Hmmm........there are so many styles and so many uncommon styles as well...its hard to choose. as not all of the styles make to where we are familiar with.........I like the Tigers Claw...so somewhere along the lines of the Shaolin martial arts. Its hard to tell since a new shaolin temple was built and a lot of dojo's and what not claim to learn their martial arts from the shaolin temple...which i think is a bunch of ______ well...you know. I know my uncle teaches the Tiger's claw martial arts.

I've done a bit of a few different styles. The one that stuck with me best is progressive kick boxing. It uses a combination of Muay Thai, and Western boxing. The bottom half is pretty much Muay Thai, and the top half incorporates aspects of boxing, such as a predominant use of the cover guard, and the standard jab, cross, hook, uppercut, etc. It quite simple, and quick to learn the basics of. My teacher also shows me some nerve points, joint strikes, and other exotic moves he learned from gong fu (Mandarin spelling), but I don't really practice them much.

Most students doing progressive kick boxing also do Brazillian Jiujitsu. It's just a damn good ground fighting style. So many real fights end up on the ground, sooner or later. I haven't found the time for the extra lessons though.

If anyone wants to do qi (Chinese)/ki(Japanese) focussed training, I've seen it done, with quite amazing results, but it's not generally considered a practical martial art. It's done for many other reasons. It also takes a supreme level of dedication, to attain significant results. It seems that some people just don't get anywhere with it regardless. I prefer to study something simple, and effective, as I'm not prepared to devote most of my time to it.

btw, I think any martial art can be a great meditative focus, and well worth exploring for everyone.
