Chapter 1 - Meet Kira Matsume
** Spoiler Alert!!! click to hide or show** Kira was on her way to school on the last day of the school year, when she saw one of her brother's favorite birds, a nuthatch. He absolutely loved them! So she quickly and quietly got out her camera and took a very good, close up pic of it. Just as she snapped the picture, it flew off in the direction of the school. She smiled, looked around to see if there were any more, then headed for the school.
She was turning the corner to the school, when she stopped short. She looked at four tall, snobby looking boys standing there at the gate, one of which she knew all too well. His name was Travis Smith. He was the leader of a school gang that always used to pick on Kira when she first arrived to the US, but now, they just husled her for some money, every once in a great while. Kira walked up to them behind some bushes, but as soon as she tried to make her way past them, they saw her.
"There she is, boss!" one of the thugs said to Travis. Travis smirked.
"Well, don't just stand there, ya dimwits, get her!" he barked.
Kira knew she was in trouble now, and no way out! Well, almost no way. Kira quickly spotted an alley not too far from where she was. She knew that she was faster than those goons, so she booked it for the alley.
She was running pretty fast, for she was scared not to slow down or the goons would catch her. They were right on her heels now, so if she slowed down even a little, they would get her. She turned a corner as they were about to get her, and all three ran into the wall. She smiled at her smarts, when she realized that this road might be a dead end, too. She skidded to a halt before she hit the concrete wall. At the rate she had been going, she would have run smack-dab into that wall. She sighed and wiped her forehead, but she wasn't safe just yet. She was now lost and helpless in one of the alleys beside the school. She thought to herself that she would never get out, until she saw another alleyway. She didn't think it was a good idea, but then again, it was better than running back towards the boys who wanted to get her. So she ran into the unknown alley.
Running through the back alley, she thought about where it led and how she was going to get to first period on time. She kept thinking to herself that she was going to be late.
"God, why did I have to take this godforsaken alleyway?" She said to herself, but as soon as she said it, the alley opened up and She saw light. She ran faster and found that she was right back where she started, only on the opposite side of the school. She looked around, looking for Travis and his gang of goons. When she saw that they weren't there, she gave a little leap of joy and ran to the gate of the school, just as it was closing. She got inside alright, but she was late, so she was given a demerit. She sighed and headed off to class, sulking the whole way about the demerit. She told herself that she would tell the principal why she was always late, but knew that she was never going to be taken seriously, so she ran to find her friends.
She was walking in the hallway when her friend Maddie ran up to her. Maddie wasn't like other girls, she was a punk. Kira smiled and the two of them headed for first class. Maddie ran beside Kira, trying to keep up with her.
"Hey, Kira! Wait up!" she said. Kira stopped and turned to her.
"What is it, Maddie?" she asked innocently. Maddie was out of breath, but spoke clearly.
"They bothered you again, didn't they, Kira." She had hit the nail on the head. Kira winced as if she had been hit. Maddie wasn't stupid. Underneath that punky exterior was some major brainage. She wasn't one of those girls who were so stupid they'd believe a spaceship was parked infront of the school. Kira just nodded. Maddie sighed a heavy sigh. She knew Kira couldn't avoid them, but she had to find a way to get to school without running into them. Maddie smiled.
"Next time, Kira, Let ME take care of them, ok?" Kira smiled and nodded.
"Next time, Maddie, wait at the gate so I don't run into them at all." she said defiantly. Maddie shruged.
"Whatever you say, Kira," She said. Kira smiled and the two of them headed for their first class, Biology. They only had seconds to get there, so Kira and Maddie ran straight through the abandoned hallway. They were always the first ones there. The teacher had just shown up, so she let them in and Kira and Maddie went to take their seats in the back. They brought out their home work and checked each other's work. Just as they had gotten done, they went up and showed the teacher. She smiled and nodded. Kira and Maddie smiled at each other and went back to their seats. Just as they sat down, the first bell rang. All of the kids began to file in, a few at a time.
As the kids were walking in, Kira noticed someone else walking with them. It was a teacher, but he looked oddly familiar. That's when she noticed who he was. It was the principal. Kira leaned over to Maddie.
"What's the principal doing here?" She whispered to her. Maddie looked up to see Kira was right. She leaned over to Kira.
"I don't know," she whispered back, "Maybe he's here to give us the exam." Kira shook her head.
"I doubt it," she said. Just then the principal looked at Kira and Maddie with intense eyes. The girls quickly stopped talking and went back to their work. The principal looked away. Maddie and Kira looked at each other and went back to work. Then, the teacher got up and went to talk to the principal. Maddie and Kira couldn't hear what they were saying, but they knew it wasn't just a friendly hello. Then the teacher and the principal walked outside together. Maddie looked at Kira.
"What do you think they are talking about?" Maddie asked.
"I don't know, Maddie," Kira replied, looking back at Maddie, "But whatever it is, it's not good."
And she was right, too. A few minutes later, the teachers came back in. The principal looked at Kira and Maddie. The girls shivered. Then the teacher walked up to them and told them that they were needed in the principal's office. The girls looked at each other. Maddie just shrugged and Kira looked back at the teacher.
"Why?" she asked. The teacher just stood there and told her again that she was needed in the office. Kira raised an eyebrow and looked back at Maddie, who just shrugged again. So she said that she would be there, then she and Maddie got their stuff together and followed the principal out of the room.
Maddie and Kira followed the principal out of the room and to the office, but they still had no idea what was going on. They looked at each other, but neither had an idea what to do. They looked back at the principal, who all this time had been quiet and had his back turned to them. When he did turn to them, they hung their head as if they had done something wrong. When he turned back around, Maddie and Kira would exchange glances and return to following him. They finally got to the office and the sercetary was there waiting. She put on a smile and said hello to the principal, but the principal just walked right by her and into his office. Kira and Maddie looked at each other, then looked back at the secretary. She just smiled and went back to her work. Kira and Maddie sat down on the bench and waited for their turn to go in. The secretary looked up at them and said,
"You guys can go in, you know. You're the only appointment he has today." Kira and Maddie looked at the secretary, then at each other. They got up and walked to the door. Maddie was about to open it, when the handle turned from the other side. Maddie looked back at Kira, but Kira said nothing, so Maddie stepped back and let the door open on it's own. Out walked the principal, still looking like he wanted to kill someone. He grabbed Kira and Maddie by the arm and dragged them into his office. The girls struggled, but nothing they did made him loosen his grip.
