Hijab: Oppression or beauty?
Posted 2/15/09
Well this is from my point of view of world history, it IS a sign of women oppression. This is directly from text book so don't flame me. "Islamic men believed that women had a power to seduce men and corrupt with their beauty" But all I know about the religion is text book so who gives a woopdie of what I think.

This is back at like cant remember the exact date they enforced it maybe 1235? When all married women had to wear it, Except slaves and the Caliphs concubines, while those who didn't wore it if they were married were considered whores and prostitutes often disowned by their family. Again this is from my knowledge of World History. And men can do it too can't they? Why is it limited? (Seduce that is)

But if its not enforced but devotion then no its not oppression

It's a case by case scenario.

Oppression: When taken to the extreme and EVERY part of them must be covered or ELSE. In these cases, the woman also must be accompanied by a man when going out of the house.

Devotion: When a woman, who follows Islam, chooses to wear it. Which is usually just around their head and body, which allows their face to be seen.

It's all about choice.

Quite right.

It also gives women the option of not being ogled by random men in the street. In a way, it gives them power with their sexuality.
They can choose to only have their husband and family see their hair and/or body.

yes yes well i don't have much of a problem only when their entire face is covered.
I want to see the face of people. Not being able to judge facial expression and the fact that they are unidentifiable kinda rubs me the wrong way.
That said i wouldn't like pull it off or anything, that's my opinion you can all go ahead and wear it for all i care.

Aside from the religious purposes, burkas and hijabs do serve a practical purpose: cover the heat.

It always made me wonder... Why wear something that can cover your face and body in the desert heat? And most of the times its colored black which made the cloth absorb heat much faster! I know that some Islamic countries like Kuwait that are kinda liberalized allow Muslim girls not to wear burka/ hijab. I don't know if its true but it was said by a Kuwaiti princess interviewed in Oprah.

well a lot of Saoudis also have this kind of cloth on their head, don't they? 50 years ago, women in western europe also had their heads covered, and some still have. Not only nuns, but also other, normal grannies.

Depends on the case. Where i live we have a lot of people that are followers of the Islam. Some girls i know have been told by their parents to wear a Headscarf, while most do it on their own. German schools aren't very happy about the headscarf so they are trying to forbid them. =\ I guess it really does just depend on the case. If the woman is okay with it i don't see how it should be wrong. I mean it IS part of their religion.

I wear one.
The reason I wear it is because it's in the Muslim religion.
Also not supposed to let guys see your hair.

Purpose: Neither oppression nor beauty!

Well the way I have understood my religion Islam, with examples from authentic sources such as the Qur'an and the Hadith (Prophetic traditions), is that hijab is an obligation upon every believing (Muslim) woman. However we all certainly are given the choice to obey or disobey the Divine laws. Religion is not to be forced upon as it has everything to do with FAITH and SINCERITY. Nothing can be achieved by force ^.~

Happy Hijabi

FINALYY! A wise believing girl with true points.

Wearing a hijab is not to look beautiful but it's also not an oppression..
It's to be unpretentious as possible.

And also a choice that each and every muslim girls can make. In the middle-east, they use the ISLAM the WRONG way.
And also, don't be mislead by the MEDIA..

BTW !!!
In the holy bible it also states that a Christian woman should cover her head!!

"If a woman does not cover her head, she should have her hair cut off; and if it is a disgrace for a woman to have her hair cut or shaved off, she should cover her head"
the bible 1 Corrinthians 11:3-6

Well .. why not talking about that .. he?
