She could be! Just because she looks younger doesn't mean she isn't 16! And as for your inappropriate remark, I think it's (of course, hypothetically) disgusting of you to even mention.

you cant believe what everyone says. just cuz their passport says 16 doesnt mean they are. their govt controls what their passport says and china isnt afraid to lie to us to make them seem better. they are a communist country after all that would do anything to make their country look beautiful and unoppressive..

First off people use the edit button in the future it is there for a reason. Secondly there is actually a good reason why the US should complain if china is using underage competitors. When you are younger your body has a lot more cartilage which allows for great flexibility. Which in these sort of competitions is a great advantage. Oh, and the great proof that the girls were all of the proper age that the Olympic comity received were birth certificates made out by the Chinese government. Though really it is fully possible the girls were of competing age. I mean after all the Chinese harvest them at the age of three ship them off to be trained in their national gymnastics program. So, I am sure they do whatever they can to make sure they get the smallest and most agile athletes from the program they possibly can.

Since when does being young and having "more cartilage" got to do with Gymnastics? don't get me wrong, it helps to an extent but up to a certain level. you can't get "more" flexible. and when you consider these people, i'm pretty sure they are trained to that level or flexibility to compete. and the Chinese government might be communism but that doesn't make them desperate since you hinted that the birth certificates could have been faked.

and wtf are you taking about "ship" you make it sound live slavery. it's called recognising talent and giving them the best possible future, perve.

Oh, so you are saying at three years old that you are capable of recognizing talent in a child? If you can you are damn amazing. Oh, did I make it sound like slavery I wonder was that perhaps how I intended it to sound.

Okay flexibility is a large part of gymnastics as I stated. As a baby you are quite literally capable of rolling yourself up into a complete ball, because your bones and joints contain more cartilage. I don't know if you are aware of this or not but cartilage does not break nearly as easily as bone. Any ways as you grow older you lose that cartilage in your bones and joints. So a 16 year old the legal competing age would have much less cartilage than say a 13 year old. Yes, I hinted the birth certificates could of been faked and there is a good probability they were. Not, because they are communist but because they want to win. Same reason why the majority of the men's swimming team for the USA were probably juiced during their training for the Olympics.

I don't believe that the Chinese gymnasts are underage.
I know a lot of Chinese that look really young for their age and are really small.
Hell, I know a 16 yr old that I thought was only 11 or so.
Anyways people are always making fun of how small Chinese girls/guys are, why aren't they accepting it now?
ehh?

Oh yeah i forgot. Its cuz

They lost to China! :D

Its an obvious sign that they can't handle the fact that they lost ...

P.S Kinda off topic but I can't believe a Chinese olympic gymnast is teaching the US gymnasts

not literally 3 years old you..moose. and hah maybe i should rephrase that next time.

oh and thanks for the Science lesson but you obviously missed my point. i said, that it would help but to an extent. and when you are completing for such events as the Olympics, you are trained to that extent. there's no point in competing if you aren't flexible. though not every aspect of gymnastics is about flexibility, it's about training and building yourself up to execute those moves. why do i know this? because you don't see 13 year olds beating someone whose say, from the Russian men's squad?

Everybody wants to win. but damn, breaking the law isn't one of them...and what about the American swimming team?

The American are just jealous of Chinese gymnastics. I mean the American thinks they had to win the gold medal. They should be happy that they got the silver. One of the girl in the American teams falls on the balance beam, so i think it is her fault for making her team 2nd place. Chinese practices gymnastics for over thousands of years, before America was discovered. So those girls really deserved to win the gold.

lol I have heard of this, too. It's true that China has a huge advantage if their competitors are underaged but in the Olympics... it doesn't really matter as long as they have talent! Well... I guess it IS unfair but so what? The results have already been decided!!!

And you can't just believe everything that meets the eye is the truth! And it's good for you to know that the government control's what written in the passport...heck, it's the same in the U.S. too! Why do you imply certain things that are completely judgemental and opinionated? Know the meanings first before you make your 'point'!

Saying the obvious isn't proving anything. Yes, as you grow older your cartilage tend to get weaker but it doesn't deteriorate that quickly over a short amount of time--meaning, 3 years difference isn't that huge of a gap unless injuries are involved. You are able to maintain them with the the right training so you are able to use them for certain abilities such as in gymnastics! The fact that you're saying that being younger makes you a better athletically is wrong because someone who's older with better training could be better than those with limited. Understand? So you're view is slightly wrong!

The question I'm gonna ask is if US did get the gold instead of China, how would this thread come to light? Would we try to question their ages anyway even if they just entered or would they be forgotten.

If USA won, I think more people would feel at ease because technically, I believe some don't think the Chinese were capable of winning the gold considering their argument regarding their 'age' and 'body type'. But there were also contradiction that some were saying that one of the reason why China dominated the way they do is because some of the teammates look young; although, keep in mind that they don't have reliable proof that any of the athletes are actually under aged other than "the nytimes found evidence" which eventually lacked realibility.

Do I believe that more people tend to get biased? Yes.

This thread would still exist (especially since I started it) because this topic/issue was already mentioned before and after the pre-eliminary rounds. The purpose of this thread was to get opinions from other people because it's borderline controversial. I, personally, believed that it was unfair that some were judging the Chinese women's gymnastic team by how 'young they looked' and that they didn't look 16 rather than how talented, determined, and (eventually) well-deserved gold medalist they were. Instead of celebrating a countries accomplisment in this athletic event, I thought some (example: the article on the first page) were being sharing their opinions in a very rude, disrespectful, prejudice, and biased way that it was almost offending to me, a Olympic and gymnastics fan.

In addition, because China won the gold the more interest people got with this issue regarding their Age Qualification. I, in the other hand, remain optimistic and rather realistic with the possibilities that these girls are actually of Age Qualificiation; although, I also wanted to hear other perspectives.

omg a couple of kids beat 20 year olds.
Posted 8/13/08
Lol who cares the olympics are boring if you didn't put your country's best athletes to compete in my opinion. These chinese kids were trained since the age of like 3 (I could be exagerrating) so they should beat USA in my opinion they've been doing it for as long as they can remember.
