The Lost Grounds (喪失の地) are areas in The World that have existed since Fragment. Lost Grounds seem to be synonymous with Sacred Zones (聖地), areas based on the story of the Epitaph of the Twilight. They may or may not be related to the Legendary Lands, areas related to the story of The World. One of the Lost Grounds, The Creator's Room, is also known to be one of Harald's Rooms. The Japanese festival-themed area Δ Hidden Forbidden Festival matches the "Hidden Forbidden" naming pattern most Lost Grounds share, but it is unknown if this area is also a Lost Ground.

"Power- now all to droplets turned in the temple of Arche Koeln."
— Epitaph of Twilight —

Arche Koeln Waterfall (アルケ・ケルン大瀑布) is a field located at Δ Hidden Forbidden Radiation. It is one of the Lost Grounds and its name means "The Land of Origins".

The World R:2 History

When humans were fighting against the "Shadow", this is where a young apprentice magician called forth the gods

Epitaph of Twilight

Arche Koeln lies in the "Land of the Beginning of Beginnings". Within the Temple of Arche Koeln, past its waterfall seal, is the entrance to the path leading to the End of Land. This is also mentioned as the place to which power returns.

History

First Login

Ovan senses Haseo's arrival into The World R:2 from Arche Koeln. He discusses this with Shino, and then leaves to 'greet' him.

.hack//Roots

Arche Koeln serves as a meeting ground for the Twilight Brigade. Ovan, Shino, and later Haseo frequently visit the area to dicuss the affairs of the Guild. At one point Tabby, Sakisaka, and Haseo were teleported here after encountering an active sign created by Tri-Edge. After Ovan's mysterious disappearance, Shino and Haseo spent a great deal of time in the area, doing nothing more then sitting in silence. Tri-Edge's A-shaped Sign is clearly visible on top of one of the bridge supports. After Shino was placed into a coma Tabby began to frequently visit the area for meditation.

When Ovan finally returned to The World he asked Haseo to meet with him here. He informed Haseo that he could meet Tri-Edge in Hulle Granz Cathedral and that they should go there together. Too impatient to wait for Ovan Haseo went ahead by himself and attempted to fight alone. Without Ovan's help Haseo was easily defeated and data drained by Tri-Edge's Twilight Bracelet. Shortly afterwards Phyllo came to the area to meet with Ovan. Ovan revealed to Phyllo the truth about what was going on in The World, a secret Phyllo promised to take to his grave.

.hack//G.U. Games

Arche Koeln is mentioned in the official mythology of The World R:2 on CC Corp's website. Ovan e-mails Haseo asking to meet with him here. When he arrives Ovan dodges Haseo's questions about his activities and tells him where Tri-Edge will appear next. Eager for revenge Haseo prepares to travel to the Hulle Granz Cathedral to meet Tri-Edge, with Ovan promising to meet up with him later.

Much later, Arche Koeln is also one of the Lost Grounds heavily invaded by Cubia Gomoras. Haseo is aided by a returning Alkaid, who brings along the other members of Icolo and some arena fighters.

.hack//CELL

This area only appears once in CELL, in a scene where Midori's manager, Adamas, is tormented by a group of PKs.

Trivia

* The keywords for this Lost Ground in the Japanese release and the English release of Rebirth were Hidden Forbidden Waterfall, but were changed for the American release of Vol.2. The reason for this change is unknown.

Balbol Museum

Balbol Museum (バル・ボル美術館) is a Lost Ground located at ΣHidden Forbidden Exhibition.

After passing through two giant bronze doors decorated with relief images of the eight Phases, a visitor will see a vast facility incorporating almost every known architectural style, including ancient Greek and Roman, medieval Gothic, several Renaissance styles, modern, east Asian, South American, and more. The displays contained within are of archetypes, and look different for each person who views them. For instance, when Kuhn looks at the display for "home", he sees Kanazawa, where he lives and works, Pi sees the fishing village where she grew up, and Endrance sees Mac Anu as it appeared in The World R:1. There are so many exhibits that it would take a lifetime or more to see everything. Beneath the museum is an enormous archive, with hundreds of rows of shelves containing books, pictures, films, and objects of all sorts.

The World R:2 History

The role of the Museum in the R:2 backstory is unknown.

Epitaph of Twilight

The role of the Museum in the Epitaph of Twilight is unknown.

History

G.U. Novels

The archive located beneath the Museum is for Ovan what the Serpent of Lore is for Yata, providing a way for him to access all sorts of information about The World and its inhabitants.

After taking over as leader of Project G.U., Kuhn brings Haseo, Pi, Atoli, and Endrance to the Museum as part of an ultimately successful effort to bring all the Epitaph Users together.

— Epitaph of Twilight —

Briona Gwydion the Dragonbein Range (竜骨山脈ブリューナ・ギデオン) is a Lost Ground located at Θ Hidden Forbidden Dragonbein. In Project .hack, "Dragonbein Range" was translated as Keel Mountains, but the reason for the change is unknown

Briona Gwydion, the Dragonbein Range

Epitaph of the Twilight

In the Epitaph, the Keel Mountains are home to an ape that can speak the language of humans. It asks those who pass by the strange riddle:"What clings to you? Bear it you cannot, accept it you cannot, but hidden it is from you. Recite its name." The answer being one's own name; the name of their shadow. On the other side of the mountains lives a wise dragon named Sheraton.