The principal dragged the girls into his office and shoved them into the chairs on the opposite side of his desk, which wasn't very organized. There were coffee stains on the paper's he was working on, and there were food crumbs all over the place. Kira was disgusted, but Maddie didn't care. She was looking directly at the principal, but he wasn't looking at her. He was looking at the wall. He then spoke in a voice that soundeed as sly as a snake hiss.
"You two are in a load of trouble, " he said, looking at them, " Kira and Maddie." Kira shuddered. She hated his voice.
"What did we do, sir?" Maddie asked modestly, not taking her eyes off of him. He smiled slyly.
"I have been getting complaints from a few boys that Kira has been taunting them then leading them down alleys and getting them lost. I disapprove this behavoir, Kira, and Maddie, you have been taunting other girls and saying that you would be better off with out them. That sounds like a threat to me. Can either of you recall these events?" Kira and Maddie just looked at him. he had the right idea, but the wrong perspective. Kira stood up. Maddie just looked at him.
"Sir, I can recall that these boys followed me into the alleys, but I will assure you, I have not been taunting them, not at all!" she stated defiantly. She was about to slam her hands on desk, when Maddie grabbed her hand. She then stood up.
"Sir, why are you doing this?" she asked. She just wanted to get to the point and get out as fast as she could. Kira felt this, and she, too, wanted to get out as fast as she could. The principal's office was creepy and gross. He smiled again. Kira was getting creeped out by it.
"I just wanted to give you girls the punishment you deserve, that's all," he said, but both girls knew something else was up.
Even though they knew, they didn't ask anymore questions, so they got their punishment, which was garden work out front, and left.
They ran back to class, but by the time they got to the classroom, the bell rang and all of the kids were filing out again. They tried to run through the mass of kids, but they were having a hard time.
"NO!!!" they both cried and ran into the classroom. They finally got in and asked if they could take their exam, which they knew they had missed. The teacher smiled and said they could, so they sat there for the next period and took their Biology exam. After their exam, they left the building, said goodbye, parted ways, and ran straight home. Kira was already late for the plane back to Osaka, and she knew her dad would want an explination for it, but she didn't have that kind of time. She just wanted to get home before...
She felt a hand come down hard on her shoulder. She stopped immediately. She knew who it was. She turned around to see, staring at her with cold black eyes, was the principal. He hadn't gotten to Maddie, but she was not as fast as Maddie, so she got caught. She hit her heel on the ground and looked back up at him. His eyes were starting to creep her out. He smiled that evil smile. Whern he talked though, it wasn't sharp, but soft, like he was talking to his own daughter.
"Did you forget already? You need to stay and do those chores I told you to do." Kira struggled to get free, but no luck.
"C'mon, Sir. It's the end of the school year, and I have to catch a plane to Osaka by 6:30 pm, or I will be stuck here this summer!" she pleaded.
That's when he did something that just plain scared her. He laughed. The guy laughed! He was laughing the most evil laugh and she was standing right there. She didn't know what he was laughing at, but she was sure that it had something to do with what she had just said. She shivered as he started to calm down, and he looked at her again. He smiled and got down on his knee. She was scared, but held her ground. He just shook his head.
"You know you have responsabilities to the school, Ms. Matsume. You need to fulfill them, even after school is over. Kira, you need to do these things for the school, because it's YOUR school, YOU have responsabilities and you need to take care of them. So," he stated as he stood up, " Go do them." And with that, he walked off. Kira stood there speechless. The only thing going through her mind was, what had just happened? Whatever, she thought, let's just get it done and get it over with. So she went and did her community service, put the trash in the dumpster, getting her favorite uniform dirty, and booked it home, where she knew her furious father would be waiting for an explination.
Chapter 2 - Summer Home-ward Bound
** Spoiler Alert!!! click to hide or show** Kira raced home as fast as her tired and aching legs could carry her. She knew the amount of trouble she would be in if she was late, and she was in even more trouble because of the after school cleaning she had to do. With that thought in mind, she ran faster and eventually arrived at her house. She noticed that her father's car was in the drivway. He's home from work early, she thought. She walked up to the door and was about to open it, when suddenly the door flew open and a man about 7 feet tall stood in the doorway. He had a buisiness suit on and his hair was all greasy from the work he had done today. She stood there, looked up at the man, then looked down and to the side. He stared at her, then crossed his arms.
"Kira, why are you home late today?" he asked firmly. Kira closed her eyes and sighed.
"I'm sorry, Father. The principal made me stay late and clean the school yard," she truthfully replied. She looked up at her father to see if he would shake his head in disbelief, which is what he always did, but this time he didn't shake his head, he did the opposite. He smiled, which was very strange for him. He then walked around her and put his arm around her. Kira looked up and smiled at him
"Why did he make you stay?" he asked her. She looked away with anger.
"Because he's mean and creepy and just plain WEIRD!!!" she said. Kira's dad smiled.
"This is why I didn't want you going to that school, Kira, but there's nothing I can do now, is there?" He chuckled, and Kira lightened up a little. Maybe I'm not going to be punished, she thought to herself. She smiled and walked inside with him.
Kira walked inside to the table with her father. He had all of Kira's clothes and the things she had packed the night before. She was so happy. She ran and got it and quickly put it in the car. She smiled at her dad, who just smiled right back. He then walked out to the car and put her CD player in the backseat. He also put a few of the CDs she had bought with the player. She was about to leave, but then remembered something.
