I like both 2D and 3D fighters. To me, an example of a good 3D fighting game is Rival Schools for PS1.

I honestly like both. For 2d fighters the vs series and the KoF games are pure awesome for fast pace. the guilty gears have too many technical aspects that aren't properly explained enough that are necessary to learn to be remotely successful.
As far as earlier comments about tekken and soulcalibur being button masher games that's completely false. just because YOU button mash when you play dosen't mean that it's a button masher game. The combos in those games range from moderate to difficult especially in tekken with 10 string combos or those mutant super people(lol) who can pull off king's throw combos

2D fighter any day. You mess up once and its over. Melty Blood, BlazBlue, Mugen(actual balance characters).

I hate 3d fighting because of the 8 directional movements, not that it is a bad aspect but i hate that aspect >_>

2D all the way. I still play those type of games more than the 3D ones.

3D fighters, easily. 8 way run, dimension and depth, and realism. 2D may bring nostalgia to players, but 3D adds to immersion and overall enjoyment of the game.

The Dead or Alive games stand to be the most fluid fighter I have ever played, therefore:

3D>2D in my honest opinion.

Hm, I've played my share of both kinds, but I still prefer 2-D Fighters to this day.

I prefer the 2D fighters. They hold nostalgia and can be challenging. I love that in any game.

Wait, who said Guilty Gear isn't challenging? XD

The game is exceptionally well-made and fine-tuned to very high degrees, so unless you can RC and FRC like nobody's business, no, the game is actually pretty damn demanding.

All said, while I love certain 3D fighters (it hurts being one of the few VF fans), 2D fighters just have infinitely more character and style. Street Fighter always reigns supreme in my eyes, and the sheer fun and variety of KoF will forever make me a fan.