History

.hack//Roots

Ovan remains in this field for awhile where he is eventually discovered by Azure Kite. Kite fights against Ovan using his Twilight Bracelet but Ovan responds with the AIDA that is sealed inside his left arm. The AIDA wounds Azure Kite, who is forced to retreat. Unknown to both fighters, Midori was watching the entire fight from a hiding place nearby.

The Dragonbein Range in Roots

Coite-Bodher Battlefield

The Coite-Bodher Battlefield (コシュタ・バウア戦場跡) is a Lost Ground located at Θ Hidden Forbidden Battlefield. The area is bathed in perpetual night and is composed of a series of ruins set around a large, glimmering lake. The Backtop City Megin Fi floats above the lake and is visible from everywhere in the area. It is possible to access Megin Fi from Coite Bodhar via Sign Hacking, using the pillars there.

Coite-Bodher Battlefield

The World R:2 Official Story

Coite-Bodher is the site of the final battle between the humans and Mag Mell, battle dragon of the gods. According to the .hack//G.U. Novels, the humans' eight greatest heroes, unable to defeat Mag Mell in direct combat, lured it to the plains of Coite-Bodher, where they had prepared an altar as a trap. When the dragon arrived, they activated the spells on the altar, turning Mag Mell to stone. The victory, however, did not come without a cost. Mag Mell's final scream caused an earthquake, turning the plains to a desolate wasteland, and one of the eight heroes, Gorre, lost his life.

The Chim Chims, who gather energy from the earth, journey here to release it, in a brilliant display of fireworks

Epitaph of the Twilight

The swamp of Coite-Bodher, near the Dividing Forest, is where Saya, Fili, Bith, and Gendor first faced Cubia.

History

.hack//Roots

Coite-Bodher was a refuge of Ovan's when he needed to get away from the stress of running the Twilight Brigade. While he was in the area his left arm suddenly began to react, causing him to briefly black out. When he came to he noticed that a Sign had appeared in the area, and that a Virus Core had been placed into his inventory. Further exploration on the part of the Brigade revealed mysterious pillars that reacted when Virus Cores were brought close. Believing that the platform was a clue to the Key of the Twilight, the Brigade took the Virus Cores they had gathered and tried to activate the altar. Despite the interference of Ender and TaN's Black Ops division, the Brigade succeeded in activating the Sign and opening up a portal to Backtop City Megin Fi. The Brigade fled into the portal with TaN close behind them, not realizing that they were going directly into a trap engineered by Naobi.

.hack//G.U. Games

Bordeaux lures Alkaid to Coite-Bodher saying she has information that could help Sirius, who had been infected by AIDA. She instead, however, PKs Alkaid, causing her to become a Lost One. Haseo arrives on the scene shortly afterwards and holds Alkaid as she fades away.

Haseo later journeys here to access Megin Fi and confront Ovan.

During Cubia's Gomora invasion, Haseo returns to this area to access an Outer Dungeon. Gabi, Bordeaux, Negimaru, Grein, Asta, and IYOTEN all arrive to help him fight, holding off the Gomora while Haseo accesses the dungeon.

.hack//G.U. Novels

In flashbacks, it is shown that while the Twilight Brigade discovered Coite-Bodher, they never managed to reach Megin Fi.

Trivia

* The teleportation ability of the Signs was first revealed in Coite-Bodher, when Haseo, Tabby, and Sakisaka were teleported to Hulle Granz Cathedral after investigating the Sign.
* "Coiste-Bodher" is the chariot Death rides in in Celtic mythology.
* The keywords Θ Hidden Forbidden Battlefield are available in the original .hack games, but they lead to a normal field.
* In the G.U. novels, there are eight pillars, rather than the five in Roots.

Morrigu Barrow Wall

"Do you sense something? Behind that wall?"
— Sakaki —

Morrigu Barrow Wall (モーリー・バロウ城砦) is a field located at Δ Hidden Forbidden Bulwark. It is one of the Lost Grounds.

The World R:2 Official Story

Morrigu Barrow is a great gate blocking passage to heaven. It is protected by the god of judgment, Folset. The One Sin was supposedly used here in an attempt to break the wall.

.hack//G.U.+

After receiving a message from Sakaki, Atoli travels here by herself. After waiting awhile for Sakaki to appear, she is surprised when Azure Kite suddenly warps into the area.

.hack//G.U. Games

Morrigu Barrow Wall is first seen when Yata and Ovan meet there. Ovan asks Yata what he thinks lies beyond the great wall, and Yata responds that nothing does--the area beyond the wall is simply a blind spot to the players where nothing exists. Ovan rebuts that he senses something on the other side, and that the wall is part of a prison. Yata rhetorically questions whether it is the presence on the other side that is being trapped, or if it is the players of The World themselves.

