i think its cuz it's hard to understand with all the parodies

plus you kind of have to understand the character's personalities for some gags to work out, which some people might not remember cuz their personalities weren't exactly 'defined' until later.

and its pretty weird and random.

theres not really a lot of female sex appeal for a shounen either. i think it contains more yaoi (malexmale) actually.

But It has such original gags so i love watching it anyway XD

I think it's because Gintama has sooo many parodies that a normal person (who hasn't seen a lot of animes) wouldn't really understand, and just think, "uh, okay, is that supposed to be funny?" when it's freaking hilarious.

Another is that... they aren't dubbed (which I think is good). Naruto, Bleach, and the like are pretty popular since they are being dubbed in other languages, unlike Gintama that only has the manga and the anime--- and not to mention aside from Crunchyroll, the subs are pretty hard to find now, and if you do--- they usually suck (like the voices and the character's actions are wayyy off from each other).

There's so many reasons why Gintama might be unpopular, but hey. I think Gintama is an irreplacable, awesome anime that should go on for years to come.

because the first few episodes are kind of slow... plus there are many references to Japanese culture and other well known animes that some people might not get; hence, it wouldn't be funny to them
I personally love Gintama, and I try my best to get the jokes
The first few episodes did kind of drive me away for a few weeks, but I kept watching on lazy weekend afternoon and before I knew it, I fell in love with the anime

*another poll by me. plz excuse my utter boredom*

so. the title says all. why do you think Gintama is not so well known than the other shounen anime i will not mention?

as far as i know for certain, Gintama is published in Shounen JUMP along with the other BIG shounen names, and i can say most of my Japanese online friend knew the series, if not loving it. but i get the "What's Gintama?" reply when i listed out my favorite anime to someone in real life a.k.a another local anime fan. i mean, what can be the difference that made Gintama so unknown outside Japan.

IMO, it's too extreme. we're talking about butt jokes, poop jokes, S+M reference, foul language, blood scenes.. not to mention the massive Japanese cultural reference.

well, that's my say. what about you guys?

on the side note, what can we do to make this anime shared the same glory as other shounen titles? recommendations left and right?

I do believe Gintama is as popular as Bleach in Japan.

I think it's bcoz of the lack of publicity...esp here in my country. Without the anime websites, i'll miss one heck of a great anime...so thanks!

Because there's so many parodies that you only realise if you watch too much anime.
for people starting to watch anime, Gintama is not their kind of shows. Let them mingle in anime for long then after that only they can appreciate Gintama fully.

But its a blessing in disguise. Too popular and there'll be lisence and stupid dubbing (not that i insinuating that dubbing is stupid, its just that there's too many jokes and pun will lose its meaning in dubbing)

I am pretty sure its that alot of (stupid) people don't get their humor. And something else might be that somtimes earlier episode characters and situations pop up in newer episodes so if the person has just joined in it may be hard to understand.

I don't think people get the humor so much and its more popular in Japan.
It's not so publicised like Bleach or Naruto. But Gintama is an awesome anime <3

1. Not many ppl know it. Never been introduced to it.

Gintama doesn't have exceptionally good-looking chara's, no flashy animation, high-levels of action animated only occationally for major arcs, & quite nonsense storyline most of the time...
These were why i never wanted to watch Gintama before.

Gintama is like Chinese food, you have to try it to like it, though it might look exotic/weird to begin with.
Also, there are soo many layers/elements to Gintama other than humor. you have to watch a few eps before you can fully apprietiate it.

Basically, you have to tie you frd in a chair & force them to watch the funniest/most well-animated (arcs) eps. and they'll like it in the end (that's how i got introduced to the series :P)

2. Nonsense humor.

many toilet jokes, perv jokes, parodies....personally i think they are clever & outrageously funny, while some ppl think it's too extreme & might be bit of a turn-off

3. No continuous storyline

Yes, the arcs are awesome, but way too few & way too short. Rest of the series are just random funny stories stuff in here & there. ppl won't be "hooked" onto a storyline to keep them watching. they can just "pop-in" once in a while, watch it when they feel like it. doesn't matter if they lose a few eps, most of the eps are not related anyways.

it's not like Naruto...sasuke needs to get revenge, Naruto comes looking for him... Sasuke is going to fight Itachi has always been the "pull" for the readers.

Gintama needs a central storyline.

4. Pretty chara's lacking

like i've mentioned before. Viewers are mostly shallow...we like things that are VISUALLY stimulating
Gintama really lacks hot guys & pretty girls as banners. it requires reader to dig a little deeper, know the story & see the chara's grow (i would nvr thought Kagura is such an awesome chara! such a cutie-pie too!!). only then do you see how awesome each & every single one of them are (esp. Gin-san! Huuuge love~)

if Gintama has a line of hot guys like Reborn & Bleach, its popularity would skyrocket

5. and....because the animator slacks off some times >.>....
Doing it quite shamelessly too, lool

better animation, actions, will attract more viewers.

Gintama is a comedy shonen. That's probably why. But it sells DVDs and the manga ranks high so that is all I care about.

Gintama has so many Japanese references that people subbing it have to post the references. How in the world would the dubbers be able to do that. Not to mention as someone stated before they parody all kinds of anime and the entire series is based of Japanese history. To be outside of Japan and understand this show would mean you would have to an anime fan (which everyone that watches online more or less would be) or someone with excellent knowledge on Japanese culture and anime (hence an anime fan). Mainstream anime like Naruto and Bleach don't require that kind of knowledge and you can just watch them while the show explains what you need to know without any in depth knowledge. If Gintama is ever dubbed I would be incredibly surprised but I doubt it would ever hit the mainstream in English (also its not suitable for all audiences in the States, especially with the stupid censor laws). Good news is it's one of the most popular manga/anime in Japan so they will keep making more:D
