nice to see someone who agrees, i accidentally said something bad on a VK forum and now im getting bitched by just about every f*cking fangirl there, i was ok with it before the anime was produced though but after the anime started, i hated it.......

unpopular in america? well, give it time. there are only 7 volumes out in america right now. it'll probably get popular on its own. or not. the humor is something you have to get used to. kids probably wouldn't understand it anyway.

^ true, true. there are a lot of mature jokes in gintama, hence the older teens rating. i read some of the manga and i think some of the material got censored in the anime because of sexual references. ^^;; even with the censor, the anime still got taken off prime time, right? but kids are watching a lot of weird stuff nowadays anyway... ah, what has society come to?

most of my friends don't like mecha and super-natural things. They rarely watch anime at all :[

I think it's because a lot of it's parodies are about other anime and though most of them are about the most poular ones, there's still some that people may not get. Also the jokes are a little bit 'too extreme'. XP

And sadly, no one I know knows Gintama. TT-TT

Gintama does have an underlying plot. The basic plot is about Gintama's past as a samurai who defending his country against the Amanto but after spilling soo much blood subsequently gave up that lifestyle. He then meets Shinpachi and Kagura through a chain of events and enjoys life as Do-anything-for hire. The series is a slice-of-life comedy that at certain episode numbers continues the plot with really extreme emotional and violent scenes. Afterwards it them jumps back into the CRAZY no holds bar comedy that we all love in Gintama. At the rate they are going Gintama may take 300+ episodes or more to be finished. I admit I was like everyone else, I didn't like Gintama much after episode 1-2 but I was bored so I continued to watch it. When I reached episode 30 I realized this was the funniest cartoon show (since Family Guy and probably even more so in my opinion) I had seen to date. I believe they set the bar so high that we may find some episodes that come out later on not able to compare with previous ones. Either way I love the series and wouldn't mind buying the DVD just to spread the word. So yeah if it get licensed say goodbye to crunchyroll but I say hello world we introduce to you the comedy that is Gintama.

At least there's a silver lining to all of this. If it was more well-known it'd invariably get licensed. Though it blows that Gintama deserves way more attention and praise, it's nice that it won't be taken away from those who love it.

1) As pointed out, it's full of inside jokes and cultural references that casual viewers won't get. You have to be familiar with a lot of japanese entertainment and history to find Gintama entertaining. The fact that it looks like a regular shounen deal at first glance is misleading so people who tune in for that reason easily get turned off if they don't have the perseverance to keep watching and get to the good stuff. Those who are looking forward to a shounen anime would probably get disappointed, because while Gintama has shounen elements and ocassional action, it's mostly comedy and slice-of-life.

2) It's heavily character-driven - meaning, a lot of the jokes are running gags derived from character traits (ie, Katsura's habit of refuting his nickname, Sougo's sadism, etc) which is why the first few episodes don't really make sense, it's not funny if you don't know the characters. A lot of people including myself didn't really like the first two eps because of the lack of context. The show gets funnier as you watch more because you understand the world of Gintama better. The fact that it starts the way it does makes me think the creators of the anime mostly targeted devoted readers of Gintama for it's audience.

3) The humour is hit-or-miss depending on the viewer. Some people like offbeat randomness and obscure references and parody. Other people like toilet humour. Gintama has both but more of the former, which is a quality that is prone to having a smaller fanbase than something that is mostly slapstick comedy.

Well I live in England and somehow managed to get my hands on the first manga volume of Gintama. Let me tell you, they only put the really popular stuff out on the shelf here. In my local book store there is just one small shelf dedicated to manga, if Gintama made it to that small bookshelf then I think there should be no doubt of it's popularity.
Other than that I have to admit that I am just a 'kid', a point you lot seem to be empathsising a lot on and I love Gintama and have been watching it for over a year. I may not get all the anime related jokes but I still find Gintama funny. I'm sure there are plenty more young people out there who love and watch this series, don't rule us out just yet! We may be from the naruto generation (yeah I do watch and read it :P) but that doesn't mean we don't enjoy the other weird stuff out there as well.

It's not unpopular, just less popular than some others; and I think it's because it's episodic, there's no current plot in the story. I'm not even sure if they want to take back the Earth (Japan) from Amantos or not.