"Wait a second, Dad," she said and ran back inside. She ran upstairs and quickly jogged to her room. she opened the dor to find her cat, Chichi, sitting on the floor. She sighed and told him to leave. He did. She then walked to the bed and reached under the pillow. What she pulled out was a picture, but it was a special one. It was one of her and her mother and father and brother having a picnic a Yamamoto Garden in Osaka. She smiled everytime she looked at it, and thought, since she was going back to Osaka, she would bring it with her. She then walked over to the window, waved down to her father, who by now was honking the horn, and ran downstairs and outside to the car. She got in front with her dad, who then drove off to the airport.
The airport was filled to the brim with people and Kira was just one of the many. She and her father walked through the mass of people and to the ticket counter, where they got the ticket for Kira. They walked all the way to her terminal and stopped. Her dad turned to her, where he saw she was nervous. He knelt down next to her.
"What's wrong, Kira?" he asked. She looked down at her baggage.
"I'm scared, Dad," she said. Her father smiled.
"You'll be fine, Kira," he said, putting a reasuring hand on her shoulder, "Just do as your told and you will get there in one piece, okay?" Kira looked up and smiled a little. She nodded, but then looked around at all of the people.
"But, Dad, What about all of these people? They really don't look that friendly." He chuckled.
"Don't worry about them, Kira, worry about you." He pointed at the gate, "You see that?" Kira looked at where he was pointing, which was at a big flight board above the terminal. She nodded.
"Yeah, I see it."
"That's what you need to watch," he explained, "That's where you see when your flight's leaving. Don't forget to lookup there every now and then. Your flight doesn't leave for another 2 hours, so you can go to the gift shop or something, but remember to look up at that flight board, okay?" Kira smiled and nodded again. She turned to face him.
"Thanks, Dad. I don't think I could do this by myself," she said. He smiled and stood up.
"Like I said, Kira, you'll be fine," he said and started to walk away.
He was about to walk away when Kira ran up and hugged him from behind.
"Dad, I love you," she said. Her father smiled, turned around, knelt down and hugged her back.
"I love you too, Kira," he said. Kira looked up at him.
"I have an odd question for you, Dad." He looked at her.
"What is it?" he asked.
"What's your first name?" Her father smiled.
"Gosai, my first name is Gosai." Kira looked at him.
"Gosai?" she asked. He nodded.
"But everyone calls me Red," he added. Kira shrugged and walk towards the terminal. Gosai walked up behind her.
"Do you know the plan, Kira?" he asked. Kira shook her head. Gosai sighed.
"Okay, when you get there, go straight to the train station and go to your grandmother's house and get your little brother. then go to your mother's house, got it?" Kira nodded. She had heard the plan over 50 times, but she still was afraid of forgetting it if she got scared. Gosai smiled. He gave her a look that said "Don't worry too much." That made her smile with confidence. They hugged again and went their separate ways.
One hour later, after going to the gift shop and the food places, Kira was making her way to the waiting part of the terminal, when she saw something that made her stomach wretch. What she saw was so horrible, she never thought it possible. Standing there, looking around the airport, suit and all, was her prinipal. She was so shocked that she couldn't move. It was then that the principal spotted her. He smiled and started to walk up to her. She didn't know what to do. She couldn't escape to the plane because it wasn't there yet, and wouldn't be for another hour. She had to buy time, so she ran into a mass of people. The principal ran after her. She turned around to see he was following her, so she ran faster. She turned a sharp right and ran all the way to the terminal. She was panting when she got there, and she was out of breath, but she looked up at the person running the counter and pointed behind her.
"You've got to help me!" she said hurriedly, " There's a mad man chasing me!" The attendent just looked at her.
"What are you talking about?" she said, "There are no mad men in this airport." Kira smacked her head. She looked behind her to see the principal hadn't followed her. She then turned back to the woman at the counter.
"Never mind," she said. She walked back to her seat and ate the rest of the sandwich she had in her pack.
Another hour later, the plane arrived and she got on, all the while looking around for her stalker principal. When she got on, she quickly found her seat and sat down. She had just taken out her CD player and started to listen to it, when her cell phone started to ring. She took it out and saw it was from her grandmother's house. It must be him, she thought, and answered it quickly.
"Konichiwa?" she asked.
"Konichiwa onee~chan!" came a little boy's voice from the other end of the phone. She had been right, it was her little brother in Japan.
"Konichiwa, Kyo~kun! O-genki desu ka?" she answered.
"I'm good, how are you, onee~chan?" he responded.
"Oh, you can speak english, now?" she asked.
"Just a little. It's hard to learn, onee~chan," he said. Kira laughed a little.
"Don't worry, I'll teach you some when I get home, okay?" she said.
"Hai, onee~chan. Where are you right now?"
"I'm on the plane back home, Kyo~kun. You're at Obaa~san's right?"
"Hai, onee~chan. I wish I could fly on a plane..." his voice trailed off. Kira snapped her fingers into the phone.
"Kyo~kun! Snap out of it!" she said angrily. Kyo came back on the phone.
"Gomen-nasai, onee~chan. I kind got carried away," he said. Kira rolled her eyes.
"I don't think 'carried away' covers it," she said, then laughed, "Just kidding, Dai~kun."
"Well, I have to go eat now, onee~chan, I'll see you when I get home, okay? Ja ne!"
"Sayonara, Kyo~dai~kun!" she said and hung up.
Just as she hung up, a little boy wearing a backpack with a fire design and a shirt with flames on the front of it got on the plane and walked over to her seat. She looked up and smiled. He just stood there, looking scared.
"Can I help you?" Kira offered. The little boy looked at her and handed her his ticket.
"C..can you help me...find my seat?" he asked, with a little nervousness in his voice. Kira smiled and took his ticket.
"Sure thing!" she answered. She looked at the ticket and at the seat number. She smiled and handed it back to him.
"So," he said, "Where am I sitting?" Kira patted his head and then patted the seat next to her.
"Right here. You're sitting right next to me." The little boy smiled.
"Really?" he asked. Kira smiled and nodded. He sat down next to her and smiled.
"That's a cute shirt," she said. He smiled.
"My big brother gave it to me. He is in Osaka right now." Kira smiled.