At one point, Piros the 3rd catches word that a new "Tri-Edge" mark has appeared here. He summons Haseo to help him stake out the area, in hopes that Tri-Edge, the culprit who ruined his wall graphic, will return to the scene of the crime. However, after discovering that Piros the 3rd intends to wait for Tri-Edge indefinitely, Haseo gives up and returns to Mac Anu. When he returns later, he finds that Piros is still in the area, having fallen asleep at his computer. While attempting to wake him up, Haseo notices Sakaki and Atoli entering the area. Eavesdropping on their conversation, he realizes that Atoli had been spying on him for Sakaki.

Later, while seeking out the "Tri-Edge" that Haseo is after, Atoli's power leads her to this Lost Ground. She activates the mark on the wall and is transported to a strange area, completely blank except for a stack of coin lockers, that exists outside of the system. Haseo, Kuhn, and Pi are sent by Yata to investigate her disappearance from the bounds of the system, and follow her to the strange area, where they encounter Azure Kite.

Much later, following Corbenik's "Rebirth", Yata invites Haseo here so he can show him a strange anomaly. This anomaly turns out to be Cubia, which begins to flood "The World" with a swarm of Gomora. During the fight against Cubia, Haseo returns here to enter an Outer Dungeon. He is assisted by several Captains from Moon Tree who fend off the Gomora while Haseo opens up the portal to the dungeon.

.hack//G.U. Novels

Morrigu Barrow Wall was a Lost Ground discovered by the Twilight Brigade. From atop the Six Ringing Peaks of Al Fadel, Kuhn sees The World completely encircled by the Wall, with nothing beyond it.

Dark Morrigu Barrow Wall

Dark Morrigu Barrow Wall (裏モーリー・バロウ城砦) is located at Θ Returning Invincible Huge Being. The One Sin and God Eater appear here.

Trivia

* "Morrigu" is the original Irish spelling of the name Morgana, and refers to the Celtic goddess (or trio of goddess - Morrigu, Babd and Macha) of death, battle, and in some cases, life/rebirth.
* A barrow is a type of burial mound, where a body is placed inside of a mound of earth, a popular practice in ancient Ireland. In this case the wall is guarding the graves of the Gods, who were destroyed by the Human's Crest Gun.

Dead World of Indieglut Lugh

Dead World of Indieglut Lugh (死世所 エルディ・ルー) is a field located at Δ Hidden Forbidden Dead Wood. It is one of the Lost Grounds. It is also used for events in The World R:2.

The World R:2 Official Story

Indieglut Lugh is the entrance to the underworld where the God of Death Cernunnos is sealed.

Epitaph of the Twilight

This lake deep in the underworld, with a glowing tree growing in the middle, was undisturbed for thousands of years, until the rebellion of the Crystal Hill.

History

.hack//G.U. Games

Haseo and Atoli are transported here while on an adventure together. Upon reaching the beast statue on a normal field, Atoli says that she hears a sound coming from outside, though Haseo hears nothing. Unwillingly, Haseo follows Atoli around to the source of "the sound". There, behind the treasure room, they find a Sign, which activates, transporting them to Indieglut Lugh. There they encounter Endrance, and an AIDA attempts to attack Atoli. Kuhn arrives at the last minute however and dispatches the AIDA with his avatar Magus.

Later, after losing to Haseo in the Arena, Endrance seals himself in ice beneath the lake. Saku often comes to visit Endrance. Later, when Haseo comes looking for Endrance, he encounters an AIDA-infected Saku, who becomes furious at Haseo for trying to "steal" Endrance, summoning Gorre to fight him. Haseo then uses Skeith and defeats Gorre, eliminating the AIDA. After Gorre's defeat, Endrance is finally set free by Haseo.

.hack//GU+

Haseo is teleported to Indieglut Lugh after getting close to Tri-Edge's sign in Hulle Granz Cathedral. While trying to get his bearings he is approached by Bordeaux who challenges him to a fight. Remembering how easily he defeated her before Haseo accepts, but is shocked when she reveals herself as an AIDA-PC. With the power of her AIDA Bordeaux easily defeats Haseo, but is interruped by Kuhn before she can finish him off. Kuhn summons Avatar Magus and uses its data drain attack to remove the AIDA from Bordeaux's data, temporarily knocking her unconscious and saving Haseo. Pi appears shortly afterwards and warns Haseo about AIDA-PCs.

Indieglut Lugh in GU+

Trivia

* In the Japanese version of the game, this area was called Eldi Lugh, which means "the Firewood of Lugh" in Old Norse (despite Lugh being a Celtic god). This name was translated into a German name of the same meaning in the America localization, "Indieglut", a German word only used in translation of the poem Alvissmal, replacing the equivalent word "Eldi". The reason for this was possibly to make the name "fit in" more with the other German terms in the game, such as Gott Statue and Zeit Statue, which are names that did not exist in the Japanese version, as well as the name of the Lost Ground Arche Koeln.
* An unnamed "dark" variation of Indieglut Lugh serves as the battleground for Cernunnos, Darklord's Shade and True Cernunnos. This Lost Ground is known to be a separate realm by the lack of a Sign.
