*another poll by me. plz excuse my utter boredom*

so. the title says all. why do you think Gintama is not so well known than the other shounen anime i will not mention?

as far as i know for certain, Gintama is published in Shounen JUMP along with the other BIG shounen names, and i can say most of my Japanese online friend knew the series, if not loving it. but i get the "What's Gintama?" reply when i listed out my favorite anime to someone in real life a.k.a another local anime fan. i mean, what can be the difference that made Gintama so unknown outside Japan.

IMO, it's too extreme. we're talking about butt jokes, poop jokes, S+M reference, foul language, blood scenes.. not to mention the massive Japanese cultural reference.

well, that's my say. what about you guys?

on the side note, what can we do to make this anime shared the same glory as other shounen titles? recommendations left and right?

I don't think the major problem is that it's too extreme...although now that I think about it, some of the jokes are really inappropriate, hilariously so. But there are quite a few popular shows here that are approximately as extreme or more extreme, such as South Park and Family Guy. And while there are a lot of Japanese cultural references, I don't think it's off-putting, it's just that if you don't understand it, that piece of the humor goes over your head, but it's packed with other jokes, including universal ones like potty humor. Plus I think the subbers do a great job of explaining the references, at least a sufficient amount that I'm laughing my ass off during every episode.

I'm not really sure why it's not as popular as some other anime, since it's the best ever. I think it might be a combination of being overshadowed by other anime series like Bleach and Naruto, and that it's a little hard to begin watching because the first episodes of the anime aren't as entertaining as later episodes. I think you have to get to around 5 or so before you get to the greatness. Personally, I almost stopped watching before then, but I'm so glad that I didn't! They're not bad episodes, and interestingly, rewatching the episodes, it just seems that they're much funnier after you know the characters better.

I'm glad it's popular in Japan, Gintama is so awesome that it should be popular everywhere.

I dun even think it is too extreme... Compared to other extreme violence and soft porn in other manga and anime... It is still viewable for kids...

I think other manga and anime like One Piece, Naruto and Bleach had more publicity than other series. That is my point of view in my country. I do believe that it is very popular in Japan, so I have no issues with that.

In some aspects, I rather Gintama to be unpopular so that it won't be licenced and ended up unable to view in sites like cruncyroll. We know it is a good anime and manga in our hearts. In my country, some particuler distributor got the licensing and sell orignal copies with f***ed up subs, not so updated episodes. There was once I saw Basilisk for sale but I didn't buy it until the week after when I got time to visit many DVD shops, the series wasn't for sale. WHY? Izzit too violent for audiences? If so dun even bother to get the licensing and keep it for yaself!

i dunno maybe the ep. 1 and 2 cause i tried gintama before and didn't get into to it until a few weeks ago when i was watching youtube and it had a really funny part. so maybe everyone just thinks of gintama as boring or never heard of it,
what gintama needs is to sign with a big company or the thought of it being licensed is scary but that would raise it too maybe to bandai or sumthing else that's big cause i know this could be a good series for humor viewers just not alot of people willing to try... just like alive: the final evolution thank god an anime is going out on it XD i'm so excited woo! oh by the way it's really bloody and has themes like death and stuff, i need something to fill up the empty space where death note left off and not that bull code le... w/e clamp made it too much like death note that i don't want to watch it

MECHA!!!
Gintama doesn't have one (except in OVA)
Oi, don't misunderstand, I hate mechas (except knightmares in Code Geass).
That's one of the reasons why Gintama is not very popular where I live, because most people who watch animes here are really just going for mecha - I don't know if that reason is applied to other contries or not though......(damn, this is why they only sell things from anime that has mecha here.....)

Personally, when I first watched Gintama, I was rather mad of why it isn't popular and all of my friends just hang questionmarks on their faces when I ask them if they know Gintama....(they just don't know suc good anime existed TT)

But right now I don't care if GIntama is popular or not because if it gets too popular...might be licensed.

Well it's rated 16+ and I guess the young brats who like narutos and bleach "humor" are of course immature enough to grasp gintamas humour; this is the only anime I know that make jokes about hemmoroides, for example.

The first few episodes are slow, so people lose interest

Yeah, I agree. I was also not so interested when I saw the first two episode but since I was so bored and too lazy to check other animes out, I kept on watching. And I'm sooo glad i did!
So if I wanna convince someone to watch gintama, I'd just reccomend them one of the funniest episodes to watch first!

The first few episodes weren't really funny. I even stopped watching for a while. When I started watching again, it was hilarious, and I got addicted to it. Gintama humor relies heavily on parodies so it doesn't make sense to those who don't watch a lot of anime.

The first few episodes arn't very good, so some might be put off. Others might not like it because Gintama has no obvious plot, some people seem to get really hung up on that.

I don't know.. maybe it's humour is pretty outlandish. It seems to only work for few people that get that sort of humour...

When i recommend Gintama to my friends I usally show small video clips of the funniest moments from youtube first. So that they wun be bored by boring episodes. Although I find almost all episodes entertaining.