"Is that where you're going?" she asked. He nodded.
"Yeah, I'm going to meet him, then we are going to live there for a while. I was a little nervous, but now that I met you, I'm not so scared," he said. Kira smiled again.
"I'm glad," she said. She looked out the window and cringed as she saw her principal walk out onto the runway, looking for her, no doubt. She looked back at the little boy and saw he had brought out a little game and was playing it intent on defeating it. She laughed to herself a little and looked out the window again. A few second later, she felt a poke on her shoulder. She turned to see the little boy had his game on pause and was looking up at her. She smiled.
"What is it?" she asked. The little boy looked down.
"Uhm....wh..what's your name?" he asked. Kira smiled.
"My name is Kira. Kira Matsume," she answered. The boy looked at her strangely.
"Kira? That's a funny name." Kira frowned.
"What's so funny about it?" she asked. Then she thought of something.
"Well, What's YOUR name, huh?" she asked. The boy looked up at her and smiled.
"Austin. Austin Smith," he said. Kira smirked.
"Well, I don't like that name, so I'm gonna change it!" she stated. Austin looked at her.
"Wha...what are you going to change it to?" he asked, scared. Kira smiled and laughed.
"I was thinking of Kaji. It means 'Fire' in Japanese," she said. He smiled.
"Okay then. I like that name better anyway. Kaji Smith," He said. Kira laughed.
"No, not Kaji Smith. Just Kaji." Austin looked at her.
"Oh," he said, "Just Kaji. I like that too." Kira smiled.
"And you can just call me Kira, okay?" she said. Kaji smiled.
"Sure! No problem!" he said excitedly. The rest of the way, Kira taught Kaji all kinds of phrases in Japanese and they had fun.
Chapter 3 - In Japan
** Spoiler Alert!!! click to hide or show** The giant metal plane was hovering gently over the clouds as it entered the borders of Osaka, Japan. On this plane, Kira Matsume was teaching Kaji (Austin Smith) some Japanese phrases that might be useful when they land, which was to be very soon. Kira was in the middle of teaching Kaji how to ask for aomething, when all of a sudden the plane jerked forward. Kira was thrown from her seat, but Kaji held on tight. He looked around at the calm passengers on the plane. He then leaned over to Kira.
"Kira, what was that? he asked. Kira got back in her seat and looked at him.
"We are going to land soon, Kaji. I suggest we buckle in," she answered. He nodded and buckled himself into the seat. Kira did the same. They waited until they could see the ground from the window. What they saw was a packed and busy runway. Kira knew this was normal for the airport, but Kaji had never seen such a busy airport in his life! They looked at the people in the runway, getting on planes, getting off planes, entering the building, getting sodas, etc, etc. Kaji was amazed and scared because he had never been around so many people. Kira saw this and put a reasuring hand on his shoulder. He looked up quick and smiled. Kira smiled back and they both turned their attention to the runway.
That's when Kaji noticed that someone on the runway looked familiar. When he saw who it was, he gasped in excitement.
"What is it, Kaji?" she asked, looking at him. The little boy turned to her with a huge grin on his face.
"Oh, nothing, it's just that my big brother is down on the runway waiting for me!" he answered excitedly. Kira looked at him, then looked out the window. Sure enough, standing on the runway, about the same height as her and looking a little like Kaji, was a boy with short brown hair carrying a bag on his back. Kira saw him and blushed a little. He's cute, she thought. Kaji leaned over to get a better look, when he saw something else.
"Hey, Kira, isn't that your family over there?" he said pointing to a little boy with his grandmother on the runway. Kira pulled herself back into reallity and looked. Kaji was right, there was a little boy and his grandmother who looked a little like her standing there, too, but not next to Kaji's brother.
"What are they doing here?" she asked herself. Kaji looked at her.
"What's wrong, Kira?" he asked, "Aren't you glad to see them?" Kira turned to him and smiled.
"Of course I'm glad to see them," she answered, "I was just wondering why they came here, instead of waiting at their house like they usually do. That's why I said that." Kaji nodded and turned his attention back to the window.
They were very close to the ground now, so Kira got up and got their luggage from over their heads. Kaji just kept his attention on the ground of the runway. The pilot came over the speaker and told everyone to remain seateed for the last part of their trip. Kira quickly sat down and told Kaji to stay in his seat. He got back into his seat just as the wheels under the plane hit the pavement. They were jumped around a little, but other than that, they landed smoothly. The plane stopped and all of the passengers got off. Kira and Kaji followed.
Kaji and Kira got off the plane and immediatly Kaji ran towards his older brother. Kira wasn't going to stop him and began to walk over to her family, when she felt a pull on her shirt. She turned to see Kaji standing there with.....his brother. Kira was shocked, but kept her cool and just stood there.
"Hey, didn't I just see you a minute ago?" she said playfully to Kaji. He giggled a little.
"Kira, I want you to meet someone," he said and his older brother stepped forward. Kira blushed a little.
"Hey, thanks for watching him on the plane," the boy said. Kira blushed a little more.
"S..sure, no problem," she said, "It was the least I could do, seeing as he sat right next to me on the plane."
"Oh really, he was sitting right next to you?" he asked, "Well, I guess that helps." Kira blushed.
"Yeah," she said absentmindly. Kaji's brother looked at her and smiled.
"I haven't introduced myself," he said. Kira smiled.
"No, no, it's ok," she said. He smiled and held out his hand. Kira just looked at it. He laughed.
"What, you've never shaken someone's hand before?" Kira snapped out of her trance and shook his hand.
"Sorry, I'm just a little shaken up from the flight, that's all," she said smiling, "I'm Kira Matsume, by the way." He smiled.
"I'm Kyle Smith, Austin's older brother. Nice to meet you, Kira," he said. Kira blushed.
"Nice to meet you, too, Kyle," she said. Kyle looked at her family. He smiled.
"I think you should go see your family, Kira." She looked at him.
"Huh?" she said. Kyle smiled.
"Come on," he said and took her hand. She could have fainted, but didn't and just blushed some more.
