavi gave Allen a soft nudge in the ribs “so who do you like better?”
Allen turned to his friend “WH-what?”
“Come on Allen” Lavi smirked “Rhode or the wonderful yet unattainable Lenalee”
Allen stared at him, the other’s were getting back to work the ‘Watch Lenalee win more money then you ever will in a lifetime Time’ was over.
“Don’t joke around Lavi” Allen said smoothing out the front of his black vest, and checking the cuff buttons on his long-sleeved white shirt.
Lavi sighed “you always say that”
Allen smiled “I know” and he walked out of the meeting room and down the narrow hallway littered with doors to the kitchens where usually other waiters would be going in and out in a rush, frenzy.
Allen did think that his living right now was not enough to support him but he liked it.
Everyday was different, sometimes different people from different contrived would come in and eat food form his homeland and say “wow, this is good”
And Allen would reply “thank you, come again”
It was a small and repetitive existence but Allen liked this.
This enjoyable existence.
He and Lavi were heading to the front kitchens, rainy days Katalina’s was a dry, hot and uncomfortable place, and the amount of customers was low.
Only two or three people came in on rainy days.
Of course today was especially rainy, because, the waiters assumed, the new waitress uniforms arrived and they were short, and cute and frilly and leave it to nature to ruin the only opportunity for ogling that rarely came along in their line of work.
Lavi touches Allen’s shoulder to stop him.
Allen turns around “hm?”
Lavi points into one of the rooms their next to.
Lenalee was standing in Komui’s office; she caught sight of them and motioned for them to come in.
Allen smiled back and waved and stayed like that unit Lavi dragged him into the room.
Lenalee smiled at them tossing her long black hair over her shoulder.
“Lenalee” Lavi said grinning “what trouble you must be in to be summoning two misfits like us this rainy night”
“Oh well brother says that he’s got a job for us”
Allen was still smiling, she smiled back albeit a little awkwardly.
Lavi nudged Allen in the ribs “oh, what luck you found us so quickly”
Allen nodded “did ...did he say what it was...the job I mean...”
Lenalee sighed “apparently these two weirdoes just came in; I don’t really know the details, Lulubell’s inside with Rhode getting their orders”
Lavi nodded and Allen smiled again.
Then the door to Komui’s office opened and a tall, dark-skinned woman stepped out she glared at them “oh, what are you girls doing here?”
Lavi gave her a weak smile.
Lenalee scowled “don’t you have a job to do?”
Rhode poked out from behind her and grinned at Lenalee “don’t you Miss Pretty?”
Lenalee sighed and walked into her brother’s office and stood awaiting the boys.
Lulubell leaned over and kissed Allen on his forehead “be good boys” she ruffled Lavi’s hair and stalked out and back into the hallways.
Rhode pecked both their cheeks and skipped to the door “yeah, be good boys!” she winked at Allen “you guys might get lucky!”
Lavi walked into Komui’s office and Allen followed shutting the door behind him.
The two males sat down on the chair and Lenalee stood next to her brother with a winning smile on her face.
“Well boy’s I have a job for you”
“And me” Lenalee sparkled.
Komui shook his head “no dear, you’re job is done, thank you for bringing the boys here”
Lenalee’s smile faltered “what?”
“you’re job was to bring in the two waiters that will be attending these guests, I couldn’t possibly put you’re virtue in danger by dangling you in that new uniform in front of those two lecherous, but rich dogs”
“But brother-“
“No, now please excuse us”
Lenalee gave her brother a very angry glare and stomped out of the room.
Allen was in shock, this did not just happen, him a misfit and Lavi a super misfit did not just get picked over Lenalee.
Some part of him was proud at the fact and a bigger part mainly his heart felt bad that she didn’t get picked; she was beautiful and amazing she totally deserved it.
But then he thought about Rhode and how she smiled at everything every sly barb that Lenalee threw at her and smirked, perhaps Miss Pretty needed a break.
Allen and Lavi waited for Komui to speak.
The older man pushed his glasses up his nose and gave them a hard stare.
“This is a tough one boys,” he said “there are two clients out there, and I’m not sure their here for food, but you guys are going to go out there and do WHATEVER they want understand?”
Lavi and Allen nodded sombrely “Lavi you’re client is the tall dark and mysterious one”
Lavi nodded “Allen, you get the angry Japanese man,”
Allen nodded with an enthusiasm he didn’t possess.
