Sally, the Witch in 1966 is seen as the first magical girl anime.

without that there would be no shugo chara/ ect. because they kept building up on mahō shōjo after that.

Yeah, Sally the Witch was the first magical girl anime, but the genre didn't really gain the popularity it knows today until Sailor Moon came out in 1992. It's kinda a shallow anime, but Sailor Moon really opened a lot of doors in the Shojou genre.

Early mahoushoujo anime also focused a lot on girls using their powers for their own gain, or to just have fun. I guess Shugo Chara! is also similar to these early magical girl anime series, as, even though they do fight the X Eggs, their magical powers are often used for personal reasons.

Sailor Moon was also the first magical girl anime where the characters themselves transformed. I remember reading in one of the Sailor Moon artbooks another manga-ka wrote how jealous they were that Naoko Takeuchi had got the idea first ^ ^

Though, having boys transform in a mahoushoujo series (with a flashy henshin sequence) is a relatively new concept (it seems) I mean, I have seen boys with magical powers in manga/anime before... but the first time it was really prominent was Kamichama Karin and then, Shugo Chara! Unless anyone knows of any earlier examples?

I can't remember very well, but I THINK Mamoru/Darien from Sailor Moon had maybe one Shiny Transformation Scene himself...