Kyle and Kaji half dragged, half walked Kira to her little brother and grandmother. All the while Kira was blushing and telling them that she could walk on her own. Every time she said she could walk by herself, Kyle looked back and smiled. She immediately stopped talking and kept walking. They reached Kira's little brother and she stood up. Her little brother ran to her and hugged her. She smiled and hugged him back.
"Konichiwa, Kira~onee~chan!" he said. She smiled.
"Muchi muchi, Kyo~kun!" she said back and kissed his cheek. Kyo quickly rubbed his cheek. Kira laughed. Kyo smiled and looked at Kaji and Kyle.
"Who are they, onee~chan?" he asked. Kira turned and smiled. She turned back to Kyo.
"These are just some friends I met on the plane and the runway," she said. Kyle and Kaji stepped forward.
"I'm Kyle," Kyle said.
"and I'm Austin," Kaji said, "But Kira gave me a different name. A Japanese one. She calls me Kaji," he added quickly. Kyo smiled.
"I'm Kyo Matsume," he said, "Kira's little brother." Kyle smiled and turned to Kira.
"Nice to meet your family, Kira." Kira blushed.
"Thanks, Kyle," she said. She looked at him. He smiled.
"You know, they gave me a Japanese name, too," he said. Kira looked at him.
"They did? They who?" she asked.
"A lot of the people here. They all call me one weird word, and I have no idea what it means," he said. Kira shrugged.
"Well, what's the word? I'll tell you what it means," she said. Kyle smiled at her.
"It's Yuki. All the people I meet here call me Yuki and I have no idea what it means," he said. Kira smiled.
"Well, 'Yuki' means snow in Japanese," she said, then she added, "I kind of like it." Kyle smiled at her.
"You do?" he asked. Kira blushed and smiled.
"Yeah, I do," she said. Kyo saw her blushing.
"Why are you blushing, Kira?" he whispered to her. Kira blushed more and looked at him. She frowned.
"I...I don't know what your talking about!" she told him and turned away from him. Kyo and Kaji laughed. Kyle just smiled.
"Sisters, what are you going to do with them," Kyo said. Kaji smiled and shrugged. They laughed. Kira hit Kyo over the head.
"Knock it off, Kyo~kun," she said with anger in her eyes. Kyo saw this and stopped laughing. He nodded.
"Aww, come on, Kira. He was just kidding," Kyle said. Kira looked at him, then at Kyo and hugged him.
"Oh, I'm sorry , Kyo~kun," she said. Kyo looked at her and smiled.
"It's ok, I forgive you, onee~chan," he said and hugged her back. Kira smiled.
Kira and Kyo backed away from each other and Kyle approached them.
"Hey, Kira and Kyo, if it's not too much trouble, could Austin and I come and have dinner with you guys? Our parents aren't going to be home tonight and we can't cook." Kira and Kyo looked at each other. They smiled.
"Sure you can!" Kyo said.
"Sweet!" Kaji exclaimed.
"But we have to ask our grandmother first," Kira said. Kyle smiled.
"Sure, whatever you have to do first," he said. Kira blushed and smiled.
"Wait right here for a sec," she said. She walked over to her grandmother.
"Konbanwa, Obaa~san," she said and hugged her grandmother.
"Konbanwa, Kira~san," she said. Kira smiled. She then asked if Kyle and Kaji could come over for dinner later. Her grandmother nodded. Kira gave her a kiss.
"Arigato gozaimasu, Obaa~san!" she said and walked back.
"So, what did she say?" Kyle asked. Kira smiled and nodded. Kyle took the hint. He smiled.
"Come by our house around 5:30 or 6:00, okay?" Kira said. Kyle and Kaji nodded.
"You got it," Kyle said. Kira smiled.
"I think I will just call you Yuki. It's easier," she said. Yuki looked at her.
"Really?" he asked. Kira smiled and nodded. Yuki shrugged. Kira smiled and laughed.
"Well, come on, Yuki. I'll show you where our house is so you don't get lost, okay?" she said. Yuki smiled.
"Sure, why not?" he said. Kira blushed and walked over to her grandmother.
"Kyo~kun! Come on! We're going home!" she yelled to her little brother, but as far as she knew, she was home.
Chapter 4 - A Wonderful World of Mayhem
** Spoiler Alert!!! click to hide or show** Kira's crew reached her grandmother's house and walked inside. Kyo and Kaji plopped down on the couch in the livingroom while Kira and Yuki went with her grandmother into the kitchen. The yellow-tiled walls were covered in pictures of Kira and Kyo when they were little and pictures of them with their parents. Yuki smiled when he saw one of the pictures. It had a 7-year-old Kira in her bathingsuit in the wading pool and her little brother in his little swim trunks. They were splashing around, having fun. Kira walked up behind him.
"I really miss those days," she said, startling Yuki. She laughed a little and Yuki blushed. He smiled.
"What happened to your parents, Kira?" he asked. Kira looked at him.
"My Dad is living over in the US in California, but my Mom..." she didn't finish, but looked away at one of the pictures. Yuki took the hint.
"I see," he said, "I'm sorry for your loss." Kira looked at him and smiled.
"It's ok," she replied, "it wasn't like you were there and caused her to die. No, she died in a tragic car accident. I saw her when she was in the hospital. She was all torn up." Yuki lowered his head and looked away.
"It must have been pretty bad, then," he said. Kira looked at him.
"Yeah, it was," she said, turning to him, "I still feel like I did everytime I see someone rushed off to the hospital because I think it's someone I know, but it never is." Yuki looked at her. He smiled.
"Well, let's hope it never is at all," he said. Kira smiled.
"Yeah," she said. Just then Kaji and Kyo came in frantically yelling about something. They started to pull Kira toward the door, but Kira pulled away from them.
"What are you two doing?!" she exclaimed. Kyo and Kaji looked at each other and then at Kira.
"Something just fell into the back yard!" Kyo said. Kira looked at him.
"What? What are you talking about?" she asked. Kaji pulled on her arm.
"Come on! We'll show you!" he said. Yuki walked up to his brother.