“Guys, I want you both to milk them of whatever they have to offer, depending on how much those two pay for tonight’s services you’ll both be promoted”
Allen and Lavi gasped.
“We’ll do our best Supervisor!” Allen said grinning; this would give him the opportunity to get closer to Lenalee.
Komui grinned at them “good, now off with you I have paperwork!”
Lavi and Allen rose and left the office.
Outside they continued down the rest of the hallway, Lavi said that he was going to start first and headed into the kitchens, Allen was taking the main entrance he patted his friend on the back and wished him luck.
The main entrance doors were wooden and a dark seep red color with golden knobs.
He remembered how proud Komui had been when he’d bought those doors.
Next to Allen there was a tall wooden shelf with menu tomes, he picked one out and reached towards the door, “wait!”
He turned around and saw Rhode running towards him, he stopped and turned around fully to meet her.
She was still shorter then he was but she hugged him the best she could.
“What’s wrong Rhodie?” he asked playfully, he knew she didn’t like it when he called her Rhodie.
Rhode sighed into his shirt.
When she looked up at him with amber eyes and smiled weakly “you gotta remember me okay?”
Allen chuckled “of course I will”
“I know you like Lenalee; I’m okay with it but no matter what happens tonight I want you to remember me”
Allen stared at her confused “well, I do like Lenalee but that doesn’t mean I’ll forget you”
Rhode gave Allen a serious look “just remember me okay?”
Allen nodded and ruffled her hair “alright, now back to work you don’t want Lulubell to get angry right?”
Rhode nodded and smiled at him “okay!” and she let him go and sprinted off down the hall way where she’d come.
Allen on the other hand with the same task in mind, turned around and stepped through the doors.
This late at night Katalina’s was lit like a bed room being set for romance.
Each single square table sported a lovely single red wax candle to go with the crimson silk of the table cloth and handkerchiefs.
Usually the center chandelier would be lit brightening up the beautiful room but tonight because it was raining and Komui wanted to save money on the electric bill left it off.
So each table was lit with their lovely candles, one of the windows was open to let out the delicate scented smoke and letting inside the smell of rain.
Allen liked the smell of rain actually; he felt that he could appreciate more then others, because it reminded him of London.
Of home.
As he strode down the mahogany coloured carpeted floor he saw a mysterious man in the far left corner of the room.
Lavi was rushing back and forth from the table and to the table balancing cups and small bowls in his tray.
Allen waved back when Lavi beamed at him while he made his merry way back to the kitchens.
He turned to the right then, on a small table in the near center was another man seated, he looked annoyed as he fidgeted with his handkerchief, “that must be him” Allen whispered as he made his way towards the other man’s table.
What is wrong with this guy!?
Lavi rushed into the kitchen for the fifth time that night, so much food for a single man! How weird.
Lavi gave Lulubell a small sheet of paper that Tyki had given him, yes his name was strange too Tyki Mikk, it held the names of sweets, delicacies and tea.
Lulubell gave him a look “perhaps you might trying suggesting something lighter for him, he’ll gain weight from eating so much sweets”
Rhode who was next to her, giggled.
Lavi smirked “I’ll try”
He headed back out into the dining room and found Tyki poking at his bowl of custard with the opposite end of his fork.
“Ah, Tyki...Sir you eat that”
Tyki looked at him with those ....those eyes. It made Lavi nervous when he looked at him like that, good god, they were golden, not like Rhode’s, but like a molten sunset, and his hair was curly and wavy and Lavi being the flirty loving person really, really, REALLY wanted to run his fingers through that hair, and his suit should be illegal, a regular gentleman’s suit, black and white with a top hat. But the collar was low and open and it troubled Lavi, the whole situation troubled Lavi, how could he be ogling a rich, apparently arrogant stranger like he was right now.
Tyki smiled at him “...well, you still haven’t given me you’re name, shall I ask?”
Lavi promptly blushed “ah, I think it would trouble the client to have to call a waiter by name”
Tyki’s serpent like smile never faltered “ah, but you are mine for tonight...Right?”
Lavi’s flush grew “s...s-s-sir?”
What was this man talking about?
