it depends on their relationship, like does one of them still love the other etc. etc. =O

Don't do it. I was told by one of my friends that he didn't care if I dated a chick he dated a few years before. Don't do it, trust me.

if your best friend says its ok then yes its ok but i would tread carefully...it might turn out that she/he was lying and theyre not actaully ok with the whole thing

If you really like the person...why ask permission from your best friend to date his/her ex? I mean he/she now has no right or hold on the person you want to date.

Depends really. I would ask my friend permission, but if her ex hurt her, no way.

Gotta agree, but if my man is cool with it and I felt strongly enough then why not? It all depends on the context, but usually I wouldn't try anything.

I wouldn't. You gotta think about why they broke up if it was cuz he cheated on her well then he's got no say in if I wanted to date her. But if they broke up because she kept nagging or something I'd steer clear. Also the length that they've been going out is a big factor if it was a couple years you might want to take a few steps back and re-examine the situation.

In my books, friends and enemies' exes are strictly off-limits.

This is right up there with "Can you date your friend's sister". And the answer is just as situationally dependent. My old roommate has been dating my sister for many years, and I'm totally cool with it. More recently, I had a different roommate start dating my ex. It all depends on the person.

I've only been on the asking side once. However, the three of us were so close that I knew the answer before I even had to ask my friend, and I'm very glad that I didn't go for it then. The world is huge, and there are many people in it, so I'd really have to want to pursue something in order to push beyond a friend's baggage. But talking to the friend is a good way to gauge appropriateness, but they may not be honest with their heart...