"Aust...Kaji don't do that. It's rude!" he said to him. Kaji didn't care. He kept pulling on Kira. Kira looked at Yuki, and Yuki looked at her. He shrugged, so Kira let herself be pulled out into the backyard.
Kira was pulled into the backyard by Kaji and Kyo, who thought they saw something fall from the sky. Kira thought that they were crazy, but the boys kept pulling on her and she was pulled over to the woods. That's when the boys stopped pulling her and pushed her toward the woods. Kira stood up and turned to face the boys with her hands on her hips.
"What the hell are you doing?" she said. Kyo looked at her.
"Something fell in there. Go check it out!" he said. Kira glared at him.
"Who are you to boss me around?" she said, "I'M the big sister here! YOU should be going in there, if you weren't such a chicken." She sighed. Yuki walked up next to her.
"I'll go in with you, Kira," he said. Kira looked at him and smirked at Kyo.
"Thank you, Yuki. You're so brave," she taunted. Kyo glared at her. Kira laughed.
"That's not funny, onee~chan. There really is something in there. Maybe I AM a chicken, but I really don't want to...." he didn't say anymore for what he saw said it all.
"Want to what, Kyo~kun?" she asked. He still didn't say anything. He was looking right behind Kira to see a dark shadow was appearing from behind her. She didn't notice, but Kaji and Yuki did.
"Uhm...Kira?" Yuki tried to tell her. Kira looked at him, then turned around, but it was too late. The shadow appeared behind her, knocked her out, picked her up, and ran into the the woods.
"Kira, no!!" Yuki called after her.
"KIRA!!!" Kyo and Kaji yelled. It was no use. She was gone.
Kyo and Kaji began to cry. Yuki just looked at where she just was. He stared at the spot for a second longer, then glared. He looked up at the woods.
"I'm going to get her," he said defiantly. Kyo looked up at him.
"You can't!" he said, "It will get you too!" Yuki looked at him and smiled.
"Don't you worry, I won't get caught and I'll get your sister back before dinnertime," he said and took off running into the woods.
Kira didn't know what had happened. One minute she was talking to her scared little brother who was scared to check out the woods, and the next mintue she was in a clearing in the woods, staring up at the stary sky. She sat up straight, which she shouldn't have, because now she had a huge headache. She held her head and tried to get up.
"What happened?" she said as she looked at her surroundings. She got up and walked over to one of the trees. She looked up and saw that it really was night.
"How long have I been here?" she asked herself. Of course, she had no answer, but someone else did.
"You have been here for a while, Kira Matsume," a voice said behind her. She slowly turned to find...a figure dressed in a black robe. The person wasn't wearing shoes and there was blood dripping from his mouth. She quickly felt her neck and found...no bite marks. She sighed relief. She looked back at the person to see he had taken off his hood. That's when she realized who it was. She was so shocked she couldn't move.
The man walked over to her and smiled. Oh yeah, she knew that smiled anywhere. It was the principal, or rather, the stalker, she should call him. He walked up to her.
"Hello, Kira. Did you miss me?" he said, then he laughed. When he realized that she wasn't saying anything, he continued.
"You can't hide from me, Kira. I know where you go, where you live, what you do, everything about you. I even know what REALLY happened to your poor defensless, well, not as defensless as I thought, Mother." This made Kira come back to life.
"My...mother?" she managed to squeeze out. She was too shocked to speak. He smiled.
"yes, your mother wasn't in any car accident. She was murdered, by no other than her own husband, Gosai." This made Kira's eye twitch.
"So, you..you're saying...my FATHER, murdered my MOTHER?" she said, the words mother and father she exaggerated. He principal smiled evilly and nodded slowly.
"You got it," he said, "Pretty low for him, don't you think?" Kira just stared at him.
"Who are you?" she said. He laughed.
"Me? Why, I'm..." He began to change shape. Kira stood in awe as he started to grow bigger and change shape. He laughed all the while.Kira realized she was too close to him, so she tried to climb the tree, but fail, so she ran to the edge of the clearing. She just stared at him as he changed. He stopped changing and in front of her stood an inhuman creature who stood about 8 feet tall and smelled like what he ate. He smirked at Kira.
"I'm Hanabe Yamato. I'm the demon king from hell," he stated. Kira always knew something was different about him, butnever imagined he would be a demon in disguise. He picked a bird out of the sky and popped it in his mouth. Kira gagged. That explained the blood running down his mouth. He was a messy eater. Kira was now faced with a demon that ate living things, and no way to defend herself. She screamed.
"Jesus Christ! What the hell is that?!" Yuki said as he saw the demon rise above the trees. He heard a scream from somewhere near by. He knew who it was.
"Kira!" he yelled as he started to run faster, "Kira! Kira, can you hear me?!"
Chapter 5 - The Way It Was Meant To Be
** Spoiler Alert!!! click to hide or show** "Kira! Kira, can you hear me?!" she heard from out of the woods. Kira didn't know who it was, but she hoped it was her savior. The demon looked around and saw where the voice was coming from. He laughed.
"Looks like your boyfriend wants to join the fight, also," he said.
"Huh?" Kira was confused, but she saw something russling in the bushes and got her answer to who he was talking about.
"Yuki!" she exclaimed as he ran out of the bushes. He stopped and looked at her.
"Kira!" he said happily, and smiled. He started to run over to her, but the demon stepped in front of him.
"Where do you think YOU'RE going?" it said. Yuki stopped in his tracks. Kira ran for Yuki.
"Leave him out of this!" she yelled as she tried to jump on the demon. The demon turned and laughed. He smacked her away like a bug. She flew and hit the tree. Yuki ran after her.
"Kira!" he yelled. Kira's left eye was filled with blood, so she couldn't see through it. She looked at Yuki with her good eye.
"Yu..ki..." she managed to get out. She reached for him as he ran to her. Yuki ran up to her.
"Kira, are you alright?" he asked. Kira looked at him and smiled weakly.
"What...do you think?" she said sacrastically. Yuki smiled a little.