Tyki motioned him to come closer “here I want you to taste this, if you think its good then I want you’re name in exchange”
Lavi tried to stammer out a reply but Tyki reached out and placed his single finger under Lavi’s chin and with his skilled hands he recovered a single silver spoon and scooped out a little bit of cinnamon custard and with that golden gaze melting through Lavi’s defences he made the boy come closer.
Their faces inches apart he parted his lips “ah...”
Lavi’s eyes escaped Tyki’s and stayed glued to his lips his own soft lips responded parting slightly. Either Tyki was blatantly ignoring Lavi’s lusty stare or he was completely oblivious.
To Lavi it seemed as though they’d gotten closer.
“Ahh...” Tyki whispered gently his lips parting even wider.
Lavi followed moving just a bit closer, and for a moment he thought that Tyki had kissed him, but then what was in his mouth taste like custard, damn!
Lavi jerked back his cheeks flushing; he took the spoon from his mouth and glared at Tyki “wh...What were you doing!?”
Tyki reached out and took the spoon from Lavi’s trembling hands and gave him a wicked smile.
“You mean, what were you doing?”
Lavi flushed “y-you...sir I was told to advise you not to order too many sweets, you will gain weight!” he bit out the last part his cheek’s flushing a deeper red.
He could handle this “please enjoy you’re meal!” and he skittered away from the table ignoring the incredibly suggestive way that Tyki licked the spoon. But he completely missed the outraged yelling that was happening on the other end of the restaurant.
“WELL IF YOU DON’T LIKE IT THEN LEAVE!”
“I DON’T LIKE IT BUT I’M NOT LEAVING UNTIL I GET MY FUCKING ORDER!”
“WE DON’T HAVE THAT!”
“HOW CAN YOU NOT HAVE IT?! ARE YOU STUPID OR SOMETHING!?”
“I’M NOT STUPID SIR YOU’RE BEING UNREASONABLE!”
“I’M NOT BEING UNREASONABLE YOU’RE JUT AN IDIOT!”
Time warp...
The stranger on the table seemed calm enough.
But when Allen got the table the man gave him such a clearly angry glare that he stepped back a few times.
“Took you’re time didn’t you beansprout” he said tartly.
Allen gave him that sweet as honey smile but oh, it was fake, who the hell was this jackass and how dare he call him Beansprout!?
“Sir, what would you like to order?”
The man glared at him again “Soba”
Allen’s sweet smile faltered “I’m sorry, Soba?”
The man just glared at him “well get me some fucking soba already you old man”
“I’m sorry sir if you just refrain from the insults-“
“I said, get me my fucking soba you idiot”
“sir-“
“My name isn’t sir you fucking beansprout”
“Well, sir my name isn’t Beansprout...sir” Allen bit out.
The man glared at him but this time Allen glared back.
Usually when this happened the client would roar out about he lack of service and stomp out of the restaurant and never come back, but Allen saw something unfamiliar in those midnight blue eyes.
“May I take you’re order...?” Allen asked again his glare never missing a beat.
The man smirked at him and leaned back in his seat “Kanda, now get me my damn soba you beansprout”
And that was what led to...
Time warp end...
“I’M NOT BEING UNREASONABLE YOU’RE JUST AN IDIOT!”
He’d told him so many times, so. Many. Times.
But as Kanda acted as thought he couldn’t hear a thing that Allen said.
Finally Allen gave up “fine!” he stomped away from the table but then came back and while Kanda was giving him a smug grin he asked “would you like to drink something with that?”
Kanda took his sweet time, of course but then he snatched Allen by the collar and tugged him forwards and with his lips right next to Allen’s ear he whispered “what’s you’re name beansprout?”
Allen thought he was on the verge of having a heart attack from the way it was beating wildly in his chest.
“Ah...Allen, sir”
Kanda chuckled and moved his lips closer to Allen’s ear his hot breath burning the sensitive skin of Allen’s ear.
“So what should I call you...beansprout Or Allen?”
Allen’s breath caught in his throat and he froze, this person, this man holding him did not just say his name like that, like he just sexed it into his ear, oh god Allen felt so violated but he’d never imagined it would feel so ...so good in a weird way.
Wait a minute, this was not good, no, no not at all no flirting with the clients, but he wasn’t flirting he was being flirted at...Right? Oh god this was confusing.
Allen jerked back from the Japanese man looking very flustered “Beansprout, okay you can call me beansprout!” he exclaimed backing away, he quickly turned around and all but ran out of the room.
