I wonder why there is a transforming function then... if firing the canon isn't the main purpose that is. It has been a while since I've watched the original series (I watched it for like the 10th time around 1 year ago). But I am old and can't remember yesterday... so perhaps someone can remind me?

I just wanted to add my opinion (which could be wrong) on this topic. It seems to me that ships like the Macross Quarter cant fire their main gun without transforming (as to what reason I dont know why, Maybe the cannon just cant be set firing position while in standard mode). Though, if you've been watching frontier, there's proof that battle 25 can fire its main gun. Of course we havent even seen it transform yet. One other advantage of transforming is the extreme mobility granted for a ship of their size. I could be wrong about this because that statement is really just based on when the Macross Quarter transformed and took out the Vajra Battleship. Especially when it seems like SDF-1 could not move so fast in transformation mode. I just wanted to end with a question: can battle 7 fire its main cannon untransformed? I didnt finish macross 7 yet, let alone see it transform.

Wrong, its the flagship of the SMS military provider services, the flagship of the 25th Colonisation Fleet ( Frontier) is indeed the Battle 25 ( whic is the same battleship type as Battle 7, only that its a little bigger ) , better know as Battle Frontier.

Talking about flagships why isn`t there the ARMD series, they where the first Spacebattlehips line, and were so cool, it could launch like 60 to 70 reaccion missiles at a time, and I think it was better that they changed them for the deadalus and the prometheus in Macross Do You Rember Love?

I believe the ARMD series ships (which would be really old and outdated in Frontier) were only for defending purposes. So, if hostile aliens or giant asteroids came hurling towards earth, they'd act as a line of missile defense. They are likely useless for a colonial fleet like the Frontier.

Well for Frontier they´re indeed outdated, but I I thought this was about all the battleship types through all the macross series.
But the ARMD type were the first space battlecarrier type, so their role was all type of missions, offensive and defensive, after the " Rain of Death" and the first years of the colonitation era their only role was to complete the SDF main battleship type, but in a few years they were stopped being produced, since the new Main battleship types were constructed complete ( I mean with arms ), and the new focus was to construct support carriers like the Ark royal space carrier type.

I think this thread was supposed to be about Macross class ships. But whatever, discuss away!

SDF-1. I am an old man.

Ditto that.

Plus, as has been stated, the original SDF Macross had a reason for transforming. The rest of them just transform because fans think it's cool.

Honestly, I think I also like the design of the SDF Macross best. But that may be childhood bias. Robotech/Macross was my very first experience with anime, unless you count Transformers, so I'm definitely biased.

Oh, I should probably add that I like the Quarter but could never vote for it because watching Bobby STEER a capital ship with a bloody steering wheel may be the stupidest/silliest thing I've ever seen in any Macross series.

I think the only complaint I have with Frontier as a series, so far, is that it's stopped trying to pay lip service to scientific plausability. Still love the show, though.

I grew up watching the SDF-1 in action. So it will always shine above the other warships. Perhaps one reason why they did the other ships transform is for the sheer ability to turn (rotate)a massive energy weapon during battle. In battleship formation they may be restricted to cover a small arch of fire, but if a weapon had a better way to turn, it would be able to spread its shot to cover more enemies. Just a hunch.

ill go with sms macross quarter because of its size, not as large as the other battleship but it makes it more agile w/c is great with assaults.and it looks like more of a overgrown gundam wing with its shield ^^.

Iam personally more of a Macross fan than a Gundam fan, but I have to defend Gundam here.

U sir have probably watched too much SEED, DESTINY, and even WING.... I advise you should go watch sum of the UNIVERSAL CENTREY. UC timeline is much more realistic compare to those crappier alternate universes.

you just repeat what everyone says. can't you have your own opinion?

anyway SDF all the way. plainly because it's the very first battleship i've seen in action for the macross series. although Quarter should be given some credit for being ana ssault mini-battleship. versatile: yes but alcks enough punch to destroy a whole vajra fleet. if SDF were in the macross frontier univers, i'd wonder what it could do to the vajra. hmmmmm.. *scratches head

i was in grade school when i started watching macross. i'd fake stomach cramps just to watch anime on t.v. during mornings.