"What is that thing?" he asked. Kira looked at the demon, Hanabe.
"He calls himself Hanabe, the demon king of hell. He was just a principal at my school, but now I'm having second thoughts about him," she suddenly coughed up some blood, but she was alright.
"Kira, we need to get out of here, fast!"
"I know, but I don't know how..." She stopped. Yuki looked at her.
Yuki looked in the direction she was looking and saw it too. A little light flashed in front of the big demon, making him step backward. The little light danced around Hanabe a little more, then went away.
"Kira, do that again." She looked at him.
"Do what again?" He looked at her.
"Whatever you just did!"
"I didn't do that!"
"Yes, you did, Kira," said a voice right next to them. They lookd up to see...the little light. Whoa. They didn't see that coming. They looked closer to see it wasn't a little light at all. It was a fairy! or it looked like one at least. They didn't move for a minute. Kira broke the ice.
"Who....What are you?" she asked. The little fairy giggled.
"You don't know me? Kira, I thought you knew! You were the one who summoned me, after all," she said, giggling again. Kira looked at it again. Yuki looked again too, but turned his attention back to Hanabe, who was coming again.
"Uh...Kira, could you hurry this up a bit?" Kira looked at Hanabe again, then looked back at the fairy. She shook her head.
"I don't get it. Who are you?" she asked. The little fairy her own head.
"Oh geez... Ok, My name is Tenkuu. I am a sprite of the air. Does that clear it up?" she said. Kira wanted to shake her head, but thought it not a good idea, so she nodded. Tenkuu smiled. Yuki kept his eye on Hanabe.
Kira looked at the little sprite hanging in the air.
"How did I summon you?" Kira asked. Tenkuu smiled again.
"We will always come to your aid. Just call out our names when you need us and say a certain chant for the things you want us to do."
"Like what?" Kira asked.
"Like, if you want us to attack, call out 'batsu' after our name."
"So, if i wanted you to attack right now, I would have to say your name and call out that word?" Tenkuu smiled.
"You go it, Kira." she said. Kira smiled. It was her turn now. She got up.
"Yuki, move out of the way. Tenkuu, how many other sprites like you are there?" Yuki moved.
"7 including me. Why? You don't think we can do this together?" Tenkuu said sadly.
"Not by ourselves. What's their names?"
"One's name that I think will help is Mokushi. She is a super sight sprite. She can see things no one can." Kira smiled.
"Alright, then," Kira said. She stood up tall and shouted "Mokushi!" Instantly another light came flying past her head and hovered right in front of her. the little sprite looked at Tenkuu.
"Hey, Tenkuu. What's up?" she said, then looked up at Hanabe.
"He is," Tenkuu giggled. Mokushi looked at Kira.
"You were the one who summoned me, huh?" she said, looking Kira up and down, "Not bad for your second time." She smiled.
"Alright," Kira said, "Now, let's get down to business. I have one quick question. Do I call both names and say it?" The sprites nodded, getting ready to attack. Kira was ready.
"Tenkuu Mokushi Batsu!" she called out and the little sprites shot like bullets from where they were floating. Yuki saw this and was amazed. Kira smiled.
I never thought I could do that, she thought. Tenkuu and Mokushi were slahing and bashing around Hanabe, but weren't even putting up a fight. He batted them away like flies. Tenkuu looked at Mokushi.
"I don't think this is working. We need him." Mokushi nodded.
"I agree," she said and flew down to Kira.
"What's wrong?" Kira asked.
"You need to summon someone more powerful than we are. Call out this name. Kasai," she said and flew back to fight with Tenkuu. Kira thought about it, then decided It would be better. So she called out "Kasai!" and another little flash of light flew in front of her. This time, though, It was a boy.
"You can summon us? Wow, nice job, kid, what's your name?"
"Kira. Kira Matsume," she said. Kasai smiled.
"Well, Kira, since I'm here what do you need help with?" Kira pointed and Kasai looked. He smiled.
"Sure, no problem. You know how to use the chants?"
"Sort of," Kira answered. Kasai rolled his eyes.
"Well, you know how to get us to attack, right?" Kira nodded, so he continued, "Well, let me clue you in on something. Girls chants are different from the boys chants. Remember that. If you want me to attack, say 'raishuu', got it?" Kira nodded again.
"Ok, here I go," she said and Kasai got into position. Kira took a deep breath and said, "Kasai Raishuu!" Kasai took off like a bullet, a little stream of fire following him. Kira smiled.
"Kira!" Tenkuu flew down to her. Kira was startled, but got her cool back.
"What is it?" she asked.
"You need to get him and you out of here! We'll keep this guy busy." Kira nodded, grabbed the stunned Yuki by the arm, and dragged him away.
Chapter 6 - Kira and Yuki, Together Forever
** Spoiler Alert!!! click to hide or show** Kira pulled Yuki into the bushes as Tenkuu, Mokushi, and Kasai fought off the demon, Hanabe Yamato. Yuki was stunned before as he saw the sprites, but he got his head back together and started to run with Kira. They stopped to catch their breath, and Yuki took it upon him self to ask Kira something.
"What were those things?" he asked. Kira looked at him and smiled.
"I'm not sure myself, but they saved our lives, right? So they're not all bad." Yuki nodded. THey caught their breath and walked for a while. They looked at their surroundings and figured they were lost. Yuki spoke first.
"So, Kira. Did you know that...thing?" he asked her. She hung her head.
"Unfortunately, yes," she said, "He used to be just a grammer school principal, but now I know who he really is, a demon who feeds off living things." Yuki looked at her. He put a hand on her shoulder. She turned to him and and blushed, but smiled just the same.
"Kira," Yuki said, looking away from her, "There's....something I wanna tell you, but I...don't know how to put it." Kira looked at him.
"Yuki?" she said in shock. She didn't know what he was talking about. He then looked at her and they stopped walking. he put his other hand on her other shoulder and held her at arms length.