Never before had Allen ever believed that the kitchens were a haven, safe and comforting.
He leaned against the wall trying to calm himself down, but what brought a smile to his face was seeing Lavi sitting in a corner with his face in his hands.
He walked over to his friend; Rhode was next to the red head patting him on the shoulder “its okay Lavi”
“What happened?” Allen asked kneeling in front of his friend happy to keep thoughts of Kanda at bay.
Lavi sighed; Rhode looked at Allen and grinned “his client is demanding”
“He’s a pervert” Lavi grumbled.
“So are you” Allen stated, Lavi looked at him scowling “not at work!”
“Yes at work” both Rhode and Allen said at the same time.
“What...but he’s...”
“Deal with it” Rhode said sighing.
“But he’s, Allen what about you’re client!”
Allen frowned “....he’s annoying and persistent and argumentative and impolite and angering and he makes fun of me and he’s really mean, and he looks at me funny sometimes and he’s just really annoying and-“
He stopped when he noticed Rhode and Lavi staring at him.
“What?”
Rhode gave him a small smile “he sounds great”
Lavi nodded “so...how long have you guys been dating?”
Allen flushed to the tips of his hair as his two friends burst into laughter.
“Hey that’s not funny!” Allen protested “he’s a guy and, and I don’t like him!” he protested.
“I like Lenalee!”
Both Lavi and Rhode froze as they looked over his head.
Allen didn’t blush he just lost all the color in his face and shuddered “she’s right behind me isn’t she?”
“Allen, can I talk to you for a moment?” said the delicate feminine voice behind him “you too Lavi”
Both boys stood and followed Lenalee to the entrance where she told them to stop talking and listen.
“I know it’s not a normal thing for two rich clients to come at the same time on the days where we have hardly any clients at all but in this case I was really expecting you two to behave”
She looked at Lavi and frowned “I’m deeply disappointed in you Lavi, you called Lord Tyki Mikk fat, he told me that you continued to bring him candy and sweets and never listened to his orders and that you were shamelessly flirting with him.”
Lavi’s eyes widened but he kept silent.
“I expected more from you, he by all means should have suggested or demanded you’re immediate expulsion from this restaurant but he did not, he told me that he understood how hard it is to get a job these days and said he would accept a formal apology.”
Lavi let his eyes drift from the girls face and to the door where he ached to stomp out there and punch that damn liar in the face.
“Lavi!” Lenalee snapped she sighed and placed her dainty fingers on her forehead in a pose of distress.
“Please, go and apologize to him for you’re disgraceful behaviour, before I have to go tell brother”
Lavi nodded “right” he said his tone was solemn, Allen knew that he was angry.
He left the room.
“Allen” Lenalee said her tone grave.
Allen kept his immediate attention on her.
“I know that you’re a hard worker, and you are an excellent waiter but Kanda Yuu is a very hardworking business man, I had also expected more of you, losing you’re temper because of a simple order is not the way a worker should behave in front of an important client. Yuu said he was very disappointed in you’re service and that he had never been so insulted in his life, you called him an old man, a beansprout and then you...gosh Allen” she flushed “you know I never thought you would ever do such a thing, “
‘What did he say?” Allen asked trying to control his temper with a sweet smile.
“He said you groped him and whispered suggestive things in his ear, gosh I can’t believe you would do something so shameful”
Allen would have protested but she had said to stay quiet and listen, she sighed again and looked at him her deep green eyes showing how deep her disappointment went. “Allen, I heard what you said back there, but after hearing what you did, I’m afraid I would like our relationship to remain strictly professional”
Allen’s heart sank.
“Yuu demands an apology from you and excellent service to make up for you’re behaviour”
Allen nodded and turned to the door but before he turned and took hold of Lenalee’s hand.
“Lenalee I’m disappointed in you too”
Lenalee yanked her wrist from his grip soothing an ache that wasn’t there, because Allen would never have hurt her.
“I’m disappointed that you would believe some stranger over me...” he said before letting his eyes drift from her form.
It seemed as though the light that had always surrounded her with beauty and light and joy and love had dissipated, like his hopes for her heart, like his love of her had been sucked dry by this painful rejection because of a simple lie.
He glared at the knobs as he opened the doors and walked back out there leaving his trampled heart and that wretched girl behind.
