When I started watching Xam'd, for some reason I kept being reminded of Kure-nai...then I began to notice...

1) The animation style is very similar
2) The main male characters in both series had some kind of strange weapon on their right arm
3) The main female friends (Haru Nishimura of Xam'd and Yuuno Houzuki of Kure-nai) both not only look alike but are also skilled in the martial arts
4) Both of the main female bosses have similar names (Shuu Benikawa of Xam'd and Benika Juuzawa of Kure-nai)

I wonder why that is...

good comparison, but facts prove they are unrelated, by directer, writer/artist, Studio who produced it...

also like most people may have noticed close comparison with Xamd would be Eureka SeveN... same studio

my un-researched guess - but then again the similarities may exist between the two show u talked about would be because of modernization of anime/animation technology, where now they try to show more movement in the characters which is visible in both anime, also the character details u decribed are visible in more then just anime there are several girls like Yuuno, and haru with similar look, maybe not skills, my ex would be Sherly, from Code Geass she kinda looks like Haru at some points, as for power on hand many male leads had similar situations.

Anyways i love ur comparison, i just missed it all, even haveing watched Kure-nai just recently... both good anime.

I wouldn't really think too much on those similarities since those similarities aren't at all that similar either.
1) Animation I do think Kurenai has more level of detail in terms of this, since detail was especially important, so I would actually give more props to Kurenai on this besides this type of animation isn't strange with the new animes that do come out.
2) Main difference is Akiyuki's weapon is just embedded on his right arm but it basically affects his entire body and its alive. Shinkuro's weapon is just a strange weapon implanted onto him that has no will but when he does use it he does go berserk.
3) No doubt about similar looks and background but face it Yuuno's more skilled and she actually helped in the training of Shinkuro. Akiyuki looks like he was never interested in martial arts.
4) Similar names but different occupations but both are bad ass.

Anyways I don't think the similarities or rather dis-similarities actually have any deep meaning that connect the show probably just coincidence, after all you have to consider that both shows are shounen/action well the original basis of Kurenai was that anyways but Xam'd seems to be shounen/action either way genre roots are related. Honestly if you look hard enough or actually not that hard you'd be able to see similarities between shows. For example Xam'd has even more similarities with Eureka Seven and The Last Exile than Kurenai.

If you actually look very carefully, you can tell the animation styles are completely dissimilar. I agree they both employ more recent animation techniques and technologies, but personally I think they were using different software.

Kurenai has an almost cell shaded appearance to it. The faces lack the typical anime expressiveness but have slightly more detail when still. The colors are more vibrant and the movements were also somewhat strange for anime, as if it was half done by CG.

Xam'd, however, was done by Bones, and has the characteristics of all Bones anime. They adopt a more traditional "anime look" for their characters, but emphasize the actions and high energy moments in the show. Bones always does very high quality animation, without CG dimensional models. However such high quality animation generally also ups production costs by a fair bit. So they adopted a different technique, especially for their more recent anime. They carefully emphasize selective actions and then pay a great deal of attention to details in those particular moments. It's particularly apparent in Soul Eater. Xam'd shares the same style.

Bone has mastered the process of perspective. Some animes suffer from showing things from less engaging perspectives and not properly detailing critical moments that could use it. I don't know who Bones has directing the art, but that person is brilliant.

To be honest, I find Kurenai a pale comparison to Xam'd. Kurenai was pretty good, but Xam'd so far has so much more dimension in story depth, characters and setting. You can find similarities between any two fictional stories. It generally doesn't mean anything.

then i'll say it for you. It's just a coincidence. If you read the posts above, they are really detailed views on the dissimilarities which for the most part prove to be true.

don't mean to be rude but i don't see anything similar to kure nai, first i think that the animation studio used the same style used in eureka 7 and that they may have watch nausica right before the concept stage but nothing i see even hints at kurenai

ok after looking abit closer at what was said i have to agree with somethings but not all

1) the animation style does not appear similar to me at all again way more like eureka 7(bones is the studio that does Xam'd as well)
2) I'll give you the right arm thing except in kure nai the animation he uses it but once or twice and for a few seconds at a time
3) This is actually dead on except in kure nai she helps to train him
4) The names sound similar but charaters are completly different

yeah again sorry if i sound rude, i don't mean to. it's just the way i explain things

Your statement: They are simular

My answer: Its following the general formula that has worked before. When humans like something they dont give a crap how many times its redone as long as it is slightly different they will enjoy it just the same.
