Megatokyo's art isn't great either, but it's still fine.

yup, people shouldn't judge anime by animation. but hell no, we are now in the 21th century, people will look for the quality and beautiness, that is why some animators remake their anime

If you don't think it's possible to make a great series with bad to okay art, look at Spectacular Spider-man, their art isn't that great but it is one of the greatest cartoon shows I've seen in a while.

That was only for like two episodes, there was also like three or four episodes for Action Bastard this season.

only if the story is good

that is where, my friend, i disagree. Especially if we're talking about ANIME here, i think good art is important. I agree that plot is important (like everyone does), but how the characters look and express themselves all depend on how well they're drawn and animated. when animes are produced on a low budget, it shows. the quality sucks, and nobody likes it.

well i kind of don't appreciate you implying that the art in crayon shin-chan isn't good. it's just simple. besides, you wouldn't want to watch a show about a four-year old doing the ass dance if the artwork looked like vampire knight, would you? i'll save you the trouble of answering and tell you that you wouldn't. it'd be like watching the cast of scooby-doo act out an episode of south park, and it just wouldn't be as funny.

as for people telling you that you won't be able to make a good anime because you're bad at drawing, they're jerks. but it's important to keep in mind that the artwork of a show like shin-chan is drawn that way on purpose to suit the crazy-awesome script it has. so if you wanted to make an anime/manga with not-so-good art, you'd have to have an excellent, seriously, EXCELLENT, and suitable script to go along with it.

agreed. whats most important to an anime is plot, characters, and creativity. A good anime does not have to have good art. altho having both good art and good plot will be extra nice.

Disagree.

The story is important, but the art is more important. People won't watch a romance anime with horrible art, or an action anime with cute characters. The art has to go along with the genre or no one is gonna look at it.

No.The art style is irrelevant. Unless of course, the people watching it are obsessed with writing, reading and drawing yaoi and yuri fiction.

No anime can match up to the unadulterated badass-ness of Akagi and Kaiji, even though the art is not very .... orthodox.

I agree with you mostly. If the the story is good enough, then the art style probably isn't going to hold back the popularity of a show. I mean, detective conan is super popular in japan but it's art style isn't exactly conventional, either. (Although that is just my opinion, but I think Conan's style is pretty childish)

Plus a lot of anime that have 'different' styles are based off of manga that are already relatively popular. The art style isn't irrelevant, but it definitely pales in comparison to storyline and animation quality in importance.

It's better to have a good plot than good art.

yea, I agree, people shouldnt judge an anime by the its art style : )

Yet it is not a reason for making anime with crap art.
Art style and storyline should compliment not to compete with each other.

Should they make an anime with good plot but terrible animation, okay make a novel.
Should they make an anime with good art but crappy storyline, then make a poster or a coloring book instead.

i'd love to see a stick figure anime. just can't imagine though how they would make their audience appreciate it.
