Whatever. Let's just say I'm glad it's not popular enough for the fans to be called "gintards". <_<
And remember: being famous doesn't neccessarily mean being any good. In these days and age it's quite the opposite!

I think the reason why it's quite underrated in the West is due to most of the reasons listed in the poll: overshadowed by other anime; a lot of Japanese oriented jokes; crude humor; not enough recommendation; and, the fact that the story get's better when you actually go DEEPER into the series (it's not an instant hooker) .

There is also difference in preference for the type of plot-line in Japan compared to the West (the latter in which there are a lot of younger fans more into the typical 'attractive hero, solid plot-line, kick-ass scenes all the way through'' type manga as they are the quickest to get into).

I asked my Japanese friend about why she feels it's so underrated outside Japan, and she said that there is also the possibility that it's because Japan broadcasts the episodes weekly on TV, and releases the chapters weekly- you are more exposed to it there, so it's easier to get into (and as far as I know, Gintama is so popular that when they stopped the anime for a year, older, but good episodes of Gintama, "Yorinuki Gintama", were broadcasted instead weekly until the new anime made a comeback). So, aside from the obvious Japanese oriented jokes, exposure and the easier accessibility to Gintama anime and manga, made it be recognised for its true epicness. XD

Personally, the thing about Gintama I love so much, is how it doesn't drag things out too much, especially serious arcs. The longest arc that I know of, is the Yoshiwara arc where it's only 18 chapters long - I'm very impressed by Sorachi-sensei's ability to keep everything succint. Oh, not to mention how there are none of those uber-long training arcs which most shounen manga have. I love how the mangaka shows all of the cliches and parodies of various demographics of manga and such. The fact that Sorachi-sensei's aware of all of the tropes makes Gintama actually an unpredictable series. Of course there are inevitable clashes between the main antagonists (<3 Takasugi and Kamui <3) and Gin-chan but still, how, when and the aftermath - anything could happen.

That said, I spent half of my childhood in Japan though (I'm not Japanese) and thus, I've been exposed to Japanese culture all of my life, so I can basically understand the Gintama humour. Still, even if you don't get some references, the tsukkomi-style comedy and universal jokes are enough for anyone to enjoy the awesome manga it is.

I think that all the hints to other mangas or real-life persons which are not (too well) known outside of Japan play a major role in it's lack of popularity.
And maybe the fact that some puns and jokes just don't translate.

Well I refused to read it at first because the first 3 pages of the manga were so boring.
I'm just glad that I read it 2 years later anyway.

when in your country you ask about comedy anime and some stupid says: naruto, dragon ball, one piece, avatar, and many ecchi animes that are not funny

Or when you ask about the top 5 manga in japan and some say Gin what, yeah but they can talk you about crap like gravion, zetsuboo sensei, and bla bla

I agree with a lot of what Purely Sadistic said...there so many inside referred jokes and puns thats hard for me to keep up but thanks to very good fansubs when it first came out that I tottaly got into its jokes five years ago.

I just love unrestrictive the expressions in Gintama.

I love how the production deals with when the manga was lagging behind the anime.I basically introduced Gintama to my anime club and some slowly started to really like this wacky anime.

I think this anime is not for everyone , its not mainstream ,but they sure miss a really fun anime if they arent into Gintama.

I think this is the only anime I can watch over and over and laugh at the same joke over and over again.

Here in Perth, it's not that popular. My other friend and I know about it but it seems to be in another dimension. Not everyone knows about it like I know Beelzebub.
In my manga shop that I go to (Empire Toys), they do not sell it there nor in other shops.
