If this anime had romance, it would be horribly cliche. And perverted, which is very annoying in anime.

I personally think there shouldn't be romance involved in this anime. With the way this whole series feels in general, I prefer Natsume to open up to FRIENDS and not to romance just too quickly.

I think Natsume Yujinchou is better off without the extra sap. Besides, there are short romances in the series anyways. I don't think Natsume needs a crush to make the show more interesting. I'd rather see things develop between side characters rather than the main character. it would just be plain old cliche if that happened.

I think this anime is perfect how it is ^^
And, as some people have said already, if there IS a romance, it wouldn't have the same feel as the rest of the show... There are enough little side romances in the story to satisfy me ^^

I hope this anime stays just how it is now ^^

And, just as a side note, Natsume seems to be more like the Youkai in that... well, he doesn't mess with gender...? I don't know, but, I just hope the anime doesn't have a romance ^^

I disagree with all the people who think romance would make this cliche, but this in particular, because romance is not inherently perverse. Not even sure why you'd think that; ecchi and romance are two different things. They're certainly not mutually exclusive, but it's easily possible to have one without the other.

To address everyone who complained about romance being "cliche", cliches appear so often because when used correctly, they work. A good romance can have great depth and even be the main theme of a story and still be completely original. And it's quite clear that if a romance DID appear in Natsume Yujincho, it wouldn't be the main theme.

Personally, I'd love to see a romance. I'm tired of watching Natsume be a dick to Sasada and ditching her whenever he can for no apparent reason. I'm tired of Natsume always acting all soft-spoken and lonely when he rebuffs so many attempts at a closer friendship from the humans in his life. Sure, he has the youkai, but even with them he's often standoffish. There's a little bit of growth, and that's good, but almost every episode concentrates on new youkai instead of developing his relationships with the old ones. It always follows the same pattern, too:
meet youkai; find out sad story about youkai that misses someone; decide to help youkai; Madara thinks it's a bad idea but goes along with it anyway because he has a gruff exterior and a heart of gold or something; Natsume overcomes all obstacles and helps youkai; he feels sad when it's gone, and then never really talks about it again.

Sure, there's a few variations. Sometimes Sasada will show up just to get the shaft again. Sometimes Tanuma will appear to provide latent sexual tension and cryptic hints at loneliness. Yada yada yada, it's still the same formula and it needs to change up a bit.

Heck, if the formula wasn't getting so tiresome, I'd be happy even WITHOUT a romance. As it stands, though, romantic tension (hell, with Tanuma or even Madara for all I care, though I'd prefer Sasada or possibly Hinoe) would be a fantastic way of revitalizing this by adding something new.

EDIT: Good god that's long, I'm sorry. My basic point is in the first two paragraphs, but read them all if you're gonna argue with me.

I don't particularly understand this question because there's been romance in about every episode. Just not to Natsume. Don't any of you notice how the atmosphere around Natsume changes when he sees the love the youkai and otherwise share? By my interpretation, Natsume wishes he had someone like that too. All the same, he doesn't obsess over it.

I'm not sure how to explain it, but he has a very balanced state of mind. He's more than happy to be surrounded by such friendship but there's this faint emotion of loneliness when he sees the sub-cast in love or when someone (youkai, mostly) leaves him. Or whatever they do when they become incorporeal and shine really bright.

Anyway, a good example would be the firefly episode. He isn't quick to fall in love or anything, but there's that feeling of anticipation. He isn't afraid to extend a part of himself and hope that there's a spark of interest. At the same time, he doesn't become a martyr to the idea.

There is some under-the-radar romance in this anime. But in now way will it turn into a romance/drama genre. Er.. in conclusion, if you pay attention, whenever he sees a couple or whatever he has this feeling like, "Ahh, maybe me one day, eh?" Everybody wants to be loved.