"Kira," he started, "When I first met you, I thought you were, well, kinda cute." At this, Kira blushed, but he continued, "And I thougth it was sweet of you to help my little brother and all. I thought that you were a normal girl, with a normal family and a normal life. I never knew that you were capable of this, so, when I saw it happen, I was in total shock, but now, I'm not as scared..." He looked her in the eye. Kira looked back at him, scared of what he was going to do. However, Yuki didn't do something harmful. Instead, he pulled Kira towards him and hugged her. Kira was shocked and blushed. She looked up at him.
"Y..Yu..Yuki...." she studdered. He put his finger to her lips.
"No more talking, Kira. You need rest." Kira nodded sleepily.
"Yeah, you're right," she said. No sooner had she said that, she fell asleep. Yuki smiled. He picked her up and carried her the rest of the way.
Kyo and Kaji were sitting outside the woods, staring at the spot Yuki had run off to. They were getting worried.
"Do you think they'll come back soon?" Kaji asked. Kyo shrugged.
"I have no idea," he said. Kaji looked at him.
"Why don't we go find them?" he suggested. Kyo looked at him.
"Are you mad?! We can't go in there! We'll get killed!" Kaji looked away.
"Yeah, you're right," he said, looking back at the woods. Kyo looked, too.
"All we can do now, is wait for them," Kyo said. Kaji nodded and the two watched the trees and bushes, watching, and waiting...
Kira woke up and looked around, finding herself still in the woods. She got up, only to feel a pain in her side and sit back down. She looked around to get a feel of her surroundings. She was in a hollow tree, just big enough for her and another person to get through. That's when she realized that Yuki wasn't with her. She called his name. Nothing. She crawled over to the hole in the tree, she saw it was day now, and also realized she was hungry. That's when she heard somethign in the bushes. She ducked into the hole, looking at the bush as it russled. She was ready to duck back into the tree, when she saw a familiar and friendly face pop out of the bush. It was Yuki, and he looked like he had breakfast all made. She smiled and got out of the tree. Yuki saw her and smiled.
"Good, you're awake," he said, putting the food down on a nearby stump. Kira walked over to him and smiled.
"Where did you get this food?" she asked. Yuki smiled.
"I found some in the woods. Wanna try some?" he asked. Kira looked at the food, reached down, and took some. She plopped it in her mouth. At first it had a bitter taste, but it got better the more she chewed. She swallowed it and turned to Yuki.
"It's pretty good. Thanks," she said. She walked back to the tree. Yuki looked at her and followed.
They walked to the tree and Kira got back inside. She looked at Yuki over her shoulder, who smiled, and walked back into the hole in the tree. Yuki followed close behind her. Kira sat where she had slept and Yuki sat next to her. He smiled at her then turned away, Kira looked at him.
"Yuki?" she asked. He looked at her.
"Yes, Kira?" Kira turned away from him for a minute, then turned back quickly.
"Why did you come after me?" she asked suddenly. Yuki was startled by this, but quickly regained his self-control.
"Why are you asking that?" he asked back. Kira looked away.
"I wanna know the reason." Yuki looked away from her and blushed.
"I...I was...Kyo and Austin (Kaji) made me. They were worried and I was the oldest and strongest so they dicided that I should go," he explained. Kira looked at him and frowned.
"You're not telling me the truth, are you?" she asked. yuki looked at her shocked. How could she know, he thought to himself. Kira stared at him angrily.
"I know when someone is lying to me. I'm not an idiot, Yuki," she blurted out. Yuki turned away and sighed.
"I was worried about you and came to find you, okay?" he said. Kira still frowned.
"Honest?" she asked. Yuki got up angrily.
"You know what?!" he yelled. Kira looked at him in fear. He looked at her and said, "I came to get you, but you don't seem to want to be helped!" Kira kept staring at him.
"Yuki...." she said, scared. Yuki sighed and walked over to her, but she backed away to the wall. He still walked over to her and bent down to her.
"I'm sorry, Kira. I...I was just angry that you couldn't see that...well...I don't know how to put it." Kira looked at him. He smiled and picked her up, standing her up on her feet.
"Yuki, what are..." she started, but didn't get farther than that before something happened. Yuki held her at arms length, then hugged her. Kira blushed really red. Yuki held her there for a few more seconds, brought her back to arms length, and then held her close to his chest. Kira could hear his heart beating fast. She felt her own. It was beating fast, too. She blushed again and looked up at him.
"Yuki..." Yuki looked at her. He had a calming effect on her, because when she looked into his eyes, she instantly felt like time stood still. He lowered his head and rested it on her shoulder. Kira looked at him an smiled. She closed her eyes. Yuki lifted his head a little, saw this, and smiled. He lifted his head off her shoulder completely. Kira looked at him and smiled. Yuki smiled back, lowering his head down to her lips. He spoke with softness in his voice.
"Kira, this is the real reason I came to get you," he said. Kira closed her eyes. Kira was shocked when Yuki did what he did next. He lowered his head and pressed his lips to hers. Kira was so shocked she couldn't move. After a few seconds, she relaxed and wrapped her arms around Yuki's neck. They held together like that for a while, then let go. Kira and Yuki both blushed beet red.
"Uhmm..." Kira started. Yuki looked the other way.
"I...I'm sorry, Kira," he studdered, "I...." Kira smiled and turned to him.
"I..It's okay, Yuki. I...I feel the same way," she said. Yuki looked at her.
"Y..You do?" he asked. Kira smiled.
"Yeah, I do," she answered. Yuki smiled back.
"Cool," he said. Kira turned away and walked toward the door. Yuki followed her.
Kira turned before leaving and looked at Yuki. Yuki stopped.
"What is it, Kira?" he asked. She shook her head and said nothing. She kept walking, but Yuki pulled her back.
"Kira, you have to promise me something," he said. Kira looked at him.
"What's that?" she asked.
"That you and I will be in this fight, together." Kira looked at him.
"A..are you sure, Yuki?" she asked. Yuki looked at her and smiled. Obviously, that was a yes, she thought.
"Alright then, I promise," she said. Yuki smiled again. Kira smiled back and left the tree, with Yuki close behind her.
